Developer: Wii U is not about the specs

Third party Wii U developer says that the Nintendo Wii U isn't about specs, but about innovation.

Really, the typical gamer isn't going to care for statements like this. They have their minds made up - if the specs aren't the latest or greatest they're not going to buy it.

Essentially, they already have their minds made up. They can't see the value or appeal in a different control method, they just want eye-bleeding technology.

PirateThom5061d ago

Is it really a different control method though?

Specs aside, there's a device that already does what the Wii U does and it's one Nintendo made themselves. It's called the DS.

Top screen is your TV
Touch screen is the control pad.

A few extra buttons, new options for online but essentially something that Nintendo already did. It's reinventing the wheel (and it's the third iteration of the idea that has two control sticks!) It's neither bleeding edge nor truly innovative so I'm struggling to see, outside of Nintendo faithful, who is this aimed at?

PopRocks3595061d ago

The feature I like best in particular is playing games on the controller screen. That's something I could have used back when I was a kid and I shared my TV with the folks.

As for today, being able to just lay down and play a game like a handheld is brilliant in my opinion. The Wii U also has access to Netflix, YouTube and whatnot. As someone who really enjoys Nintendo games, this is a brilliant console for me.

As for the masses, well who knows. Perhaps somewhere down the line it will get some nice killer apps.

PirateThom5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

To the people disagreeing, do you have a counterarguement? I'd be interested to hear your view of this.

@PopRocks359

I only have one issue with that, I have an HDTV... I have no reason to transfer video from my 42" 1080p capable TV to a 16.2" screen. However, I do see the appeal and how some people will get use out of this.

PimpDaddy5061d ago

I didn't hit disagree Pirate Thom. But you just described why the PS Vita isn't selling with your analogy of the DS and Wii U.

Also the Nintendo faithful have purchased almost 100 million Wii's. So although the majority of N4G think the Wii U will flop. I wouldn't be surprised to see it be a success. Especially seeing as how Nintendo seem to have mastered making their console both attractive and accessible to the masses.

meganick5060d ago

You're right that it's similar to the DS, but the fact that the Wii U controller's screen isn't in a fixed position opens up gameplay options not possible on the DS. You can see examples in some of the Wii U tech demos and games.

"they just want eye-bleeding technology"

Well it is a next gen console, not an add on

Thats why people get excited for a new gen, better specs = better games.

The fact they keep focusing on the controler is really off putting. I mean it's supposed to come out in a few months and we hardly know anything about it. How can we get hyped into the start of "next gen" when they havent given us a reason to. I mean I like the games coming out...Rayman Legends or Zombi U for example but I just want to know what this machine can do if they want me to pay for it. This isn't the Wii they can't wave some fancy new way for me to play in my face and expect me to buy it like that.

Carl_Shocker5061d ago

You guys can disagree all you want but you know I'm right, it's only because most of you see any criticism towards Nintendo as people "hating" on them when it isn't...sorry but I'm not really arsed absout all that fanboy stuff the fact is better tec is what makes us the most excited for a new gen and what makes us look forward to it.

Remember when we saw the leap last gen...what the 360/PS3 could do, it was amazing at the time and it's what hyped us up the most when we came to the start of this gen.

Freakazoid20125060d ago

You want to know what it can do before you buy it? As in graphics right? So I'm guessing you are a casual gamer and are just now buying a current gen console because neither the PS3 or 360 had games that showcased what they could really do til years later.

Last gen we went from SD to HD. We arent going to get that same jump this gen and anyone looking for that is in all honesty a fool.

What I remember most about this gen is crappy ports that do not compare to the games we have today. In no way was the full power of the PS3 or 360 shown in those early games.

Gr815061d ago

Argue that the gamers actually wanting bleeding edge tech are a minority. Those that have made up their minds on yet to be released consoles seems bizarre.

This dev seems to have voiced my exact sentiments however. And I'm rather surprised how this 'spec' talk has gone viral. I personally feel it's just fanboys trying to knock a Nintendo system.

Console gaming has always just been about the software, nothing else. The most powerful consoles have always ended up dead last.

PopRocks3595061d ago

Any gamer who is only interested in graphics should just convert completely to PC gaming. I hardly feel that way about games. I love consoles and I only occasionally invest in PC games that are on Steam and it's usually because they're cheap, not because I expect them to look better.

Your statement about consoles being solely about software is dead on. When you buy a console, it's instantly obsolete. A PC can (and probably should) be upgraded.

The Wii and PS3 were released within two days of each other. The PS3 was boasting "the cell" and was supposed to be this ultra powerful machine that did everything. The Wii was an otherwise underpowered machine that sported a new control style that no one had ever seen conventionally before. The Wii wound up selling out for months and the PS3 initially struggled.

zebramocha5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

@pop the wii was successful because of the low asking price couple with a some what new control scheme, the cause of the ps3 struggling was mostly the high price tag.

Gr815061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

History at its finest. Wii Sold not too to a gimmick or price. But accessibility and broad appealing software any one could understand due to the simplicity of the WiiMote. Remember Wii's being soldout and being sold on Ebay for more $ than the price of a PS3?!

The PS3's price was a barrier, sure, but what launch game did PS3 have? Resistance I think and Heavenly Sword? Consumers didn't think those kinds of games were worth the price of admission.

Wii sold 100m units, and software sales put the other consoles to shame, this gen. It struck a chord with the mainstream, Nintendo went back to their NES roots (for a time) and it paid off big time. Marginalize it all you want to, it might not have appealed to you, but forum dwellers must recognize that they also are the minority of gamers and in no way speak for the mainstream..at all.

Ck1x5061d ago

Shok, alot of people want this eye-bleeding technology but at a budget as well which makes absolutely no sense to a true techie... Can we use the term ghetto fabulous for the average gamer today? I don't know what else to call it, when people want something that they really can't afford! Lol

madjedi5061d ago

@pimp Yeah if the 100 million wii owners were nintendo faithful, then mario, metroid and zelda would have sold alot more copies. 15-25 million faithful, the rest is a mixture of multiconsoles owners and a ton of non gamers.

Actually shok if we wanted the latest and greatest, we would build a pc, since will still roast the next gens. So nice spin attempt, but no cigar.

"They can't see the value or appeal in a different control method, they just want eye-bleeding technology."

Yeah sorry some of us aren't impressed by a innovative idea like a map screen, an inventory screen. Or some other stupid gimmick when menu screen still works perfectly fine on standard controllers.

Value or appeal is subjective to the user, you never disagreed with anothers opinion on a game.

Problem is with all the spinning and downplaying articles and nintendo fans about the console's specs, that screams not especially powerful or really next gen.

I love how after bragging about how powerful the wii u is to current gen consoles. Nintendo fans are switching back to it's really all about the gameplay mantra. And the rest of us who aren't interested in it are merely graphics whores.

And are not "true gamers" because we don't meet whatever bs criteria said elitist dictates, yeah whatever.

Sorry innovation is a useless buzzword a majority of the time, idiots scream about a lack of innovation in games without explaining what needs to innovated or why it should change.

All nintendo had to do to shut any doubters up, is show a actual next gen mario, zelda or metroid, star fox ect at e3 this year and wow people. They didn't so you have people who feel that nintendo burned them with the wii and these same are heavily skeptical about the wii u.

But look on the bright side, in 2-4 months poprocks and the rest of the fanatical pro nintendo squad, can be safely chatting in nintendoland.

Where you can rest assured, nintendo will always be worshipped as the best developer ever and everything nintendo does is always unique and/or innovative. In other words a boring, group hug session where others won't call you out for being full of bs.

I only wish it was releasing sooner.

"The Wii U also has access to Netflix, YouTube and whatnot." So old features from this gen are noteworthy, fascinating.

stuna15060d ago

That my fine sir is it in a nutshell!

Nintendo themselves should be held to the same standards as everyone else.

I want all 3 consoles to have different sets of specs and technologies built in. Sorry to say but the Xbox and ps3 did exactly the same things just with different styles.

CGI-Quality5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

Not really. Just many sought to throw them in the same category because of their similarities in libraries. Outside of that, the PS3 and 360 are quite different and are at odds with many of their offerings.

OT: I'm curious about what Nintendo has packed in this thing, but either way, I will eventually want one for ZombiU alone. The game is shaping up very nicely!

CGI-Quality5060d ago

Shame you get so many disagrees for telling the truth on N4G. Oh well.

linkratos5060d ago

The reason you're getting disagrees is that they are basically the same console. 95% of the libraries and the games people play on them are identical. They both have solid online and play DVDs. The controllers have essentially the same layouts. They are almost an identical experience. That's not always how videogames have been, last gen kind of kicked off the trend of homogenous consoles.

ThePsychoGamer5061d ago

Really? That's not what Nintendo was saying back in 2010, seemed like they really wanted to focuses on the specs (or at least the fact that it allegedly had 50% more power then the PS3). Though they have sense backed down from these claims, one's got to wonder with the lack of information, what douse Nintendo not want us to know?

Dreamer095061d ago

Kinda guessed that...
Nintendo in their own generation and proud.

And the still manage to outsell everything else....

BrianC62345061d ago

Only people who are fooled by gimmicks buy Nintendo consoles now. Or if you like buyin the same few Nintendo games every couple years.

Gr815061d ago

But just answer me this.."buying the same few Nintendo games every couple of years" can't you just interchange any company name and get the same conclusion?

"Just buy the same few Sony games every couple of years"

"Just buy the same few M$ games every couple of years"

If you try to come up with some lame reason why you can't say this, then I'd assume you fall under that all encompassing adjective of 'fanboy' or as I like to call them, blind supporters.

JonathanG5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

You just never learn do you Brian?
Not everyone has to think the PS3 is the best video game console ever. Can't you for once quit complaining and post a positive comment?
It would be better that way.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS100d ago (Edited 100d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer126d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot126d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno126d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay126d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno124d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK125d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
