RIAA talks about network filters

Cary Sherman, President of the RIAA, speaks about proposed network filters that search for copyright violations. He proposes to put spyware on users computers.

I remember during the height of the Napster furor, a Sony executive (Sony Pictures Entertainment US senior VP Steve Heckler) came along and said (direct quote):

"The [music] industry will take whatever steps it needs to protect itself and protect its revenue streams..It will not lose that revenue stream, no matter what."

"Sony is going to take aggressive steps to stop this. We will develop technology that transcends the individual user. We will firewall Napster at source - we will block it at your cable company, we will block it at your phone company, we will block it at your [ISP]. We will firewall it at your PC.

"These strategies are being aggressively pursued because there is simply too much at stake."

This story is not a suprise to anyone who pays attention; Sony is one of the most zealous anti-fair use members of the RIAA and MPAA. They are trying to bend technology to enforce their copyrights.

The internet erupted in revulsion at their hubris and gaul at the time, but I fear many people dont remember what they are up to -- especially here at N4G.
