Bleszinski doesn't want discs on next-gen consoles

Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski has suggested that he doesn't want next-generation consoles to include support for optical media.

Not gonna happen...optical media will stay for a long time.

saladthieves5000d ago

Pretty much.

Bleszinski might be overlooking the fact that not everyone would probably afford or have the means to go completely digital.

Some people don't have access to a fast internet connection, some people have caps on theirs etc.

In my case it's far more practical/cheaper to take a 10 minute walk to the nearest EB Games, buy a game rather than spending significantly more time downloading it.

blumatt5000d ago

Optical media will be here for the PS4 and 720. I just hope they BOTH have Blu Ray this time so there's a level playing field and the developers won't have any excuses for not using the available disc space this time.

I'm sure the 720 will have Blu Ray this time though. It would be crazy not to. That would be like the Wii U coming out and not having Blu Ra.....oh. lol j/k All joking aside, I'm sure the 720 will have Blu Ray this time.

I still wonder if the PS4 will have some sort of new 4K Blu Ray discs that it will play.

sourav935000d ago (Edited 5000d ago )

I agree. Have you seen the prices of full digital games? For example, I bought BF3 back in February for £30 brand new from Amazon. But on the PS Store, it is STILL £50.
I bought MW3 about 3 months ago for £25, though I still see a steep price of £45 on some high street retailers. But, on PS Store, the game costs, wait for it, £60! And that is without any DLC; just the game.
So, to sum up, optical/physical media isn't going anywhere for a long time.

Jazz41084999d ago (Edited 4999d ago )

Thats the exact problem sony will face with Gaiki or however its spelled and onlive on its own.

Insomnia_845000d ago

Bleszinski can zack my Dikszinski. Speaking without thinking, he does that often.

DeadlyFire5000d ago

He only says this because Unreal Engine 4 might not be fully capable on the new consoles without a cloud service.

Am I right?

konnerbllb5000d ago

That's the dumbest thing I've read today. It's just an engine.

DeadlyFire5000d ago (Edited 5000d ago )

Yeah, but Epic thinks the world revolves around their engine. What I am saying is that he is worried about it coming to consoles without the full ability like what can be present on the PC in 2013. Only way to counter that on a console would to have a quality Cloud service that could stream it at a higher resolution. That is likely what he wants anyway.

An example of this is Crytek. There 3rd build of their engine has been around for awhile and pretty much does everything Unreal Engine 4.0 does, but they have not shown it all off in a trailer yet.

ALLWRONG5000d ago

Already happening disc is losing the war. I like my game disc but throwing up your hands and saying "not gonna happen" is just denial. People just want to hold on to something, even if it's obsolete.

madjedi4999d ago

No they are right it is not going to happen this upcoming gen, optical media will be obsolete at some point, duh.

Look for a flash memory device/drive to be the "discs" in the ps5/xbox 4.

kwyjibo5000d ago

What a load of bull. Optical media won't stay for long, it might manage to get on next gen consoles, but it'll be way obsolete before that gen is out.

The vita finally got rid of optical media, pretty much all Apple products shun optical media and an increasing number of laptops are ignoring it too.

Here are the downsides of optical media - it's bulky, degrades easily, slow reads, no writes, requires intricate moving parts in the console.

Here are it's benefits - it's cheap.

Solid state memory will kill it dead.

RivetCityGhoul5000d ago (Edited 5000d ago )

are you an idiot. you do realize that people have downloading caps on their internet services. Oh let me guess that somehow just gonna disappear. more & more companies are doing the whole cap services even now all phone companies are doing it. oh we must all be millionaires like who can just exceed cap limits and download so many GB worth of data in games. you haven't even takin into account that not all countries have any sort of decent internet services. consoles generations last every 7-8 yrs if you honestly think that somehow were just going to go digital in such a short amount time, then your delusional STFU

kwyjibo5000d ago

RivetCityGhoul, you asked me whether I was an idiot.

I am not an idiot.

I do not have to ask you, because I know you're an idiot. I did not mention digital distribution once. I mentioned flash memory, which will only continue to get cheaper.

Why did you reply to my post without even reading it?

Bleszinski doesn't want discs on next-gen consoles

well, thats toooooo damn bad CLIFFY B not going to happen.
as XWOW said: optical media will be around a looooong time.

madjedi4999d ago (Edited 4999d ago )

Yes and no, for movies/music yes, but for gaming rotational media needs to eventually die off at some point, because it is going to be slowing everything else down.

The 2 slowest devices, in gaming is typically the hdd and disc drive.

You figure the ps5 and xbox 4, will switch to solid state storage(ie flash cards/drives) for games, but maintain a disc drive for music/movies and maybe bc.

GuyManDude5000d ago

It could include a disc drive and still not use discs for games. A flash memory/solid state-type format would be great for games in terms of fast load times, better draw distance, no texture pop-in, etc. I just don't know how it would be feasible on a cost basis. A 20-40GB cartridge/card would cost a lot more than a blu-ray disc I would think.

The ultimate goal I can't wait for is games installed on a solid state drive. Having the entire game ready to be read off the drive instantly at any time...developers won't know what to do with themselves.

RmanX10005000d ago

I read the title and that was enough. NOT guna happen XD

Commando475000d ago

I believe in cloud gaming and downloadable games but what I don't believe in is removing the physical media drives from consoles. The huge reason being is that not every gamer in the world has a strong and stable internet connection, so just because they can't afford or simply dont have one...you want to cast them out? Its strange because all the people who want to remove physical media from consoles never even bother to touch on that point.

Also a lot of people want to sell their physical copies which is something you cant really do with a digital copy.

Gears Of War Creator Is "Thrilled" That The Franchise Isn't Xbox Exclusive Anymore

Gears of War creator Cliff 'CliffyB' Bleszinski is "thrilled" more people will be able to experience the original game when it arrives on PlayStation.

Gears of War: Reloaded is set to be released later this month, on 26th August, across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It's a revamped edition of the original Gears of War, which first debuted on Xbox almost 20 years ago (yes, it has really been that long).

Ouch. Since when do we consider Cliffy B the "co-creator" of Gears?

maximusprime_280d ago

Good spot, title corrected. I copied title from Gamespot because I couldn't fit or amend Eurogamer's long title..

Yes Cliffy B is the creator

VenomUK279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

He’s changing his tune. When Microsoft bought the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games Cliff Blezinski gloatingly wrote: ‘I suppose this puts the nail in the coffin of the question “Will Gears ever come to PlayStation?”’

Maybe he’s in line for all the royalties that will come from the PS5 remaster.

Cacabunga279d ago

I haven’t seen this face for an eternity..

Doc-Bobko280d ago

Best thing for this franchise is to be multiplatform.

Shane Kim280d ago

So why did you do it exclusive in the first place?

ocelot07280d ago

Microsoft offered a lot of money is my guess. I remember they actually had a PS3 build up and running (not great mind you). Not sure if they planned on releasing Gears 2 and future installments at that point. My guess yes but Microsoft made a deal to make it exclusive and then out right buying the IP.

Reaper22_279d ago

Just like sony did Resistance .

franwex279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Not to mention that it was the game that convinced Microsoft to use 512MB instead of 256 of RAM when they showed them the build difference. Microsoft was so impressed that they HAD to have it.

UnbreakableAlex279d ago

Back in the day Gears was graphically top notch and Playstation didn't have the power to run it. Nowdays the hardware is pretty equal.

TriniOutsider279d ago

The PS3 had plenty of power to run.

DarXyde279d ago

PS3 was pretty capable hardware and it had a better (albeit difficult) CPU than the Xbox 360, though Xbox 360 had a better GPU. It was generally a wash between the two. The RAM difference came down to configuration (unified on X360 + 10MB EDRAM, split RAM pools on PS3).

Don't know what you're going on about.

1Victor274d ago

@breakablealex: “ Back in the day Gears was graphically top notch and Playstation didn't have the power to run it.”
Is that why PS3 low/mid gen games was looking far better than Xbox 360? Is that why uncharted beat gears at the game of the year awards and the other 2 ether won or was nominated while gears was left at the lock doors 😱

.
“ Nowdays the hardware is pretty equal.“
😩🤦🏿
I see the obscured decease is spreading 😱

SockeyBoy280d ago

There are two developers I can't stand, this dude and Phil Fish

YoungKingDoran279d ago

I think Cliff has been humbled in recent times and seems alot better than in the past

Hereandthere279d ago

As an xbox only player, im happy that final fantasy is not exclusive to sony anymore. nice trade.

UnbreakableAlex279d ago

Unfortunately FF games get worse and worse...

jznrpg279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

I wouldn’t hold your breath as FF16 didn’t sell at all on Xbox. Maybe one more chance if that

gold_drake279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

trade?
girl. lets wait and see.

square goes where they get the most money from. be it exclusivity or not.
