XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review | The Game Jar

Josh Matthews: "Ultimately the game lacks the depth of the original or any of the modern imitators, but that’s OK. The whole experience is really well constructed and easy to play for people who aren’t super into the management side of it. Despite trying to poke holes in it my main complaints are technical and depth-based. Another area of concern is that the replayability is seriously reduced because of a lackluster story and stunted strategy possibilities. Other than that it is its own beast and good fun."

You just have to simply hate the genre to give it that low of a score.

Abriael4963d ago (Edited 4963d ago )

Agreed, or to be a very poor reviewer, and reading the very poor review, he is exactly that.

b_one4963d ago (Edited 4963d ago )

he has right, original was hard as hell, no sniper rifles, random maps, random enemy placement, enemy placement during crash site missions was time dependant too, for me there are better fan based xcom mods or remakes, just like recently shut down by 2k XCOM The Two Sides.

Fear and unknown terrain original xcom fundamental things.

@ b_one

Stay low and follow me to the extraction zone, I will rescue you from your nostalgia.

It's not supposed to be a remake.

b_one4962d ago

i dont want to be extracted, but good to know - maybe i will buy it for about 10 pounds, used. still it is worth a try the two sides fan production...

Abriael4962d ago (Edited 4962d ago )

If you think this i any easier than the original you're wrong. Enemies are placed in the same places only in story missions, that are a minimal percentage. The AI is ruthless from classic difficulty onwards, and very, very hard to beat without losses. On normal it's much easier, but that's why we have classic.

This reviewer simply thinks that giving it a lower than average score makes him look cool and "hardcore". The whole tone of the review evidences that pretty easily.

At the moment, this is easily my GOTY. It's simply that good and that fun, but feel free to be stuck in nostalgia. I can understand. I played the game for more than a decade, but this doesn't make the new one worse.

im using TTS remake to relax myself, every mission is kind of new - i dont even care about story line or to beat aliens, just combat them, on random ground.

for now, i will wait for what they gonna do with this game, patches, dlcs - still its damn XCOM brand - im even hot for this shooter thing as it was so fkin good old 60s-70s... feeling

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930933d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183933d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

JL2930932d ago (Edited 932d ago )

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
