Black Mesa, formerly known as Black Mesa: Source, is a remake of Valve's very first game. It makes use of the Source engine which, while hardly cutting edge, does allow for the game to look vastly improved over the original. Valve itself ported Half-Life to the Source engine years ago, though it was hardly a major overhaul. Black Mesa takes things a significant step further: everything has been built from scratch, including not only new and improved graphics, but also an excellent new soundtrack, new voice acting, larger map sizes, and more. The game both looks and sounds better than Half-Life: Source, and really, it's superior in most every way. The AI, particularly that of friendlies, is the one glaring weak point from my experience; it was always a crapshoot whether it would attack enemies, and it never made much of an effort to avoid being attacked.
The studio responsible for refining Half-Life with an unofficial, Valve-approved reimagining has teased an upcoming project that needs beta testers.
JASON WRITES: When Half-Life 1 first released, it was revolutionary. Its approach to video game design and storytelling sent ripples through the gaming industry and its influence can be seen in just about every AAA game that has been released since, at least on some level.
If you are after a more modern iteration of this fantasic game, I highly suggest that you play Black Mesa (third-party remake of Half-Life made in the Source game engine).
The graphics are not top notch but they greatly enhance the experience (especially in the alien world) and the effects added are very nice.
I had a blast playing this on Steam Deck and it was a much better experience than playing vanilla Half Life 1
