XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Preview [GamingLives]

GamingLives gets some serious hands-on time with Firaxis' upcoming reboot of the much-loved turn-based strategy title at this year's Gamescom.

"Firaxis have done an incredible job and, while I can’t imagine their take on Enemy Unknown will ever knock the original off the top spot of my all-time favourite games, there’s every chance that they may end up sitting alongside each other, looking down on the rest of my gaming memories with a smug sense of accomplishment."

Nice read, and awesome trailer.

I love the turn based genre, but I am so impressed at how much the action looks like real time. Imo the only way to possibly improve upon the original X-Com was updating the graphics. I really cannot say enough about the new look. It's truly gorgeous. I know that I don't speak for everyone, but this remains my most anticipated game of 2012.

You are not alone my friend. It is my most anticipated game as well. If I could only buy one game then this would be it.

Totally agree. Every time anyone ever asked which game I'd most like to have remade, it was always Enemy Unknown... but when they asked what I would change, the answer was always nothing in terms of gameplay, but bring the graphics up to modern day without losing the feel of the original.

Whenever someone released a spin on it, or a complete reboot, it always fell short and I was never satisfied. It's why I was so hot/cold with the Firaxis one, until finally getting hands-on and realising that they really did do it justice. It's not a straight reboot though, as there's a sense of evolution in it too.

Borderlands 2 WAS my most-anticipated game of 2012 until Gamescom. Can't wait.

"It's not a straight reboot though, as there's a sense of evolution in it too." - Totally agree. You succinctly summarized exactly why I'm so excited for Xcom: Enemy Unknown.

You can really tell the developers have a love of the original and respect the things that made it great.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
