DmC Devil May Cry: ‘We understand why you got mad’ – Capcom

VG247: DmC: Devil May Cry takes the series in a new direction without watering down the series’ core fundamentals of combat, pacing and those ever-addictive red orbs. Capcom US producer Alex Jones has explained to VG247 why it understands fan’s initial reaction to Dante’s redesign and why it wanted to tone down the corny jokes and ‘campy’ tone of the original games.

zerocrossing5039d ago

Yes, and we hate DmC for every bloody relevant reason. Look you can't just come in and rewrite a whole franchise that's already 4 games into a unfinished story, with many questions left unanswered and decide to start over, if you do so then you best expect some unwanted but well deserved backlash, and that's what Capcom and NT are getting.

Insulting the core fanbase, calling Dante campy, ruining character design and the story (devil/angel) WTF? I'm all for the progression and improvement of any franchise, but if you're going to ignore and alienate the fanbase of a franchise that's already over a good 10 years in and still going strong according to the majority of fans, then just who the hell are they rebooting DmC for?.

GamerToons5039d ago

It's not the 'hate' brigade.

You won't find me complaining about insignificant things.

I want you guys to ask yourself.

What if the next Mario game, Mario was a blonde haired chef from Australia?

No wait Nintendo is actually smart and would never ever change a iconic and established character.

It's really a no brainer, people that liked the old games hate what they did to our characters that we grew up with.

DragonKnight5038d ago

I would rather be part of a "hate" brigade that has legitimate reasons than part of the apologisers that are responsible for enabling these bad decisions.

"Speaking with VG247 at gamescom last week, Jones discussed the way fan reaction to Dante’s revamp seems to have cooled considerably over time, “Yeah, now it’s fine, but I could have done without having to fear for my life [laughs]. There was always going to be people who saw new Dante and who didn’t want it, and that’s fine. We understand – I understand – that people are passionate about it, so this isn’t a bad thing."

This is further proof that Capcom are living in their own world, further enabled by poor excuses for journalists. I wasn't aware that fan reaction has "cooled down." Where has it cooled down? On capcom-unity? Maybe people have just stopped trying since Capcom ignores everything they say? Maybe they delete all the complaints, which wouldn't be surprising. The complaints haven't stopped, you're just used to them now and you don't care. You still think it's "just about the hair." Well, hopefully bombing sales will show you that the real DMC fans didn't go anywhere.

"Jones added, “Being angry about it – yeah I get that – but we always said, ‘when you see the game and you play it, trust me, you’re going to understand that we were doing the right thing’. Now that’s happening, so yeah it’s vindication, but it’s not like smugly sitting back and going ‘ha ha’."

You're trying to tell us we enjoy slowed combat with easy combinations that even the noobiest of noobs can perform? You're saying that we like the predetermined city walls moving in to kill you stuff? You're saying we like the use of an incredibly overused and outdated engine? You're saying we like VERGIL?! Mr. Jones, STFU. Capcom and Ninja Theory have been all about smug arrogance with this game. You absolutely would go HA HA. Except your game sucks. Don't let the idiot media fool you into thinking your game doesn't suck, they are looking to suck up to you. We aren't.

“It’s more like, ‘We understand why you guys had doubts, and we knew that we had to prove this to you, and we were happy to do it.’ That was our responsibility.”

And you didn't.

"On the subject of new Dante’s brash demeanour, finger flipping and numerous f-bombs, Jones commented, “One of the things about making a western game, we wanted to make the tone a little less campy, and a little more darker. It’s still got a sense of humour, but it’s just more appropriate in the world Dante is now in, where’s it’s less acceptable to make corny jokes and better to make darker ones."

Brash demeanor, finger flipping, and f-bombs aren't dark humour. It's douchebaggery. New Dante may as well be on Jersey Shore because he's certainly a douche like them. And as it was mentioned below, fighting demons is pretty much as dark as DMC needed to be. Having a light hearted cocky hero provided a unique and fun contrast to the tone of the game. You took that away in favour of Douchebag Dante who looks, sounds, and acts like such a douchebag that you can sympathize with the demons wanting to kill him.

“He’s still irreverent, he’s still – at the end of the day – the guy who will kick your ass and drop a cool one liner afterwards.”

Except for the part about the cool one-liners. He's more likely now to get lucky and win a fight, then go "ha ha i beat your ass" and walk away. He's exactly the kind of guy everyone wants to beat the hell out of.

"We understand why you got mad"

Don't you mean...

"We understand why YOUR STILL mad"

Do they think that everything is fine now, being ignorant and ignoring people.

If they knew we would get mad why did they still continue with it instead of making it into a new IP or spin off.

^Argee MikeCosgrove.

I like to Slap Alex Jones fat face right now.... It has cooled considerably hahaha what world are you living in??? There def still are a huge majority of fans that dislike the game still to this point. Capcom does not care for fans especially for this gen. UGH!

The whole world of Devil May Cry changed that is what people complained about. Everything we knew about the previous games are gone, now we have this Dante that's got a completely different backstory that's half angel and half demon. Many other things also...

I liked the campiness because it's the culture japanese developers to make games like that.. Remember GodHand, it had the stinking Power Rangers in there. Campy but funny and I also like to note that Capcom made it like that, It was a serious game with one liners to show off Dante's attitude. Now changed to this where he is dropping F-Bombs and flipping people off that is not cute or funny to look at its absolutely idiotic to make it vulgar like that.

Has Dante become Batman with him being dark and matching his environment? Ugh...

Don't even think about trying to reboot Onimusha, I can only imagine where they could take it if they outsourced it to the west...

You sound like you’re just a ton of fun to be around.

franwex419d ago

It’s been sitting in my backlog for a while now. One of the first games I wanted to try for this current gen due to the long load times of previous gen. I’ll get around to it soon!

One of the best, stylish, and fun action slasher on the system. You definitely should get to it, as soon as you can.

solideagle418d ago

they are taking way too much time with DMC6...

VersusDMC418d ago

The DMC5 team went on to make Dragons Dogma 2, the DMC director (3,4,5) left capcom to make an action game at another studio and the rumor is that a DMC remake is next...so i wouldn't hold my breath on DMC6.
