yep, time to quit.. thank God i invested in Blu-Ray (3 /w ps3) not HD-DVD. something was "fishy" when M$ refused to put one in the 360. like blu-ray, consoles sell new technology...

I don't buy this article. There were very good reasons for the 360 to NOT have a built-in HD-DVD drive, considering when it was designed and released.

2 years ago, when the 360 game out, HD drives were much more expensive than they are now. The PS3's large price point on release was largely attributed to the Blu-Ray drive. The 360 would've been at LEAST that much with a built-in HD-DVD drive, if not more, considering that HD drives were more expensive 2 years ago than they were even 1 year ago. AND they wouldn't have the Sony/Playstation brand behind them like the PS3 does.

It's very likely the 360 would've been a huge flop at a $500-600 price point, in which case, not much would've changed, except the 360 would've been less of a threat to the PS3 and thus the HD format war would've ended the exact same way. The gaming media would've slammed the 360 for the same reason the PS3 was slammed in the first half of 2007.

For Microsoft, it was basically damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't. I really don't see this playing out any differently unless the 360 had a built-in HD-DVD drive and Microsoft had kept the $399 price tag at a huge loss - which doesn't make sense for them, because they don't have the same sort of stake that Sony does in the format war.

Man, the gaming media is getting annoying these days. The same people who slammed Sony for including a Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 at a vastly increased price are now the same ones slamming Microsoft for not doing the same thing. They aren't happy unless they're saying "Nah nah, I told you so" to SOMEONE.

If 2 to 3 months from now their still manufacturing than you have a problem. They can't halt production on a dime.

I on the other hand am considering buying a Sony BR PC player for 200

I thought Toshiba would know better than to try and backstab Sony. Nintendo did it in the past and failed. That lead to Sony becoming a gaming giant. Now Toshiba who had joined forces with Sony and IBM to create the beloved but tricky cell chip now are about to be handed their arses on a blu-ray disc. Sony will now with other leading companies but mainly Sony reap the pure benefits of blu-ray format licensing. OMFG. It was greed and enticement i believe especially by M$ that got Toshiba into this predicament. Netflix which is a major dvd distributor is now only on the Blu-ray wagon. This move will totally put HD-DVD 6ft below. Consumers can now buy a one format system (PS3) or other, and not worry about anymore silly format wars. Now if only that other silly company would just release Transformers blu-ray this easter holiday. that would be nice

It would have been nice if Toshiba had thrown down the gauntlet and made HD-DVD drives (1080P) widely available for $99 over the Christmas holidays. Even if they lost the war (it seemed inevitable anyways), the could have dragged this out a little longer. The fanboys in this war fail to see how fast prices have come down due to the competition. One more year and we would have easily had $99 players on both sides. With HD-DVD pretty much being buried at this point, Blu-Ray player and movie prices are likely to significantly slow their massive downward movement as HD-DVD doesn't really pose a threat any more.

I just love it how the BABOONS will now have to support Blu-ray after all the crap that came out of their ugly mouths.....AHAAHAHA

360 needs this HD format war to continue because once HD-DVD calls it quits, people in mass will flock to the PS3...but given enough time they can develop a blu-ray add-on to counter

The sooner that this is COMPLETELY over the better for consumers. Less confusion at retail = a quicker adoption rate for HDTV's and blu-ray leading up to the switch to digital in early 09. This is why the hollywood studios are trying to wrap this up despite MS trying to drag it out.

once the financial loss is lessened by blitzkreig HD-DVD price slashing, and Universal/Paramount/Drea officially declares their exclusivity axed, i expect to hear Toshi folding their cards. Until then they will still tell us they are fully supporting the format. but yes, its been time for it to die for a while now. please let it die, i'm sick of hearing about it mostly

- MS announces Blu Ray add-on for XB360
- MS announces Blu Ray support for next gen console
- Toshiba ends HD-DVD production

Those are the only things left to say on this HD war topic. The rest is just repetition of old news...

I'll still buy a HD-DVD over Blu-Ray when given the choice. It can be lonely at the top, especially when there is little demand. Hate to see Blu-Ray fail, too.

that was funny Kaz Hirai. it's not gonna matter if hd-dvd quits or not because blue-ray has established a firm foot in the industry. also it has ps3 by its side and will soon have xbox too, lol. does hd-dvd still cost 400 dollars? that's as much as a ps3.

Why would Toshiba give up on their format? Sure they are getting outsold by blu ray by but as long as people buy/sell HD-DVD's Toshiba is going to stay in the game and make as much cash as they can until Blu ray disks become the next DVD.
