Vita Firmware Update Locks Memory Cards

A poster at popular internet discussion forum NeoGAF has unearthed some news that Vita owners might find somewhat troublesome. The newest firmware update puts the system’s memory cards under even more strict lock and key.

So they're trying to stop people from sharing downloaded games... right? I can see that, but totally locking them basically to one device? Sounds like a jerk move to me.

knifefight5009d ago

Yeah. It's a change that won't impact everyone, but there are a lot of people out there who like to browse the different things on the different PSN stores. This makes another memory card pretty much a requirement for doing that.

GribbleGrunger5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

If you wanted multiple accounts you had to have different memory cards anyway, so this is nothing. If people are going to complain that they can't browse another region but never had any intention of ever downloading games from there, then it's a pretty pathetic thing to moan about

We just got an incredible update and guess what articles we'll be getting over the next few weeks. Gamers sicken me

gaffyh5009d ago

I actually already thought this was the case, because it's not exactly easy to switch accounts on PS Vita. It's not a big problem for me, but I would have liked a multiple sign-in option like on PS3.

Redempteur5009d ago

@GribbleGrunger
Actually you could change regions without having multiples memory cards .'ive done it many times

BrutallyBlunt5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

"We just got an incredible update and guess what articles we'll be getting over the next few weeks. Gamers sicken me "

This is what i've been saying before, forums seem to gather the most pessimistic and negative people out there. You can have a list of features and if 10 are good and 1 is bad you will see certain people flock to that one negative while ignoring the 10 positive features. Same thing within the comment sections. 10 people will say nice things and 1 person will have something bad to say and often most replies will be centered around that one negative comment. Which of course gives the negative person more attention, and with attention becomes power to them. Even reviews are not immune. If most reviews are posiitive and a few aren't it seems like the negative reviews get more attention. Even within a positive review if they made a comment that is negative people focus on that more. Why is that?

My feeling is there's a group out there that feeds off of negativity and are likey to overshadow everyone else. They seem to be more determined. Another reason could be it's more likely somone will go out of their way to give negative feedback on something rather than positive feedback. How many times have people played online and left negative feedback but never leave positive feedback?

As for the memory cards i can understand why Sony took this approach. It's the same thing with ITunes, you can't buy from other regions with your account. Publishers like to control their content and games/music/video may have different release dates and content in various regions. This makes things rather difficult in this day and age because consumers are more aware of what's going on since we are all connected online now. We also live in an era of self-titlement where we think there should be no boundaries or control. So the focus can't all be towards Sony because often time it's the publishers that want these barricades put in place.

dbjj120885009d ago

I thought that was already the case with the Vita.

AsheXII5009d ago

@GribbleGrunger

No we didn't, i had only 1 memory card with games from both accounts and it worked fine, you just had to choose the option not to reset memory card and just reset the Ps Vita.

Is sony trying to kill the vita itself?

Overpriced memoery cards now this?

Gish5009d ago

Please take the Ga. off the front of your name. You are giving us Georgia people a bad stereotype with your spelling.

CommonSense5008d ago

He misspelled one word. I've lived in GA, I'd say he's above the avg. And, if he has all his teeth, he's way ahead of the curve.

So many tears over a closed platform being a closed platform.

Go build a PC, hack a PSP/DS, and shuuuuuuut uuuuuuuup.

Om3ga3705009d ago

We just need:

Final Fantasy X HD
Killzone: Mercenary
Bioshock Vita
Little Big Planet Vita
Persona 4: The Golden Edition
Playstation All-stars Battle Royale
Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified

And we'll all be fine. Perseverance people! If the 3DS did it, so can the Vita!

Bowzabub5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

So if I want to sign into another account just pop the memory card out and pop in another right? And the problem is? Oh right.. Less thievery. Tragic! If Sony was smart they would put the Playstation Home app on the Vita because I'm willing to bet they will buy it right up. No reason why they can't either, the lowest cache is 3 gigs.. Boom.. Even 4 gigers can play.

knifefight5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

If by "less thievery" you mean "less money from people buying things off of multiple PSN stores," then yeah I guess. A lot of people buy content from all over the world. Check the source of the info.:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Maybe it's not YOUR lifestyle to do so, but that doesn't make someone else's life any less legitimate. It might not have an impact on YOU, but it has an impact on a LOT of people who are legitimately using Sony's services and PAYing for it all the while. =/

Edit: Trying to bullshit? Come on, man, be real here.
Forcing people interesting in *paying* to download more content into *also* paying for a second memory card is the bullshit, many would say. ;)

Before, a single memory card would do the job, but now, one needs two in order to do the same thing. The impact here is on legitimate consumers.

Bowzabub5009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

Then you would legitimately put another card in. Might not be your lifestyle but it is for a lot of people. These things are happening because people have taken advantage of legitimate consumers perks.. You and I both know this, who you trying to bullsh!t? Look, I agree it sucks but people (I use this term loosely) have ruined for others. The only reason that the PSP outsells a device 3 times better than it is because it has had the dogsh!t haxxoredlolololoo out of it.

hkgamer5009d ago

Depends what you class as "legitimately" using a service.
I'm pretty sure Sony just want one PSN ID per user. If you have multiple accounts for multiple countries, then I am not even sure if that is properly allowed. I mean my US account is definitely not legit, my address is in a McDonald's.
Most people abuse the use of PSN accounts from other countries because exchange rates and game prices are normally cheaper in US. There is probably less than 0.01% of users who have a proper legitimate reason for having multiple accounts.

ThanatosDMC5009d ago

Is it that hard to just put another memory card in?

knifefight5008d ago

The harder part is having to BUY another one ;)

Maybe you can afford it easily and that's great, but not everyone has access to the amount of disposable income that you do. =/

PJF_Josh5007d ago

"The harder part is having to BUY another one ;)

If you've got the money to be buying content from all over the world then you can probably hold off on a couple of purchases to buy a new memory card. Just sayin'

ooquis5009d ago

And i can't download Youtube Vids to my vita anymore...wtf is up with that.

Bowzabub5009d ago

Use the YouTube app and hope for HTML5. Did you really think that loader was going to work forever? XD

trickman8885009d ago

"Hope for HTML5"? Sure, It'll come "soooon"

PS The Vita YT app is horrible.

dbjj120885009d ago

Youtube on Vita was terrible to begin with.

ThanatosDMC5009d ago

Just use the youtube app. It runs fine. My only gripe is to login we have to use the crappy browser.

r215009d ago

Well that sucks for multiple card owners. I currently have one 4Gig Mem Card and WAS going to buy another for my US account but screw that! I really hope with the next updates, the Singapore will be as good the US :C

Hicken5009d ago

But I just bought another 8GB card tonight, and both of them work fine for my one account.

Edward755009d ago (Edited 5009d ago )

Hicken, there has to be a reason you whole heartedly agree, or are 100% ok with everything Sony does.

Oh, I wish you could respond to this for everyone to see..

And as for me, I am against Sony for all the money making choices that are bad for them as a company, not just gaming. Money is being lost!

These memory cards are now bad for casual gamers (price compared to other storage). And now hardcore players who use the vita in a little different way then the mainstream.

Sad... I think that vita now can only hope to break even.... And that is the truth.

ThanatosDMC5009d ago

^Enlighten us how hardcore players use their Vita

can't play the game, gives me motion sickness.. .I have the same problem with all first person shooters though

Silly Mammo4019d ago

I had to sell Dying Light because of motion sickness and I really liked the game.

Eidolon4019d ago (Edited 4019d ago )

You need to play more first person games, it's the only cure.

Is that a permanent condition, could it be managed by special eye-wear or pills?

rdgneoz34019d ago

I play a ton of FP games, yet after a while of this one I get a little motion sickness. Loved Dying Light though (played the hell out of it in co-op), so it might just be the screen being bright white half the time (when you aren't painting it black).

Becuzisaid4019d ago (Edited 4019d ago )

Absolutely phenomenal game. Short and sweet. At first the paint mechanic had me worried it would get old fast, but then it got to the vines and I was so impressed.

Eidolon4019d ago

Same, by all the trailers I thought it was just going to be throwing paint on white, but the vines really got me and it's so beautiful.

teflontactics4018d ago

I've just finished this on Vita, and though I enjoyed a lot of the systems and little things you had to figure out along the way, it seemed like it either ran too long or (on the flip side) didn't have enough elements to keep me from getting bored between the introduction of new mechanics.

I'd have probably given it a 7-7.5, but that's just me.

Almost over a decade later ..

At the very least, it is now done..

Up next..

Let people change names, and region.

These features will probably not see the light of day till PS5.

JimmyHACK4111d ago

HAHA!! I just knew the first comment would be complaining about name changing.

StormLegend4111d ago

I would love to change my name, but that's meh to me. I'm alright with what I picked. You guys should be the same. I don't want everyone on my friends list changing their names.

Joda4110d ago

You damn straight it is. $50 a year and I can't even do something simple like change my gamer Id?? It's bad enough watching an enemy die before the bullet hits them in the ps versions of call of duty but I can't change my damn name!?! That's just plain dumb.

Even steam can change it........REPETEDLY, and they're a free service. Xbox charges but hey sony could to. I just don't understand the reasoning. So primitive. Stuff like that make me avoid psn. I have 21 platinums sony but I wanna change my name sushi yoshida! Lay off a couple of free indies and give me at least ONE name change, and not that Facebookcrap.

DanielGearSolid4111d ago

You have to chill!

We're making progress!

MegaRay4111d ago

I dont think it would be PS5 in 2025. More like PS6 or PS now right now

Christopher4111d ago

Only 8 years since inception, but, yeah, very long overdue.

I'm not sure they'll ever do name changes. I think that's why they implemented the "real name" feature on PS4. I think it's too much of a security risk for them that they don't want to manage the possibility of someone hacking and changing someone's name, let alone other information, and then deal with someone trying to get the account back.

ipach4111d ago

has that an issue on Steam and XBL?

Christopher4111d ago

@ipach: I know, but I'm just trying to think of it from Sony's perspective. I don't agree with it, but I think they're more concerned with doing it and then dealing with any issues like that happening. There could be some old technology issue, but I can't think of it. I'm just not sure. But, if it hasn't happened yet, I'm not sure it ever will.

ifistbrowni4110d ago

Wait, wha...?

You think its less of a security risk to reveal you full name to online strangers than to change an online gamertag?

Your PSN_ID has nothing to do with logging in. When you log into the PSN anywhere (website, vita, ps3, ps4) it never asks for your psn_ID. It asks for your email and password.

So, if someone hijacked your account, changing your PSN_ID wouldn't do anything. Your account would still be attached to your email/password until the "hacker" changed that information.

So, yeah. That's no defense to why Sony shouldn't implement name changes.

Christopher4110d ago

***You think its less of a security risk to reveal you full name to online strangers than to change an online gamertag?
***

Considering it's a secondary attribute and you control who sees it, yes.

Though, nowhere did I say anything about that being secure or not. I said it was an option that showed a sign that they weren't going allow name changes anytime soon.

***Your PSN_ID has nothing to do with logging in.***

Knowing which count to access when your account has been hacked and the e-mail changed does make your PSN_ID a valuable tool to track. It prevents your account from being completely wiped and you unable to determine what happened to it at all. Since e-mail and passwords can change, the fact that PSN ID can't is the sole way that a person has to track what has happened to their account.

***So, if someone hijacked your account, changing your PSN_ID wouldn't do anything. ***

It would completely erase it from your ability to ever retrieve the account.

ZerobyZero4111d ago

Awesome I always wante to upgrade to master account.

IrisHeart4111d ago

I didn't even know there were sub accounts...

Palitera4111d ago

Can someone please explain what they are?

IrisHeart4111d ago

I think they are like parental controlled accounts?

GameSpawn4111d ago

Sub accounts are "child" accounts to the Master account. They share a wallet with the Master account and any and all purchases are shared between the Master account and all sub-accounts. The Master account has complete control over the wallet and can set spending limits or block spending altogether.

Sub-accounts that are elevated to Master accounts with this new program will retain any purchases that the sub-account had made, though they will loose access to all the shared purchases made by other sub-accounts and the master account (this makes sense as they didn't make those purchases and aren't entitled to keep them). The Master account also looses access to the elevated sub-account's purchases for the same reason.

ipach4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

they should've called them 'child accounts' in the first place. i mistakenly created a subaccount and used it primarily just thinking it was a way to make another PSN name. stupid me didn't realize i can't fund my wallet directly, can't use the share button properly, can't be real name friends with anyone... but alas, hope is in the air

ENSABAHNUR4111d ago

Damn I wish I knew about these sub accounts etc, it would've saved me from having 3 diff profiles ( due to various reasons).... Oh well I'ma stay where I'm at I guess... This all could've been avoided by letting us change user names but hey not everything is as we want... Back to playing games

ipach4111d ago

oh man, i thought the day would never come. FINALLY. today is a good day, friends. I think Sony should just start considering making February the official month of #Greatness or something... there is hope, people. The Order might actually be a good game! Bloodborne might restore the Japanese home console market. BobbyB00BC0CKs might finally get to change his PSN name. People sitting next to me on the plane might stop calling my Vita a gameboy. The Last Guardian. Anything is possible!!
