XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review - TGH

TGH Writes: Back in 1994, there was an interesting concept for a video game; by combining turn-based strategy, base development, and the terrifying aliens from outer space – this game was X-COM: UFO Defense in North America and UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe. With commercial success, the XCOM series has spawned multiple sequels and a loyal fanbase. With over a decade since the cancellation of X-COM: Genesis, 2K Games is ready to reboot the franchise in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Now out of hibernation, does this wartime epic bold well in 2012, or should this series be abducted to a fall away place?

Going to have to add this to my Christmas list with all the great reviews it is getting. I enjoyed the demo as well.

For me it's defo living up to expectations, I already had to restart the game as I failed miserably on normal ironman mode (hint it's not easy for a newbie like me!), but it's a testament to the games quality that it didn't put me off playing and that I'm coming back for some more punishment!

My GOTY.

The only other game I'm getting this year is Halo 4.
But man i dont think it will top xcom for me.

This wasn't even close to my radar but it looks fantastic. I'd seen the name and just assumed it had been remade as a dumb FPS. Damn, two weeks ago I doubted I'd have more than one good game to play until 2013, now I'm overloaded.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
