Experience Points: Graphics Are Overrated

From eGamer, "As of late, I have been struck by a recurring trend in the gaming world of criticising a game over its visual style (or aesthetics if you want to be technical). Most people equate visual aesthetics with the term ‘graphics’ and don’t understand that they are two very different concepts. Blame for this misunderstanding falls partly to gaming journalists and critics alike who have used the term as an encompassing word for all the visual wonderment a game spits out at you. Regardless, a differentiation needs to be made".

Yes, they are.

Sadly, they are also underrated.

It's mostly because gamers and the media insist on using the term "graphics" to describe the ENTIRE visual experience of a game, which is moronic. Fidelity, animation, and art style should all merit discussion.

Wigriff4976d ago

How anyone disagreed with this assertion is beyond me...

wastedcells4976d ago

Great graphics are very important... Depending on the game of course but they are not everything. When a great game comes out and the amazing graphics help tell the story or pull you in then it's a huge win. Games like bioshock for example had an amazing atmosphere that made it so special.

BitbyDeath4976d ago

Animation is underated as it contributes to both graphics and gameplay.

Games like Uncharted and inFamous are at the top of their fields in this area... IMO

Jreca4976d ago (Edited 4976d ago )

Graphics are, Art style and polish aren't.

TheFirstClassic4976d ago

That's why banjo kazooie on the n64 will always look better than battlefield 3 maxed out on a pc.

DarthJay4976d ago

Please tell me that was sarcasm.

TheFirstClassic4976d ago

It isn't. The textures are better of course, but I just perfer the art style of banjo kazooie. Banjo kazooie is more pleasing to the eye to me because of the art, not because of the textures.

BitbyDeath4976d ago (Edited 4976d ago )

I agree with your sentiment not sure about those two games though.

Take the latest Rayman (Wii U) for example looks to have excellent graphics.

Also let's not also forget Ratchet and Clank being the closest to reach Pixar like quality.

Wigriff4976d ago

I agree. When people say they don't want to play a game like Limbo, Braid, or Pixeljunk (anything) because the "graphics suck," I want to kick them in the teeth.

hkgamer4976d ago

Article title should be "realistic graphics are over-rated". The argument in general was about how games should not need to mimic a realistic art approach.
However there are also many top games that stay away from taking the realistic approach because they knnow that the graphics would be compared to real life and that it would never match up.
the new bioshock, MGS, uncharted and infamous (and a whole lot more, jsut can't think at the moment) all go for a softer approach and visually looks amazing.
actually lets compare infamous to prototype. Prototype goes for a realisticapproach and infamous goes for a cartoon/comic book approach. IMO I think infamous looks a whloe lot better.
Borderlands is another example, originallly it was meant to have a more realistic approach, I haven't seen any screenshots or videos so I can't comment on how it would have looked but the developers scrapped that idea and went for a cel-shaded look.
Anyway what I am trying to say is that no all games go for a realistic look, actually mainly FPS goes for that realistic look.

Tetsujin4976d ago

Most of the games I've put in my top lists have junk graphics however fun as hell to play.

CrimsonessCross4976d ago

Graphics do not equal or are not greater than all other aspects of a game.

I honestly don't care how a game looks as long as it plays well and is something I (would/can) enjoy. Graphics are lovely, but I am always going back to older games that don't match up to graphics of today's standards because of how it plays.

Wigriff4976d ago

One of the best games of all time is a testament to this: Super Metroid. That game holds up strongly still, and is a nearly flawless experience, despite lacking modern day graphical bells and whistles.

CrimsonessCross4976d ago

I never played any other metroid outside of the original nintendo game haha.

I guess I never was too much of a fan but glad to hear it's still holding strong! :D

CrimsonessCross4976d ago (Edited 4976d ago )

To add to my original comment, I can't forget about the amazing things Phys-X can do and all the other game engines.

Atmosphere creates the game just as much and most but not all the time a game is improved with higher graphics. There are times when it doesn't even matter because you are involved with everything else happening.

I am happy how far graphics have come, of course. Just as much as I enjoy everything else that is implemented into a game. I am not someone who dislikes how much graphic quality has moved forward, I just feel a bigger charm with older games at the moment.

There are always exceptions to certain games past, present and future so let's hope we're all satisfied :D

One of my biggest art heroes. His work and vision were truly one of a kind, and he’s been a huge inspiration to my own work. Such a heartbreaking loss.

Deeeeznuuuts477d ago

Remember seeing Dishonored for the first time when it released, fell in love with the art style straight away, so striking! And because of it, still holds up and will for years to come, RIP Viktor

JEECE477d ago

Yep I remember seeing some of the earliest concept art for Dishonored and hearing that the art director of Half-Life 2 was working on it and being excited.

And you are absolutely right, each of those games (HL2 and Dishonored) has a distinct art style that stands the test of time.

Relientk77477d ago

So sad to hear this. I absolutely love the Dishonored series and love the world and art style. It looks great and unique. I'm still hoping for a Dishonored 3

rokos477d ago

RIP Viktor love your work

Ethereal477d ago

Damn... Dishonored has such amazing art. RIP.

Arkane Co-Founder Says Dishonored and Prey Fans 'Will Be Happy' With His Next Game

WolfEye Studios president and co-founder of Arkane Studios Raphaël Colantonio has said Dishonored and Prey fans “will be happy” with his new studio's next game.

Marcus Fenix670d ago

Can’t wait to see what they’re working on

Relientk77670d ago

If it's something like Dishonored, then I am totally here for it.

TheNamelessOne670d ago

Let's hope. Their first game, Weird West, really wasn't my thing.

Miacosa670d ago

Ouch, already placing a sales cap on this is potentially bad as these games never seem to sell all too well. Hopefully the budget is in check so no one gets laid off after launch.

Psychonaut85670d ago

Fuck yeah. Even if it’s just a spiritual successor I want more titles like Dishonored in terms of art style, design and gameplay

Avowed's director says they "don't believe in living in fear" after Microsoft closed studios

"As a developer - and as a player - it's always sad and it always sucks to see studios close and devs lose their jobs. I really hope all those people land on their feet, because I know our indusutry is better with them in it," Patel tells the outlet. "As for me and how I look at things, I guess first and foremost: I don't believe in living in fear," the Avowed director.

XiNatsuDragnel728d ago

They'll get shut down that's how Microsoft work

gold_drake728d ago

Skuletor728d ago

It was probably already decided yesterday

BISHOP-BRASIL728d ago

"And then Phil Spencer took it as challenge..."

Elda728d ago

They better worry because Avowed doesn't look all that.
