PlayStation 4 Should Not Have a Subscription-based Model

Microsoft have recently expanded their subscription model for the Xbox 360 leading some to suggest a similar idea for the PS4, but that shouldn't happen, at least in the beginning.

I agree, and all the PS+ things should also be free too

IRetrouk4975d ago

U want the ps+ for free? Never gonna happen. To be fair its fairly priced.

slaton244975d ago

dude he said ps+ things not the ps+ being free itself read a little better next time

KwietStorm_BLM4975d ago

@Slaton24

If PS+ "things" were free, but you still paid for PS+, then what are you paying for? What are these "things?" You must be silly saying read a little better next time.

Army_of_Darkness4975d ago (Edited 4975d ago )

The things that make PS+ what it is, is the fact that they offer "free/rental games, discounts and stuff" so summons75 is technically asking sony to make PS+ free. Which obviously won't happen and I don't blame them cause the annual price is actually reasonable for all the stuff you get.

BattleAxe4975d ago

If Sony starts subscriptions for the PSN, then I'll stick strictly with Steam. I paid for a One year Gold membership on LIVE, and I've been regretting it ever since. Who knows, if Sony brings a subscription to the PS4, then I would actually consider a WiiU, which is something i said I'd never do.

Neko_Mega4975d ago

lol in dream world, PS+ is cheaper then getting Gold for XBL.

Blastoise4975d ago (Edited 4975d ago )

So you want full retail and downloadable games for free?
Why would Sony do that? Why would developers want that?

Lol like IRetrouk said never gonna happen.

I'd still recommend PS+ though :)

Edit @ Below
"I agree, and all the PS+ things should also be free too"
You said free. You want PS+ Items for free, so you want full retail and downloadables for free. Right?

And if you think PS+ is a terrible system that only offers demo's then where the heck have you been since E3 2012? Everyone is singing its praises, because its awesome

Summons754975d ago

Ummmmm you DON'T get anything for FREE. Once you subscription runs out you can't play the games....that is NOT free.

Do you also like paying to play a demo of a game, because that's exactly what you do with PS+ rent games and pay for demos

PS+ is such a terrible system and makes me laugh when fools fall for the "free" games thing

Ryo-Hazuki4975d ago (Edited 4975d ago )

@ Summons

Just like your renting access to play online on the 360 for a game that you already paid for. As soon as you stop subscribing your online access is denied. Only thing is that subscription is a scam because STEAM and PSN provide that for free. I'll take a games subscription over anything I've seen so far.

As for the article, Sony should not follow MS footsteps. I believe that tactic shouldn't be in the gaming market because if you can't afford to purchase a console upfront then gaming shouldn't be your hobby. Gaming isn't an necessity in life.

Army_of_Darkness4975d ago (Edited 4975d ago )

Gezz, it's getting really annoying hearing the same dumb shit every time, like as if they think we PS+ subscribers don't know how PS+ works?!?
and yes genius, we clearly subscribed to PS+ solely because we want early DEMOS and free game rentals!!!...

Let me try to make it as basic for you as possible.
Netflix-> $8.99 per month=> 107.88 per year, for unlimited movie watching pleasure. until you cancel your subscription and WA-la! no more free rentals for you.

PS+-> $4.16 per month=> 49.96 per year, for early access to demos, beta's, themes, avatars, dlc and free game rentals that don't expire until your annual subscription ends...
Are you still with me here?? okay, now I'm sure you rented a game from blockbuster one time in your life and how much was that for 1 week? about $10-$15?! LOL! yet you think $4.16 per month is a rip off for games you constantly get to keep for months on end till you run out of harddrive space, therefore you have to delete the games that you completed in order to download a bunch more free games?!?! yeah, total rip off..(-_-)
I personally consider them free games that I can complete whenever I want and don't have to deal with the hassle of selling it afterwards to get a little money out of it. No need to worry about getting something back cause I pretty much got a FULLY completed game for less than $4

CraigandDayDay4975d ago (Edited 4975d ago )

The option to do so I guess would be ok. But please please Sony allow us to purchase it outright as well. I have no interest in paying for it like we do our cell phones (subsidized prices).

@hk gamer
Yeah like maybe get access to PS+ with the subscription price for those two years.

hkgamer4975d ago

yeah, definitely having an option would be great. i would also like other free stuff with the subscription model.

gaffyh4975d ago

Btw, this is nothing to do with PS+

Godmars2904975d ago

Like PS+ there should be subscription options.

Simco8764975d ago

Keep plus and keep gaming online free.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8542d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele41d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk41d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay41d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10142d ago (Edited 42d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit41d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg41d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10141d ago (Edited 41d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14941d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle54d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit54d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog55d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog55d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad55d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_55d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage55d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda54d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
