WipEout to be resurrected by Sony's Evolution Studio

Sony is to hand over the WipEout IP to UK developer Evolution Studios, MCV understands. The series appeared to have come to an end with the closure of fellow Sony studio and series creator Studio Liverpool last month.

...ok good

good devs, but i cant see that happening.

BitbyDeath4983d ago

Liverpool staff had been moved into Evo studios so it makes sense.

This is great... I think Sony restructing us going to be much better for them.

While it was awesome for them to have so many devs, I think they really need to build up certain devs (like they are doing it appears).

as long as Wipeout continues to be the same, I have no problem with this move. This does however seem to banish my dreams that Evo Studios will help Polyphony with the ralyl sections of GT6.

But who knows

Evos site is under maintenance right now as well.

I have been saying this for so long to deaf ears. Just because the studio shut down doesn't mean there will be no more Wipeout.

Yes but there might not be no more good Wipeout games. That why your comment has been falling on deaf ears.

MIGHT is the key word here. People always think because someone else takes over that automatically means that the series will suck. But Evolution is not exactly bad at making games and they might very well do a better job the Liverpool did. They might even take Wipeout to new heights. My point is what is it with people and premature negativity? See what they do first and then critize it. What is with the 'It will most probably suck' attitude? Despite popular belief Evolution's Motorstorm games were awesome.

No one has taken over, Studio Liverpools staff have been merged with Evolution before, then they separated to produce the latest Wipeout game. If they have been merged to evolution studio then I imagine they'll all find themselves in a familiar working environment, where they've been capable of producing good, big budget games before.

Good news, Evolution Studios did a great job on the Motorstorm series, let's see what they now can do with WipEout.

Still missing Studio Liverpool a bit tho.

Megaton4983d ago

Motorstorm is a great series. Definitely curious to see what they do with a future racer.

Cajun Chicken4983d ago

Evolution better had employed some Studio Liverpool key peeps. Never been impressed with Motorstorm.

Also; MAKE ROLLCAGE HD.

MySwordIsHeavenly4983d ago

Never been impressed with Motorstorm?

Seriously?

Amplitude4983d ago

He obviously hasn't played Apocalypse. Or Pacific Rift. Or the first one.
Or Arctic Edge.

Stolen PS1 WipEout Games Axed from the Xbox Store

A new release on the Xbox Series X|S consoles this week has been yanked from sale, after it appeared to infringe on Sony’s software.

The shameless Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout appeared to include slightly edited emulated versions of the original WipEout and its successor WipEout 3: Special Edition, with minor texture changes and button prompt alterations.

But after being exposed in a Digital Foundry video – where it’s also revealed that developer LLS Games pinched a CGI reimagining of the original game’s intro from YouTube – it’s no longer available for sale.

I almost bought it just for the novelty... but at $12 it seemed a bit pricey.

"I’m Pretty Gutted It Never Got Finished" - The Untold Story Of WipEout Zero

The WipEout series was, at one point, considered to be a dazzling showcase for new Sony hardware. The original game accompanied the PS1's release in the West and arguably did a lot of sell the console to sceptical punters, while WipEout Pure and WipEout 2048 were jaw-dropping launch titles for the PSP and PS Vita, respectively.

PS4 sadly didn't get a WipEout at launch, although it did get the excellent Omega Collection in 2017, a pack which pulled together content from WipEout HD and the aforementioned PS Vita entry and holds the distinction of being the only instalment to top the UK sales charts. Had things turned out a little differently, we could have been playing one of the most dramatic reimaginings of the series yet seen on PS4; an entry which would have retained the anti-gravity mechanics but evolved the on-track action into something closer to a traditional racing game.
