Do Doom 3’s Graphics Hold Up?

Kotaku - I've always felt strangely about Doom 3. On the one hand, it was a fairly revolutionary game, graphically. The lighting was striking. On the other hand, it looked kind of gross: humans in the game were starkly lit with strange, bump-mapped faces and odd, robotic movements.

This was one of my favorite games. There are some truly amazing mods out there that make this relic look better than most new games released today. If one is to release an ancient game like this at least take note from mods that are currently available and build up from that level. This version doesnt even come close to said mods and really doesn't add much visually from the original. Adding old doom, 3D support and some extremely minor clean up is all I can see and it just isn't good enough in my opinion. A missed opportunity and a wasted effort to revive a classic. If you cant or wont do it right then why do it at all? I wouldn't pay for this. Pass.

With the glorious, standout exception of Dishonored, Bethesda has fallen flat on their face as a publisher. They should have recognized id's laziness on this project and intervened until it was right for the fans. The fact that there are virtually no reviews either, is testament to their lack of faith in the game. Shameful.

Don't really see it fair to call them lazy when they got the game to run at 60fps.
That's in contrast to other HD ports which only do 30fps despite being on newer hardware.

When you compare it to other 'HD remasters', the visuals are pretty good.

... Also, using gifs to show visuals made me facepalm hard. Then again, it's kotaku, so I probably shouldn't be surprised.

To be fair dishonored and fallout new vegas are pretty good third party entries (even though fallout new vegas was actually made by most of the people who made the first two - which is ironic that they're now third party for the franchise) and also I'd much rather a publisher who puts faith in crazy ideas like a free-running multiplayer class based super customizable game than EA who actually has the opposite effect - taking good franchises and rendering them soul-less shells of their former selves.

Also doom 3, doom 2 and ultimate doom? This doesn't sound like it holds anything new for a hardcore Doom vet (someone who visibly grimaces at the name "flynn taggart"). Why this package seems to sound like it's not even aimed at original fans! It almost seems to me like it exists solely to recap people who have no clue. Seeing as there are kids with gameboy iphone covers who have never even seen an original gameboy it's not so hard to imagine that there's quite a serious audience of people unfamiliar with doom. Well this is all too little too late! The only other logical time to do this would be with a major sequel on the line which... oh wait look at that.

How strange. A company that's greatest impact on the industry happened two decades ago is trying to recouperate a stronger audience base for an upcoming sequel to that very franchise? How very odd. I now certainly understand why half the internet keeps face fucking their keyboard with their skull on every comment section for this game to keep reiterating the fact that a game which exists solely for xbox 360 owners who have no experience with doom would not offer much to current owners.

Well it certainly sucks they haven't given anything to PC gamers! It's not like hardcore PC doom vets have access to some amazing FREE programs and FREE files on FREE websites that have been made using the tools developed by the company for the actual game which were, in turn, released for FREE. Everyone keeps bitching about how doom 3 looks better on the original...well... play the original. It's cheap as shit and mods are free.

id software has been heading towards a downward spiral for the last decade. Doom 3 was shamelessly repetitive in its design and Rage fell plat on its face. Basically a corridor shooter that was disguised as an open world game. Not to mention their new id tech 5 engine on a technical level was a complete mess.

Rage is one of the best looking shooters this gen, the only reason people hated it was because Id software dared to make an engine that was console friendly which upset the PC elitist crowd.

The PC version had a lot of driver issues especially on AMDs side of the fence. They released the game with extremely low resolution textures and a lot of bugs on the PC. They later patched and fixed these things up, but basically on the PC side it wasn't that they released the game on consoles, it's that they snubbed the PC version a little bit in some areas especially when it was released.

I finally got around to playing it after most of the issues were resolved and it is a pretty good game, but there were some bugs and things in other areas that some people on the PC camp didn't expect from id considering their background.

The visual detail and presentation still stands out even today.

But i guess the same could be applied for games like Jet Set Radio HD, Shenmue 1/2 and Dead or Alive 2 ultimate (the game looks amazing for its time http://youtu.be/O6UkzTdYZaM... ) for original xbox.

And there´s many more games from these last 10-15 years that still hold up very well.
