GameInformer- Turn-based battle systems are like cherished childhood toys. We had a blast together in games like Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star, creating unforgettable memories. Then something happened: New toys entered the picture, flashier and more advanced. I couldn’t ignore them even if I tried – the lure of something modern was too great. But the oldest toys are the most comfortable, and that is exactly what draws me to traditional battle systems.
Let’s explore games that tweak traditional battle systems, what new franchises can learn from them, and discuss why this battle system still works.

Kazuyuki Shindo, who worked on games including Legend of Mana, Final Fantasy XIII, and SaGa: Emerald Beyond, has left Square Enix.

The Nerd Stash: “The letter scene in Grandia is a magnificent, layered early example of the game's wonderful NPC interactions, and a real tear-jerker.”

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.
So let me get this straight you include FF13-2s crappy battle system which is nothing like a Traditional JRPG Battle System yet you leave out the classic turn based system that was in Lost Odyssey...
Hmmm...
The general, relevant, counterpoint is that traditional turn based games were never given a proper chance on current consoles. That if anything was done with the mechanic, like with Resonance of Fate or Valkyria Chronicles, it was quickly written off.
With it still existing on handhelds - for now anyway, given that the Vita's setup may be an poison to it - there's no real point in bring it up.
Not very traditional
The Last Story has one of the best battle systems in a jrpg imo. Fast paced, tons of action, and it still allows strategy and controlling uber powerfull attcks of your teammates. Really glad Mistwalker tried something new, modern, and innovative. Plays like FF, Mass Effect, and Diablo all thrown together. Loved it.
Resonace of Fate also had one of my favorite non traditional battle systems. Really hard to explain but damn was it addictive, strategic, fun, and hard as hell at points. Very cinematic also.
I still love straight up traditional also. Replaying Lost Odyssey is like meeting up with an old girlfriend you havent seen in years. Feels right and you wonder why you left in the first place. It allows a cinematic quality real time cant for the most part and i like having time to think. I detest random encounters though. It bugs me when im trying to figure out a puzzle or find an item and i have to refight 10 damn battles that take forever. I guess i really love all rpgs. Keep em coming.
