Why Sonic Is Better Than Mario

It’s an age old battle and one which divides generations, ruins relationships and destroys friendship. I am of course referring the probably the longest standing battle in video games, who’s better? Sonic or Mario?

Mario is clearly better than Sonic.

waltyftm4990d ago

I am 35 years old and used to argue about this in school, oh and Sonic is still the best.

Gazondaily4990d ago (Edited 4990d ago )

Haha yeah, the age old argument.

I always supported Sonic! YEARS ago I remember a gaming magazine cover featuring Mario and Sonic having an arm wrestle. If the quality of the games in the years to follow is anything to go by, the result would be that Sonic would now be a paraplegic.

It's a shame though; I still want Sonic to win. In my opinion, there has yet to be a Sonic game that can even rival Super Mario 64 let alone Mario's subsequent and equally impressive affairs.

Still- a true fan never loses hope. You can do it Sonic! One day.....maybe....

dedicatedtogamers4990d ago

Mario still has good videogames coming out under his name. Sonic doesn't.

The end.

TenkoTAiLS4990d ago

Sonic Generations and Sonic Colours would like a word. They were both brilliant and highly praised recent Sonic games. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was also very well received.

I just hope that Sega can keep him on the current upward trend.

Nerdmaster4990d ago (Edited 4990d ago )

@TenkoTAiLS

Brilliant? Far from it, my friend. They were... kind of fun. But not that good. Even the 2D parts in Sonic Generations had strange physics, the jump was off and the spin dash was terrible (and don't even get me started on the final boss).

As a character, Sonic will always be cooler than Mario. I was in Japan for three weeks in August and I returned with some Sonic stuff, but no Mario stuff. Still, we have to face reality and admit that Sonic games nowadays are just not that good. Even the ones considered the best games are very flawed.

Tapewurm4990d ago

I'm just glad the author of this story actually used the word "Than" correctly :) and on topic....Sonic is clearly way cooler than Mr. Italian Plumber will ever be. SEGA!!!!

mike1up4990d ago (Edited 4990d ago )

You mean the same Sonic that's currently sleeping on Mario's couch?

I am a Nintendo fanboy until my last breath, but we settled this one about a decade ago. The bottom line is that the Super Mario franchise was strong enough to carry Nintendo through their "hard times/ F* ups*. Sonic couldn't do the same for Sega.

RockmanII74990d ago

That's more of a Nintendo is better than Sega argument than a Mario is better than Sonic one. The article talks more about the character instead of the game series.

boybato4990d ago

no one is better than the italian plumber who was made by japanese guys who could speak english and looks like a mexican.

CBaoth4990d ago

Mario must have more hair on his back than Ron Jeremy...

DarkHeroZX4990d ago

Idk last time I checked sonic was fighting beings that could destroy the universe.

Godmars2904990d ago

One of them made a smooth transition from 2D to 3D and back again, while the other...not so much.

I think this is how Japanese devs need to think. Catering to the west is a terrible idea. I personally, seek out Japanese developed games because they bring a unique experience to gaming. They just stand out more that way.

Eonjay46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

What do you mean when you say this is how they 'need to think'. I understand the idea of wanting to do them without worrying about Western sensibilities but I also think a Japanese dev can do whatever the hell they want. They don't have to 'think' the way some westerner in a forum says they have to think. You think you are giving someone a compliment but you are really being weird. Its not about who you are but what you do. Last year's GOTY was a western studio that made a JRPG. You didn't see any Japanese people claim that a studio in a Western company had to think a certain way. And yes, I do understand thats not what you were saying but I think we should always challenge our own viewpoints. Personally I have love the unique experiences that devs in Japan bring and I agree they don't need to cater to Western sensibilities. I only take issue with you saying how they need to think. Thats dangerous.

shinXseijuro45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

What he’s referring to is when a company like Atlus does a game and one of the characters per se ; call one of the other kids a retard , they shouldn’t have to censor the final product because of snowflakes all the way in America that are constantly ranting on twitter . None of these folks are real fans and only look for stuff to cry about . If you start pandering too much they end up taking more than a leg and an arm . Japanese humour is so funny but I hate when it’s censored because of “ western sensibilities “

jwillj2k445d ago

Everyone understood the meaning behind the message but you. “I think” you need to go to the mirror, look yourself in the eyes call yourself an idiot sandwich.

The sonic music is iconic the mega drive games were some of the best on the system but i wouldn't say they were free of western influence especially since 3 was composed in part by Michael Jackson

But honestly most of the crush 40 soundtrack music lives in my head rent free

Flenter46d ago

Sonic 2 Emerald Hill ❤️

drizzom45d ago

Please. Doesn't hold a candle to Chemical Plant Zone.

Stopac46d ago

Uhhh that's a strange thing for him to say. Even in the interview he admits to listening to a lot of western music.

NotoriousWhiz46d ago

Inspiration and trend chasing are not the same thing.

Eonjay46d ago

I think its strange that the topic of Western catering comes up with Sonic at all. Sometimes things just are what they are.

SEGA celebrates 35 Years of Sonic the Hedgehog

"Today, Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most iconic and beloved brands in the industry, is thrilled to announce its 35th anniversary this year." - SEGA.

maximusprime_121d ago

In June, Sonic the Hedgehog will be 35 years old.

Sonic the Hedgehog was one of my first game that got me into playing video games. First game, first console- Sega Mega drive (genesis)
Happy 35th anniversary Sonic

TGG_overlord121d ago

On June 21st if I'm not wrong. I'm glad to hear it =) My first console was the SEGA Master System, and yes, Indeed.

Agent75121d ago

But Sonic hit the ropes after Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast, Sonic Racing was a bit of a comeback, but it never really recovered. Sonic Frontiers and Superstars were decent, Adventure 3 is way overdue. I was there in 1991 when the first game launched on the Mega Drive. SEGA keeps throwing out boring collections, it's time to move on with new collections.

Redgrave121d ago

But his movies have done well, despite all odds. I'd even say they are better than the first animated Mario movie.

TGG_overlord121d ago

That is correct, I'll let people decide that one for themselves ;)

TGG_overlord121d ago

I've been down with the first three Sonic games, as for the rest, I don't know all that much about them. I agree with what you said about new collections though.

PRIMORDUS120d ago

Also pretty close to the date when Donkey Kong came out July 9, 1981, first game with Mario, who will be 45 this year. 🎂

Chocoburger120d ago

Here's to another 35 years! 🦔

Profchaos120d ago

This is a weird one I'm looking forward to this been a fan since the mega drive despite losing interest in the franchise for a very long time I only got back in with mania
