A Dark Souls Easy Mode Would Be Great, Actually

Pixels or Death's Mike Barrett argues that an easier difficulty for Dark Souls could only be a good thing despite the internet's outcries.

"I’m not saying that Dark Souls isn’t hard. It is, but only because all of your accumulated gaming skills up to that point mean nothing when you enter this world. You must learn to crawl again and make mistakes before you can really get on your feet again. The amazing sense of reward and accomplishment you get after taking down a boss or finding a new bonfire is really just the game patting you on the head for doing your homework like a good little student.

Thus, the difficulty is a byproduct, not the point of the world. Nothing except changing the fundamental mechanics of the game could change that, something that clearly won’t happen."

Who would have thought that for all the complaining the PC master race do about console gamers dumbing down the medium, they're the culprits for one of the greatest and most difficult franchises of this generation being dumbed down via their whining and difficulty patches.

Tragic.

Parappa5011d ago

The game was already dumbed down from the start. Demon's Souls is where the REAL difficulty is.

Dac2u5011d ago

While I agree that Demon's souls was harder, Dark Souls was a better, more polished game all around, imo.

Swiggins5011d ago

Implies Demons Souls is harder...ignoring the insanely broken magic system...

Oh Lol...

TheFirstClassic5011d ago

Gotta disagree, thought dark souls was a lot harder than Demon's Souls, or at least cheaper and less skill based.

Gwyn-Lord-Of-Cinder5008d ago

Parappa dude i played dark souls first and , then bough demon souls and destroyed it. didnt summen a single person and only died about a dozen times.

what do you expect, the gaming medium has the most hypocrites I've ever.

srcBFMVBMTH5011d ago

I'VE EVER WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Reverent5011d ago

Lol things like this^ is why I love all you guys on comment sections.

Allsystemgamer5011d ago

I hope you realize console gamers were complaining about the difficulty aswell. But no just because the pc crowd showed a demand for a "product" they are the only culprits responsible for whining right?

Pc players get a port where their controls don't work = entitled elitists

Ps3 gamers get skyrim that may or may not work correctly = victims of poor development

Bunch of hypocrites all you are.

Hicken5011d ago

Actually, seems like the majority of console gamers love the difficulty of the Souls games.

PC version of DS is made with a controller in mind, and From Software told everybody up front it wasn't gonna be a top-notch port. They told the truth.

Skyrim was supposed to not be crap; Bethesda said it would be even on all platforms, said the problems of Oblivion and Fallout were gone. Seems like they lied.

Where's the hypocrisy?

Sure, it would be great if Dark Souls had all that crap PC gamers want, but unlike on a console, they can add that in, themselves, and maybe help out a non-PC developer who made the game available on PC purely because of fan interest.

How is that the same as a developer that should be familiar with hardware, is aware of bugs in their chosen engine, and yet opts to release a flawed game anyway for the sake of making money?

BrutallyBlunt5011d ago

Hicken, the PS3 has been a struggle for many developers. It still give programmers difficulties, the RAM is split, the seek and read times for the BLURAY drive is slow. The game was developed by PC developers and of course they will be far more familiar with the XBOX360 architecture. Bethesda even had issues with the Shivering Isles DLC for the PS3.

Basically it's a whole different beast. Even Gabe Newel had choice words about the system until he finally got his hands dirty. But Skyrim is totally different than Portal. It's an open world game and probably gave them some headaches on the PS3. Rage also had issues, the list goes on and on.

The difference with Dark Souls is you have a console developer who struggled with PC development. So of course just like PS3 owners whining and complaining about those PC games, PC gamers have every right to complain about the shoddy port of Dark Souls. It doesn't matter if they told everyone it might not be as good as they hoped, people still don't expect half-assed ports.

You are not a PC gamer. In fact you seem to hate any PC gamer talking about how much better the PC is compared to consoles. Which means you're biased from the get go, so of course you will defend a console developer over a PC developer.

madjedi5010d ago (Edited 5010d ago )

@all

"I hope you realize console gamers were complaining about the difficulty aswell." And the rest of us, who don't need to have our hand held like frail old women, told them stop being a damn crybaby and learn to play the game correctly.

Of course this was maybe 3 yrs ago when demons souls first came out and players told the whiners to man up or shut up.

But your a barely 1 month old account, so why should you know anything about how console gamers treat pc gamer. Especially for a series that has a "seperates the men from the boys", reputation.

"Bunch of hypocrites all you are." Again dumbass unless you can post specific names saying hypocritical statements. This is as stupid as a console gamer generalising all pc gamers as graphics whores, that don't care at all about gameplay.

However bad the console gamers are, you have pc guys that are just as bad.

I remember 1 article lately where ps3 fans were, letting bethesda have it, and as much as i like their games they deserve it.

Lol at people wanting to play the souls game in little girl mode.

Your supposed to adapt to the game, not the other way around, our brains are capable of learning and adapting. Utilize them.

@me Well some of us didn't, obviously know it was a mistranslation.

Really calling another person out for platform bias for or against it, then turning around and doing the exact same thing, perfect example.

MEsoJD5011d ago

The easy mode was confirmed to be a mistranslation. I wish people would shut up about it.

Reverent5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

Agreed. IF they added an "Easy Mode", people like me would probably abuse it. I have toughed it through both Souls games multiple times, loved every moment of it, and loved the difficulty... But I will admit that I lack the discipline to stick with the difficulty if I don't have to and I know plenty of other people have the same problem.

DS/DeS are difficult by default with no option to make it easier, so I am forced to play the game as is. If there was an easy mode, I would use easy mode instead simply by lack of discipline like I said. It would be such a shame for that to happen, especially since the Souls game's primary length of play time is because you'll die and have to repeat the same thing over and over (In a good way of course). If I can just get through a whole dungeon or cave without ever dying, I have basically turned what was supposed to take 10+ hours to get through, into 2.

WeskerChildReborned5011d ago

I don't think it's bad that they are adding an easy mode, yea the game is suppose to be challenging but so what if their is an easy mode, just play the hard mode if you want a challenge.

xXBlondieVanHarlowXx5011d ago

It just doesn't feel right :/ It's an amazing experience yes, but part of that is due to the challenge. I remember starting DS for the first time & thinking the devs were insane. After getting a grip of everything & traveling light i finally managed to scrape my way to the end. After beating the final boss you feel this great sense of accomplishment. People who would start their first DS game on easy would miss that opportunity.

DragonKnight5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

PC gamers actually complained about the difficulty of Dark Souls? LMFAO! Guess maybe more time should be spent on game skills and less on whining about graphical options.

ziggurcat5011d ago

bu-bu-but they have mouse & keyboard...

Allsystemgamer5011d ago

The mouse and keyboard doesnt work on the pc version. Move the mouse left and the camera spins out of control.

DragonKnight5011d ago

@allsystemgamer: I believe the /s is implied.

srcBFMVBMTH5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

Agreed, and well said sir.

Omnislash5011d ago

PC gamer: OMG Dark Souls looks so superior on my super expensive PC!! Now I can die like a bitch in 1820p!!! yes!!!

MetalProxy5011d ago

Didnt the PC guys get the "Prepare to die" edition? They will have to change it to "prepare for a cake walk" edition... PC exclusive.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

"Like it or not its time to agree with me"

DarXyde211d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake211d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
