From eGamer, "As of late, I have been struck by a recurring trend in the gaming world of criticising a game over its visual style (or aesthetics if you want to be technical). Most people equate visual aesthetics with the term ‘graphics’ and don’t understand that they are two very different concepts. Blame for this misunderstanding falls partly to gaming journalists and critics alike who have used the term as an encompassing word for all the visual wonderment a game spits out at you. Regardless, a differentiation needs to be made".

Half-Life 2 art director and Dishonored designer Viktor Antonov has died aged just 52.
One of my biggest art heroes. His work and vision were truly one of a kind, and he’s been a huge inspiration to my own work. Such a heartbreaking loss.
Remember seeing Dishonored for the first time when it released, fell in love with the art style straight away, so striking! And because of it, still holds up and will for years to come, RIP Viktor
So sad to hear this. I absolutely love the Dishonored series and love the world and art style. It looks great and unique. I'm still hoping for a Dishonored 3

WolfEye Studios president and co-founder of Arkane Studios Raphaël Colantonio has said Dishonored and Prey fans “will be happy” with his new studio's next game.
Ouch, already placing a sales cap on this is potentially bad as these games never seem to sell all too well. Hopefully the budget is in check so no one gets laid off after launch.
Fuck yeah. Even if it’s just a spiritual successor I want more titles like Dishonored in terms of art style, design and gameplay

"As a developer - and as a player - it's always sad and it always sucks to see studios close and devs lose their jobs. I really hope all those people land on their feet, because I know our indusutry is better with them in it," Patel tells the outlet. "As for me and how I look at things, I guess first and foremost: I don't believe in living in fear," the Avowed director.
Then gets shut down the next day. They should know better than to talk crazy like that.
Yes, they are.
Sadly, they are also underrated.
It's mostly because gamers and the media insist on using the term "graphics" to describe the ENTIRE visual experience of a game, which is moronic. Fidelity, animation, and art style should all merit discussion.
Graphics are, Art style and polish aren't.
Article title should be "realistic graphics are over-rated". The argument in general was about how games should not need to mimic a realistic art approach.
However there are also many top games that stay away from taking the realistic approach because they knnow that the graphics would be compared to real life and that it would never match up.
the new bioshock, MGS, uncharted and infamous (and a whole lot more, jsut can't think at the moment) all go for a softer approach and visually looks amazing.
actually lets compare infamous to prototype. Prototype goes for a realisticapproach and infamous goes for a cartoon/comic book approach. IMO I think infamous looks a whloe lot better.
Borderlands is another example, originallly it was meant to have a more realistic approach, I haven't seen any screenshots or videos so I can't comment on how it would have looked but the developers scrapped that idea and went for a cel-shaded look.
Anyway what I am trying to say is that no all games go for a realistic look, actually mainly FPS goes for that realistic look.
Most of the games I've put in my top lists have junk graphics however fun as hell to play.
Graphics do not equal or are not greater than all other aspects of a game.
I honestly don't care how a game looks as long as it plays well and is something I (would/can) enjoy. Graphics are lovely, but I am always going back to older games that don't match up to graphics of today's standards because of how it plays.
