Graphics are NOT everything

Non Specific Action look at why 'photo-realistic' graphics will not improve games or their emotive connection with gamers.

good graphics + good gameplay > bad graphics + good gameplay

there doesn't have to be compromises

speaking in the same context, except in cinema, take, for example, `The Dark Knight`. Remember Harvey two-face? Graphics/CGI did wonders that face paint couldn't do so graphics do matter.

BiggCMan5007d ago

Exactly, there can be both if developers give it their best. Of course, in games that aren't supposed to look like real life, like most JRPG's, it's more about the art style and drawings. But in games that are trying to look like real life, Uncharted, GTA etc.. It doesn't hurt to get the best looking visuals as possible does it? Would Uncharted get the recognition it has gotten, if it looked like Tomb Raider from PS1?

I would also like to say that I play Skyrim on my computer, and the game has taken my breath away with the graphical mods. It HAS made the game better, because the immersiveness of all the mods makes me feel like i'm inside the game. When I go in the dungeon and see these amazing textures, or hear the added sounds from my mods, trying to sneak up on an enemy, it's incredible, and the graphics really do add to my experience. It's the same with GTA 4 iCEnhancer and Crysis mods as well.

Great gameplay >> great graphics + good gameplay

Although I agree...is it too much to ask for both?

PoSTedUP5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

this whole topic is too broad imo. but if i had to choose:

great story + character charisma/likability but with poor graphics and simply gameplay

are better than

great graphics and great gameplay but with poor story and douche bag characters.

Getowned5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

"great graphics and great gameplay but with poor story and douche bag characters."

XD like God of War, Kratos is a D-bag character, but he's a bad ass D-bag.

*saves old mans life*
Old man-"Oh thank you!!! I thought I was a goner for sure!!"
*takes the key to the door off the old man*
Kratos-"You are"
Old man-"wait what?!?!"
*throws old man off a clif*
Old man-"Douchhh BAGGGgggg!!"
Kratos-"HAH! he died,"
Zuse-"That wasn't vary paragon"
Kratos-"Renagade For Life!!!!"

true story^ ... more or less lmao

Summons755007d ago

You know why Pac-Man, Mario, Donkey Kong, Astroids, Centipede, all those classic games that without we wouldn't even have a gaming industry are still played today? Because the gameplay was great and timeless NOT because the graphics were Photorealistic. You know why they will still be played in another 50 years while a lot of today's games that try and push graphical boundaries will be forgotten? Because the gameplay was great. You don't need amazing graphics to have an amazing game that falls upon Gameplay then story.

Sure great graphics can really add to the game especially if the art team behind the game is great but it definitely isn't needed. People don't replay Final Fantasy 7 because of it's amazing graphics, they play because the gameplay is fun (story was terrible but gameplay was great). FF7 looks like crap but it's still a lot of people's favorite game.

NYC_Gamer5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Those games are fun but i wouldn't pay 40-60 bucks in this and age to play something that looks like classic Pacman...There's enough technology available for studios to offer graphics and gameplay...

matgrowcott5007d ago

Pac-Man, Mario, Donkey Kong, Asteroids and Centipede were all classics long before the graphics in them were dated. They're still played because they've always been played, let's not pretend that it has anything to do with the visual style.

Wave a magic wand, change the industry entirely so that those games were coming out as they were but now and nobody would touch them. Not because they were bad games or even because people expect a higher level of graphics today, but because Donkey Kong et al wouldn't have 30 years as some of the best known titles in the history of gaming.

bad graphics + good gameplay > good graphics + bad gameplay

There is no reason why studios shouldn't be able to produce nice graphics with solid gameplay

Godmars2905007d ago

The case in point, that FF13 took away basics like towns and had one of the most shallowest of stories, says otherwise.

NYC_Gamer5007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

That's SE fault but in no case does that prove studios can't offer nice graphics/story/gameplay/music all in one package......

TheOneWhoIsTornApart5003d ago

I agree. I t feels like lazyness. its nice to know that amazing graphics will be a guarantee for next gen games so there can be a bigger focus on story, gameplay, characters and everything else.

Axonometri5007d ago

"Video" "Game"
Two equal parts with a third sometimes forgotten but just as important "Audio." which is the same unfair treatment "Audio" received when "Tele" "Vision" reached a mainstream audience.

Poor "Audio" does so much work and never gets any attention.

Summons755007d ago

While I love a lot of video game music and I do agree with you, games don't need music to be good. You can mute your TV and the game will still play great even without the audio.

Though soundtracks can be beautiful made and I give a lot of respect to the composers for doing such a good job

Axonometri5007d ago

I was not implying "Music" nor just "Soundtrack" I was speaking in "Audio" general. All of the sound work that goes into a video game is crucial in many aspects. Not just the music or just the effects. In fact, without sound, we miss an entire stage of cues and immersion that, in my honest opinion, would make a lot of games too dull.

I think Audio in general is taken for granted.

Seventh_Blood_Reborn5007d ago

I totally agree, but as always happens just the fond people find out how sound is important.

In this industry -for the Gamers- the problem is always the same: tastes imposed on the masses by the "culture" and the power of advertising, the casual gaming and the fear to try something new = superficiality.

akiraburn5007d ago

Hey man, I know exactly how it is. I'm a sound designer/audio engineer and not only is it too frequently overlooked, but it is often also one of the last priorities during production, with sometimes even things like catering getting a higher budget.

In film, there aren't enough directors who realize the importance of the audio and just have minimal training with it. They might be able to direct a great scene, and even sit there with the editing crew explaining each cut, but then the audio becomes a "Ah I know you can handle it. Just make things sound crisp. Lots of sheen!"

In game studios, its a similar situation. Most small and many mid-sized studios expect a team of one to (at most) three people to be able to handle any and all work needed to be performed on the audio. This means coding the engine for the game, as well as all the music creation and composition, sound effects creation, and in most cases recording all the voice actors' work. In my situation, I really tried breaking into the gaming industry, but game audio is honestly one of the most cut-throat fields I've ever seen.

Axonometri5007d ago

I concur. And, Thank you. Backed my point.

MasterCornholio5007d ago

Only idiots and people defending the weak hardware of their consoles/handhelds/PCs claim that's impossible to have great visuals with great gameplay.

Uncharted 2 was a fantastic game with great visuals and gameplay.

XperiaRay

Irishguy955007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

Yeah but what about when you want a non linear game that lasts longer than 10 hours? Something has to give.

Heh, look at FFXIII. Graphics yum. Gameplay - shi*

awi59515007d ago (Edited 5007d ago )

skryim has a huge world and great graphics if your on pc with mods lol. My skyrim has like 30 mods running on it lol.

matgrowcott5007d ago

I get your point but you picked some terrible examples. Final Fantasy VII, X, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus and Bioshock all had fantastic graphics for the time they were released and all, for the most part, still stand up graphically on many levels today.

More than that though, the Square Enix titles probably sold to a certain demographic because they looked so good (I know for a fact both VII and X were perfect examples for graphics whores at a point). That demographic may have grown to love the characters and the story, but originally they were in it because the developers had managed to do new and exciting things with the visuals.

So, yeah, I agree with everybody above.

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

Extermin8or3_80d ago

You say "no body wanted" but we don't actually know if the Devs were the ones to pitch it. For all we know

Elda80d ago

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot80d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania80d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown80d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel198979d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac79d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Extermin8or3_69d ago

Love the downvotes considering it's since become public knowledge that yes bluepoint DID infact pitch the god of war game. They also eventually pitched a Bloodborne remake but from software torpedoed the project, sadly.

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

Relientk7780d ago

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas80d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

Reaper22_65d ago

Because of money. Most game studios need financial backing in order to develop games.

MrNinosan79d ago

MM is most likely next to close down, and my guess it's sooner than later

FTLmaster80d ago

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning7780d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno79d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa80d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

Next ‘BioShock’ Game Changes Leaders After Development Turmoil

The fourth game in the ‘BioShock’ series has been in development for more than a decade

Bioshock is one of my favourites franchises. I love all 3 games and have played each several times. I even have a room in my house that is loosely decorated around the theme of Bioshock (with a Lighthouse, coral models and postcards styled as though they are from both Rapture and Columbus).

And yet I am going to find it extremely difficult to get even remotely excited about any future episode in the series after all the problems this has had in its development cycle.

Leave the franchise alone. Remaster them again if you have to. Then put whatever talent you have to use on something brand new.

Furesis282d ago

Since ken levine isn't involved i'm not surprised what's going on. i'm more excited for his next game which looks like bioshock. Yet he still works under take2 and they are making bioshock 4 without him, strange situation.

toxic-inferno282d ago

Yes. Judas. Looks brilliant, but it's one of those games that seems to never have had a release date. Instead it's had release windows that keep getting pushed back.

Once it's ready, I'll be there for it though. Ken Levine is an excellent developer.

I get the feeling he dissolved Irrational Games simply so that 2k couldn't tell him what to do. It seems it will pay off, but I feel sorry for those who worked as part of Irrational before it was dissolved, who hadn't independently made a name for themselves.

ActualWhiteMan281d ago

He didn’t even want to make 2, that’s why they did it without him.

Rebel_Scum282d ago

tbh it wouldnt be a Bioshock game without development hell. They all had it.

Michiel1989281d ago

bioshock 2 was 2.5 years after 1, so much of a development hell it was......

-Foxtrot282d ago

"Remaster them again if you have to"

Well apparently they were doing a remake but that got cancelled

Relientk77282d ago

It sucks this game is in development hell because I love BioShock and would love a 4th game. I hope it turns out great, but I guess we'll see.

P_Bomb282d ago

Love Bioshock. It’s too bad what’s going on. At least we have Judas.

Yui_Suzumiya281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

It's been in development hell since 2014. This is nothing new. It saddens me because it's one of my favorite series. At this point, Judas may end up releasing first.

BABI-PANGPANG281d ago

Bioshock 4 (if it ever comes out) will probably still look and play like a Bioshock game, but without Kevin, it might miss that spark that made the originals so special. Honestly, Judas might end up feeling more like the real spiritual successor.
