CvG has always been flamebait actually. CvG, Gametrailers, and Gamersyde constantly create flame wars with video and screen shot comparisons of each multi-platform game that is released.

As for the "no load times" I'm not going to say that CvG isn't wrong about the lack of any real difference, but I will point out that plenty of other sources say that there -is- a significant difference in between the load times due to the install. It's kind of an "all against them" type of situation really.

Not to mention it's not like you just have to sit and look at a download bar for the 20 minutes or so. It retells the entire DMC series story on the download screens whole your waiting and it has pictures and character bios that appear when its telling the story. Not stuff we didn't already know, but to newcomers it kind of introduces them to the story and it also recaps for us veterans things that we might have forgot.

SO! All in all? the story itself is flamebait and is in no way as bad as the article makes it sound.

wow....who really cares about loading the game? study the games booklet, get some snacks for the awsome gaming ahead, or best of all come here and argue on N4G :)...... "some" people make it seem like the game is unplayable.

Not sure about everyone else but when i played the demo on both PS3 and 360. Load times where quicker on PS3. They where both from the drive.

So 20 minutes is not a big deal. But I gotta wonder why they programmed the game to do an install for the PS3? Would this be because the Blu-ray read/write time is slow? That would make the only sense to me.

if i get this game its for the 360...idc about load times...but 5 gbs here 5 gb for oblivion and various other games taking up space on my PS3 HDD, i gotta save my space for exclusives.

here's what you need to do....buy the game on ps3 and wait till you absolutely can't hold it much longer(number 2) put the game on and install it and.............run to the bathroom. by the time you're done the game will be ready for you to play

They seem to favor the 360 just the way the way they go about saying things such as their last comment "While we're 'on topic', it's also being reported that (in Japan) the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4 is outselling the 360 game 5-1. 20 minute wait? And they are complaining? It's a freaking ONE-TIME install! If it took 2 hours then yeah, complain. But 20 minutes? Here's an idea:

-- Buy DMC4 for the PS3.

-- When you get home, put the disk in your PS3 and start downloading the installation file to your hard drive.

-- Next, grab your favorite game magazine and head for the bathroom and take a dump. When you are done with your number 2, you may have a few extra chocolate chips stuck in your butt crack... so it would be a good time for a quick shower.

-- Take your shower, dry off. Throw on some shorts.

-- Voila! The file downloaded and you didn't even notice. Now have some fun hackin' and slashin'

Capcom had planned on making a mandatory install on the 360 version as well, but that would have alienated the core users... so they decided against it. CVG, this is the worst flamebait article I've seen from you guys yet.

I really hope this does not become a trend... I know many people in this site will not agree (Most are Playstation fans to the death when you see the disagree vs agree against some comments)... but one of the biggest benefits of console games over PC games was always the ability to just insert the game in the console and play... simple as that... though PC was always more powerful and games probably looked better... developers optimized console games to keep this console advantage. What's next for consoles once the next xbox comes with a built in hard drive? All games will require installation? Should we need external hard drives? Imagine those PS3 owners that own a 20GB SKU... people that know nothing now need to learn how to swap hard drives or pay someon to do it for them in order to play nmore than 4 games if they all start requiring at least 5GB of hard drive space?

And it's not about the 20 Minutes.. or only the 5GB... but where does it stop? There are other games more complex than this game... and there are other methods like stream loading or code and textures optimization that developers always had to do to make things happen... but now that Disc holds more data and a hard drive is available.. why bother doing that.. instead of taking the lazy route?

If this trend continue... even the next PSP or DS will require game installation... PC all over again... and if things go through with the One console world... and companies like microsoft, Sony and Nintendo do not subsidize the cost of the hardware and people do... ala PC... what will be the benefit of having a console over a PC?

20 mins is nothing if it means faster loading times when going into new areas, as well as a flawless framerate.

the downside to blueray, as the disc spins slower it would take age to load games. Its like having a sinclair zx spectrum and it takes up 5gb on the hard drive. thats bad.
And apparently they haven't even started to maximize the power of the ps3. Whats the point of having a 50gb disc when you have to off load data onto the hard drive when you get a new game. Why can't it do it on the fly if its so god dam fast?.

Any way you cut it, PS3 gamers are going to have to wait to play their games. Either it's a multiplatform game, that shows up 3-6 months after the 360 version, or a 20 minute wait after you buy it, because Blu-Ray is for MOVIES, not GAMES. Game installation is for the rapidly-dying PC market...NOT consoles. :o
Maybe Capcom thought they would win back some of the PS3 fans...whom they'd dissed so badly,by dropping the PS3 exclusivity...by shaving mere seconds off of load times. But I seriously doubt anyone would give a crap if the PS3 and 360 versions loaded the same, considering they're identical in every other way.

I guess some of these consoles realy are PC's when it comes to installing data onto the HD. The PS3's 80gb would be 50-60gb, just by installing data for 10 games. "Blu-Ray is needed for games" apprantly so is a hard drive and that goes for the 360 aswell. Wow! and I thought juggling 20gb was bad before I got my 120. Terabyte anyone? Well atleast it helps in cutting down on loading times, a little.

you only install once right. clutch much. whats the big deal. my only gripe is that you cant install in the background and thats it. Having a standard hdd should not be seen or portrayed as some type of disadvantage because it clearly isn't. And to bladestar, who on one side will love the 360 for being so similar to the pc but worried about the ps3 for having similar features, you're shows how out of touch he is with the current gen on this instance. Maybe we should of stuck with cartridges. hdd's have made games better on the ps3 and will do so on the 360 when MS finally opens the door to devs to create games that need the hdd. Lets not get too caught up about DMC4 itself, think about the trend of next gen games that may be held back because of the non use of the hdd. plus all I hear from most on n4g is that nobody owns the hdd'less core anyway

This does not bother me really you can just go off and do something while the game installs. I expect the same situation with the Playstation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV considering how big the game will be with no loading times. It has been said that Grand Theft Auto IV would have a lengthly loading process (same with the XBOX 360 version as well I bet).

if you play pc games then it's really not a big deal! gears of war takes about 30-45 minutes to install on pc so there's really not a big deal dealing with it on PS3...........

I thought it was an option to install it if you want, but you have to install it that kinda sucks. 20 min not a big deal for shorter load times but the loads arnt very long to begin with probaly. I dont have ps3 but this would piss me off as I would rather not install it and wait 3 seconds longer on a 7 second load.

you who are reading it is. I know that it aint a big deal but this is pretty lame that they force you to instal a console game under the guise "it makes loads shorter." Yeah it may do that but they wouldent require it if it didnt need it. Is it required or is it an option? If its an option then it isnt a biggie, but to make you install a game on a console@#@$!? That would be whack, no matter what you all might say. Its supposed to be a console no a PC. The load times are probally too long on both versions, cause it looked like a high def last gen game to me when I played the demo.

Why this is needed on the ps3 if it doesnt improve the load times by much(one or 2 seconds thats what were talking about and no where does it say that it eliminates them like you would expect by having it installed). On the other hand I dont see such a big deal about 20 min install time what would get me is the 5 gig take up space.

On second thought 5GB is a lot actually to install one game. I have the 60GB Playstation 3 but that will still take up a lot of memory. I tend to delete any demos when I am done with them anyway because they can take up space quickly and I see no reason to save lot's of trailers and such on the hardrive when you can easily view them on the internet.

It seems this is the alternative to what Bethesda did when they put Oblivion out on the PS3. I guess you can either store stuff on the hard drive or you can put multiple copies of the textures on the disc.

So that means when I leave work that I start my car with my spare keys instead of the one on my key ring, get home, run in the house, start the game installing, run out and hop back in my car, and drive down the street to BK for some snackage, flirt with the cashier a bit(The BK where I live is 24/7 and this will at 1:00-1:30 a.m.), then creep back home(all while singing Superstition by Stevie Wonder), and enjoy the pwnage that is Devil May Cry 4. Since this may take more than 22 minutes the game may already be installed by the time I get back home. Go fig!

But if I had the choice, I'd have bypassed that install, at least for my first play of the game. Maybe get through the first level or so, then when I was ready to take a break, I'd let it install all it wants. But I hate taking up hDD space. But hey, if Capcom needed to do this to make sure that the Devil May Cry 4 experience for the PS3 would be a great one, then the more power to them. Both versions will be great, so there isn't much to complain about in the end.

I agree with some of the points raised here. When i first bought a console it was a joy compared to the PC, no upgrades, no ram issues ect. No fiddling with Autoexec.bat or Config.sys file optimizing, min max setting for ur graphics snd ect. You jus bought and played.

I bought my PS3 a mnth ago and 1 of the first things i noticed was the dld of demos and install feature, which i found irritating to start of with. I have got used to it, i dont like it but i got used to it. Wot im not liking is the upgrade thing.

Upgrading is wot u do on a PC, if, like others have said, its going to be a 5-10gig install on future games then im goin to struggle for space. I absolutely refuse to upgrade a console, and that goes for my 360. Ive managed with my 20gig hdd on my 360 for 2yrs, and i like replaying certain games, boxing, beat-em-ups, racers or 1s i didnt finish not to mention the games i keep solely for multiplay. This will not be poss if this trend continues and goes to the 360.

If this is the case then both Sony and MS r turning the console into a PC and using there systems as the 1 stop for ur media content. Sony alrdy incorporates a browser into there PS3. In future if u want certain things u will need to upgrade to get them. Bigger hard drive to play more games snds like the start of it to me.

This was Capcoms choice, and it has nothing to do with PS3 hardware. As usual, people without PS3's care more about this than PS3 owners.

I'm not bothered about a 20 minute install but it should be optional and it should eliminate loading times, knocking a couple of seconds off a 7 second loading time is worthless. I like a lot of people am concerned that consoles are going down the PC route, 5gb might not be much for some people but if you've got a 20gb PS3, then that's 25%. Add this to the £10 more for PS3 game in Europe and i'm thinking i would've been better off ordering it on the 360.

Uncharted has no load times the entire game and you never have to install anything. =/

Install 20 minutes for PS3 for a little faster loading times during the rest of the game, seems like waiting 20 minute only one time is not bad at all, dont know how sensible this guy is if he would cry over something like this, and the xbox version doesnt do the 20 minute initial installation and takes a couple of seconds more during gameplay, no big problem with that either. Well, at least you won't be staring at a blank screen while installing if that is any consolation. You get a 22 minute history of DMC which isn't that bad. A decent refresher.

I do not have a ps3 yet. I will get one when tax $$ comes in. I am curious as to if all ps3 games require some form of installation to the hdd? Why would a multi game like DMC4 be subjected to installation where as the dvd version on the 360 doesnt? Is it have to do with the (rumored) slow read time on the bluray drive? Would it be different if the game were on a dvd for ps3 instead of bluray?

Are load times affected because of this and has someone confirmed if the same section of the game loads longer on the 360 than the ps3? It is my assumption that not every game for ps3 takes full advantage of the capacity of the bluray format (multi plat games for example)so why do all games come on the format? Sony should have dvd games where applicable if it makes loading easier. Just a thought.

Its only an attempt to help Xbox owners feel better about owning that machine.

This is even more proof that blu-ray was not put in the ps3 because of gaming. They tell everyone that the extra disc space is needed for gaming. Then they put a BD drive in the ps3 that is too slow to run a game, without having to be installed to the ps3's HDD.

If anyone has been actually following up on this, the developers of DMC said both 360 and PS3 were suppose to have the same install process but couldn't do it with the 360 because of people owning the Core console (which you know has no hard drive). Obviously, the developers knew what they were doing when they added this installation process in. It's not just to mess with the 360/PS3 fanboys.

I don't care about 5 gigs I have 250 gig hd for mine anyway and with all those UT3 mods I needed it badly.Hell ya installing does make a diffrence look at Folklore and Ninja Gaiden.

...that a one time 20 minute wait is not even worth complaining about (though if it happened everytime you put in the game it would be inexcusable), its surely avoidable at this point. Games like Uncharted have proven that to me in spades. Uncharted has NO install, a 15 second loading time at the beginning of a session, and then not one single loading time for the rest of the game. i find it hard to believe that there is SOOOO much more going on in DMC4 that it warrants a 5gb install. Naughty Dog obviously has an intimacy with the PS3 that Capcom (and almost every other developer, save Insomniac, and Infinity Ward) hasn't had time to cultivate. Developers will eventually learn little tricks to make thing like load times and installs occur with less and less inteference to your gaming experience.

Cos in PS3 version, there is practically no-load time.

Everyone knew BD-ROM was much slower than DVD-ROM, that's why you even have the options to install games on the PS3, and that's why Sony really pushed for decent sized hard drives.

Another reason why a DVD-ROM would have been a better choice, but I guess you can't argue that if you enjoy the BluRay movies.

If your hard drive is crammed with movies and music; and you don't have enough space to install the game you can't play DMC4.

Can you imaging wanting to replay the game sometime again down the road and having to wait 20 mins again just to start the game.

Just like 360 owners, PS3 owners don't have to install anything and go through with 6~7 second load times. If they want near instantaneous loading though, there's nothing wrong with having that option.

why is this a big deal? i dont get it... id give 20 minutes (im sure it doesnt take that long) up front for no loading times later

Because in Twenty Two minutes you could easily make a sandwich, call a loved one, socialize, read N4G, go to 7-11...

Those 22 minutes will pass quite easily, where as waiting 8 seconds to enter a room kinda sucks.

Disc speed is only one factor in videogame loading times; the other factors are how efficiently the code is written, as well as how much of the hardware is being utilized to process that code.

For example, 360 code runs horrifically slow on Cell because it's entirely PowerPC-based, which means only one PowerPC core in Cell is being utilized, and also does about twice the work that Cell needs to do to load the same data since the SPUs have their own Local Storage. Cell actually loads and processes data off a disc or hard drive much faster than traditional processers, but only if the code is written specifically for Cell's SPUs.

This is the reason so many PS3 exclusives have high visual fidelity, as well as almost nonexistent loading times; the SPUs are simply being put to good use. Again, depends on the developer's experience. You'll either get 45 second load times (Motorstorm) or no loading at all (Uncharted). Expect loading times to continue to decrease on the PS3 though since so much technology is being shared across 1st party devs for that platform.

It doesn't mention it shows you the entire backstory of the DMC games during the install process. Nothing big but still something to pass the time if you need a refresher or are a newcomer and wanna know what is going on storywise.

Only a wuss would cry. Ive installed plenty of games on PC that take longer then DMC4 on ps3. Shoot ive had patches that took an hour.

To be honest I like the idea of having faster load times and smooth tex and all that fun stuff I just dont see saving 4-5 seconds that much of a great thing. if it was like a 15 second thing then ok but 5 seconds is nothing.

Why no reviewer ever speaks of the great ability ps3 has in -almost- every game? Uncompressed audio, which adds a lot on the final score in my opinion.

#1 You HAVE to preload the game, this IS NOT an option. #2 There is STILL loading time in the game, preinstalling does not take away the loading only makes it a little faster.

Actually this is totally wrong. The limiting factor in loading anything from storage media is the media itself, unless the CPU is way, WAY slower than a modern processor. Any modern processor is going to be sitting there tapping its foot waiting for hard drive data...hard drives are *extremely slow* compared to how fast CPUs can process data.

The limiting factor in a PS3 loading scheme is the hard drive speed and how the developer programs their game to load, *NOT* the speed of the Cell architecture.

thats ok though because im sure the ps3 kids already decided that the game sucks right? just like turok? any game that's worse on ps3 turns out to suck? right?
