What Sony Needs to do differently.

Sony has recently focused it’s efforts on a new model of the PlayStation 3 console, and to an improved online store with more features promised for the paying “PlayStation Plus” members, including more free games and content, and more reductions over both the PlayStation 3 console, and also the handheld PSVita.

The trouble is, Sony are currently experiencing a spot of financial hardship, and we don’t necessarily think that they have chosen the best methods to deal with this. Here is what Gareth Edwards thinks they should have done differently:

Sony dropped from 100 billion to a market cap of 12.13 billion from 2000-2011. They need to do something differently.

DragonKnight4994d ago

Not in their gaming division. That's the problem with these articles. They think Sony's troubles are because of Playstation and ignore that they aren't.

CraigandDayDay4994d ago (Edited 4994d ago )

Their gaming division has remained profitable. They are doing most things right. They've improved the PS3 since it released. The network is a lot better than at launch. The games just keep on coming.

PSN is still FREE. That is a HUGE differentiator for some gamers. When people are paying $60 a piece for games and then even more money for DLC on all these games, they shouldn't have to plunk down another $50-60 a year for the ability to use the online component of their already bought games.

The Vita is proof that Sony is listening to us. It has a party system and cross game chat built in the system. This means the PS4 will have these features as well. The Vita's online REMAINS FREE so that means the PS4 will most likely have FREE PSN still. PS+ will continue on the PS4 to provide Sony with an additional revenue stream and to provide us gamers with an endless slew of free/discounted games and other perks (automatic downloading, etc.).

Sony just needs to implement Gaikai into the PS4 and all their products. If they offer a seamless transition of gaming to where you can play PS exclusives and third party games on the PS4 and then save the game and instantly pick up where you left off on your Vita or Sony/third party tablets, they'll have a real game changer on their hands. I think the Vita will have a 4G/LTE model in the future that will allow seamless Gaikai integration for on-the-go portable/home console gaming, both online and offlline.

If they can get all their products talking to one another like Apple products do, they'll have a winner when the PS4 comes out. I should be able to control my PS4 with my Sony tablets and Sony phones. The PS4 should be able to stream content from Sony cameras and Sony Vaio computers. Finally, they should build in Gaikai into their Bravia Televisions so that people can play certain PlayStation games, which will pique their interest in the PS brand, so they might go out and buy a PS3/Vita/PS4, etc. Third party integration would make all of this even better. Oh, and btw, LOWER YOUR TV PRICES. LoL

@GribbleGrunger (below)

Well Said bubble to you. Sony has made mistakes this gen (released a year late and at a higher price, etc.) but they've more than made up for it with all the awesome games they have continued to throw at us this generation.

Christopher4994d ago

Sony's problem is they didn't account for growth in competition on all fronts when it comes to technology.

Omnislash4994d ago

@G33K
"Sony dropped from 100 billion to a market cap of 12.13 billion from 2000-2011. They need to do something differently."

Makes sense if youre some kind of stockholder, as a gamer Sony provided me with excellent service and quality products and lots of free games. As far as Im concerned they dont need to change anything but rather do more of what they already do.

Anon19744994d ago (Edited 4994d ago )

@G33K. Yep. Sony's market cap was much higher at the height of the tech bubble before the market crash. And then the market crashed. Oh, and hey, wasn't there another crash just recently I heard something about?

And obviously because market cap is lower versus the height of the tech bubble, we know something must be up with Sony, because the market is never wrong, correct? I mean, it's not like the market has ever overpriced or underpriced a company's stock before, am I right? The markets, analysts, traders and investors always know best.

Give me a break. You know what Sony needs to do? They need to cut production costs by outsourcing more manufacturing to foreign countries like their competition is doing because, sadly, it costs too damn much to manufacture in Japan and, like all electronics companies that export to the west, they need more stable foreign exchange markets and they need to streamline their product offerings. And guess what? FX markets are slowly stabilizing and Sony is restructuring it's manufacturing while reviewing their product lines.

They need to do nothing different. What they have done sold them over 100 million PS1 consoles, 156 million PS2 consoles and 75 million PSP handhelds.

They are the only company to carry on supporting their older machines which lead to the PS1 being supported for just over 10 years, the PS2 being supported for 12 years and the PSP being supported for about 8 years. Apart from the PS1, all of the above still sell today.

The PS3 has sold 67 million and will continue to sell for another 5 years at least. The Vita has sold 3 million and will continue to sell for at least another 9 years.

Sony are currently making profit from the PS2, PSP and PS3 and probably the PSVita. With PSMobile they will be making profit too. So far they have sold over 400 million games machines. No other company can come close to that figure.

Sony will continue to support their hardware with AAA titles and they will continue to offer unusual and unique games for the foreseeable future, through PSN, Gaikai, PSMobile and Blu-ray.

Negative press the is only thing that needs to change.

boybato4994d ago

I agree with everything you said however if we are referring to Sony as a whole, I guess they should focus on their other branches such as TVs/Laptops so that they could also bring it to the masses without the need of paying a premium price... I mean, I am a sucker for Sony products (specially the PS brand and their mobile devices) and is dying to own a Bravia but we all know that their TVs are overprices specially if you could buy something comparable which is 20-30% less their price.

PATRIOT7ME4994d ago

"Sony are currently making profit from the PS2, PSP and PS3 and probably the PSVita. With PSMobile they will be making profit too. So far they have sold over 400 million games machines. No other company can come close to that figure."

Not true. Nintendo has sold more than 600 million consoles, and unlike Sony they rarely sell them at a loss.

Altering the tone of news to placate Sony fanboys isn't going to change the reality of what's happening to Sony.

chasegarcia4994d ago (Edited 4994d ago )

They need less proprietary hardware and an ecosystem where everything made by Sony works together somehow.

DragonKnight4994d ago

I think you're confusing them with Microsoft.

Make money more efficiently?

ShaunCameron4992d ago

BANG! The PS3 was a bloated product that they sold for less than it costed them to make it just to appease fanboys who screamed for next-gen technology, next-gen features but didn't wanna pay next-gen price right out the gate. As a result, they lost a good $200 for every console sold. They thought that their other divisions were gonna keep making profits to offset the costs until even they started losing money as well.

Sony right now is a victim of their own excess.

gobluesamg4994d ago

People just have to down vote these articles and sites. All this repetitive negative press is ridiculous. Sony will be fine and will compete with the likes of Nintendo and Microsoft for years to come. Competition is a good thing!

hellvaguy4994d ago

Thats right. Even though PS3 isnt my first console of choice, its very cool in many ways and keeps the competitions pricing lower.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8556d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele55d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk55d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10156d ago (Edited 56d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit55d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg55d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10155d ago (Edited 55d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14956d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle68d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit68d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog69d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog69d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad69d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_69d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage69d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda68d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
