Which controller has the best battery life?

....idea would be rechargable batteries. Most electronics shops sell them. That way, you only need to buy one set of AA batteries. PS3 controller just seems to have an issue with dying on me at the wrong time.

lets compare how much money you loose when buying Wii controllers and 360 Controllers compared to PS3 controllers ...

when i had a Wii i bought new ´pack of batteries every 2 weeks, here in sweden its about 14$ for one pakk... after one month i've lost 30$ on batteries for 2 wiimotes...

same goes to xbox 360 controllers..

and how much did i loose on PS3 controllers, id say about 0.3$ a month for the extra power consumption, it doesnt take that much time for PS3 controller to charge, and even if its charging u can still play,...

And I can pay a one TIME price of 10-15 bux for a 15 minute recharger lol and those things can charge many many many times infact I have many many many AA and AAA that have been recharged atleast 20-30 times so far.

oh and i can get a recharge kit for 360 and i can play and charge at the same time.

Not all batties are the the same.. take samsung and panasonic batteries for example: they only have 20-30 pictures life time(on a digital camera), Energizer and Duracell are the best ones out there they have around 60-90 pictures lifetime.. But they are more expensive.

Rechargeable batteries and a charger cost around 60 bucks total. So, when u buy that PS3 u actually save an extra 60 dollars and also 6 dollars for the price of that bottle of Advil (for the headache) lol.

You also have to take into account that when your battery stops recharging on your PS3 controller, you have to buy a new controller. While you might have not had to pay anything extra yet on batteries, you will have to buy a new controller eventually.

Some say Sony will replace battery if it stops working, but does it cost you shipping? And how long will it take before you get it back. That time it takes you to send it in is time you can't use the controller.

a 30 min charger w/4 of the good rechargeable AA batteries (NiMH i believe?) best buy for like 25-30 bucks. had it for 2 years now, only had to buy a 4 pack of extras for less than $10. and the batteries go in my camera and whatever else i need, so its all good :). besides for the amount of time its lasts, the ps3 has the best solution imo (its free and included!)

Those Play and Charge kits pay for themselves pretty quickly. Same with the Nyko Charge Stations for the Wii.

18 h is plenty for us considering we plug it in when were not playing. Never seen it die but I always assumed it would only last 6 or 8 h non stop 18 is great.
ps it recharges off the regular pc usb and with the right drivers makes a great extra controller.
Havnt seen the 360 wireless but if their regular wired one is anything to go by there well made. Tho Id buy rechargeables for sure.

The 360 controller has a rechargeable battery pack you can buy for cheap with a plug and play USB charge cable. These rechargeable battery packs will rock the socks off any batteries out on the market.

ps3 battery life may not last that long but it really dosent need to since the batteries are inbuilt and you can easily charge with usb. i can't count how many times 360 batteries have died on me and i have ran around the hse searching for batteries pulling them out of remotes and such. I wised up and bought the recharge pack eventually but the fact i can't charge and play same time sucks

The 360's batteries may last the longest but you either have to buy batteries all the time or pay extra for a charger and rechargeable batteries, no thank you! Same applies to the Wii and the Wii batteries go even quicker! They go quick! The PS3 gives me the most peace of mind, no batteries to buy and you have all that's necessary to recharge them right out the box, no extra charge. I just which the wire was longer, the thing is way too short. Oh and btw, rechargeable batteries go quicker than regular batteries for those that didnt know. And to me the Wii's batteries seem to go faster than the PS3's

Perhaps you should re-read post 1.1. The idea is that you should buy rechargable batteries.

Myself? I bought 1 Play and Charge kit (the USB cable also permits connection to a PC) and the Rechargeable Battery. Plus, I bought one battery for my other controllers. At the beginning of a play session, I take the controller from the charge-cable; and plug-in another controller.

All the controllers are charged, all the time. Never have battery problems by doing this. And, I dont have a lot of unnecessary cables around.

@TheHater - You're right, the 360 did win! And no need to buy batterIES when you can buy a Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit. The rechargeable batteries get more hours of use then the PS3 controllers batteries and will last as long. When they do finally die, $9 and I buy a new rechargeable battery for the 360 controller verses $44 for a new Sixaxis Controller. You do the math!

@Cwalat - You need to figure in how much a new controller will cost you when the battery dies and can't replace it and figure in another controller when the DS3 comes out. Looks like the PS3 lost this battle!

The PS3 rechargable battery on ebay for $5.00, $10 after shipping. So, when my controller battery finally does die, i will replace it for $10 Bucks, although i will probably replace the controller with the dual shock by then.

P.S. i have 3 6axis and 1 dual shock 3, so i always have a working controller.

I'll admit that I also bought a 360, so I guess I contributed to this, but I've since put that behind me, and couldn't be happier, because now I have a better console. i'm happier now, and a lot of people could be, too, but they refuse to admit it. Which is a shame, it just means they miss out.

No need for extra batteries, just the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit that comes with one rechargeable battery and then if you have 4 controllers altogether then you pick up 3 more rechargeable batteries. Thats it! Sure it might cost a little more but at least I can replace the battery instead of the whole controller!!! But then again, you have to replace all your controllers anyway since the Sixaxis Controller doesn't rumble, how lame is that!!!

M$ has the reputation of being a monopoly but Sony and Nintendo are strong with lots of money so they will be around forever. There is no way M$ will knock either one out but they will be a huge piece of the pie no doubt. The best thing about M$ in the game as strong as they are and getting stronger is it will make the others do more to be like them if not better making M$ to be better. This is only good for us gamers whichever console you choose.

Gaming FTW!!! Xbox 360, PS3, Wii! When it comes down to it, they are all winners in there own way and really I want them all to be equal since they really are all great, just don't tell the fanboys I said that.

Someone mentioned that if their X360 play and charge kit dies they can always buy a new one instead of buying a whole new controller. I just have to comment on that.

Let's do the math shall we? X360 controller 50$ + Play N Charge kit 20$. Battery dies and you gotta give off 20$ bucks more for a new play N charge kit. A total of 90$

Sixaxis costs 50$. Battery dies. You can either buy a battery off ebay for probably around 10$. Or for most people it would probably cost 100$. Now lets say we get 2x Sixaxis since that's the most likely scenario, it would come to a total of 100$

So basically you pay 10$ difference for a whole new controller. I say that's a better deal. And the controllers are more likely to drop in price than the batteries (Sixaxis often costs 40$ on amazon). Batteries has had about the same price for a very long time. Controllers go down in price.

I can't beat the XBox 360 controller. The rechargeable lasts forever and when it runs low I just switch it out instead of having to play with a usb connection hooked up while charging.

Of course if I wanted to then I could always pull out that usb cable charger if needed. But I prefer my quick charger and swapping that puppy out in seconds when needed. And the option of using AAA batteries is great too. Best of all worlds!

My Black 360 came with a rechargeable controller... so they could have used that as a comparison with the PS3 and Wii controllers. It doesn't say which is the best battery life for controllers that come with the widest owned system. Just which controller has the best battery life. All the different controllers should have been included in this sku.

You want to know which system has the best controller over all. People are realizing it is the XBox 360 controller for ALL it's options!!! It just works so well with everything. And don't harp on the D-Pad... who is stupid enough to play a game mostly with the D-Pad? I'm not playing Mario here... this is next generation gaming people!!! The D-Pad is used for switching options and that is about it.

Sexius, sixaxis battery is changeable. Its in the manual page 18, its instructed you how to open the controller and change the battery inside.
Furthermore, the battery cost somewhere between 10-30 on ebay. I dont think you have to buy a new controller.

Perhaps you don't understand my simple comment. Or you just ran down this list and hit disagree without reading.

I'm stating that the controller would be nice if it had a battery pack standurd that would work exactly as the current PS3 controller. The only difference is you as a customer would be able to use batteries or replace the battery pack if necessary without replacing the controllers completely.

Your suggesting that the concept of mine doesn't give the PS3 controller out of the box recharge capabilities.

No I'm saying options to use batteries if you want A choice. The ability to use the USB to charge or use batteries is IMHO a superior concept provided you don't pay extra for rechargable capabilities out of the box.

It's flat out silly if you disagree because I'm saying what I would like not what you should like. It's simple to understand this concept because it suits everyone. The only side effect i'd see in this is a slightly larger controller.

Anyway please enlighten me as to why people flat out disagree yet no one has commented why? Maybe just maybe I need to explain myself better next time so people don't miss the point.

dude, trust me the ps3 pad is amazing ,i have all 3 systems, and i know although when playin wii it goes pretty quick but for some reason as i play quite random times on the wii, it lasts for weeks, another thing is sometimes my sisters play so i cant tell as much,,

but the ps3 pad over 360 pad anyday, i watch movies n stuff i always put it on charge,

when i finish i dock my pad on the usb charge cable, and when i remote play my psp from work ,,, my pads alays charging at home, while i remote play, FROM WORK !!!

do this in your every day work routine and i will never need to charge my pad again, i cant remember it being low>?? seriously soon as remote play came out its been awesome, anyway it takes ike an hour TO FULLY recharge the sixaxis, pad thats like nothing man comon..

if anybody knows about the wii and 360 battery changing, will agree.

I've discharged my PS3 controller several times using it for online play. I'd leave the console on and and a few hours later come back and notice it unplugged.

Sure the battery life is great but it comes down to this. If your batteries die in the middle of a game you have two options 1. plug it in the usb cable defeating the whole wireless controller benefits. 2. have a fully charged backup controller to swap out $$$.

With an option for replacing the batteries you have the opportunity to swap out the rechargible batteries and continue to play without cords. I hardly see the point of having a wireless controller that requires a cord.

In my case the controller is always connected to the usb cable and only when I'm playing I unpluge it.

From my understanding these controllers don't recharge while in standby either. So this effectively limits your recharging timeframe to while your playing games, you leave the console on or you use a 3rd party attachment to recharge it.

In any case having these options have no negative impact on the current performance of the controllers. I hardly see why anyone would want to argue about replacable batteries.

Millions of laptops and cell phones can't be wrong. As for shipping them back to Sony for FREE replacement. The cost of shipment isn't exactly going to be used by everyone. Most people will just buy a replacement controller then deal with the hassles. It's like those nine $ scissors that have lifetime replacement warranties or resharping. By the time you pay for shipping both ways it cost you more then buying new.

first of all, the 360 you have to either.......

1.buy a battery pack
1a. buy a charging stand if you want to charge multiples.
2.use packs batteries (that last about a week or two depending on how much you game)
3. If you want more controllers you got to buy more battery packs

Fact: $$$

second of all, the ps3 controller you have to.........

1. plug it in to the ps3.
1a. use one of the 10 usb cords you have laying around your house to charge multiples.

Fact: Free

FACT.

being able to plug in the ps3 controller to charge it w/o buying anything ever, is one of the greatest things, ever.

and has obviously not been ACTUALLY taken into consideration in this artical.

I don't know me personally i like using AA batteries for my 360 i don't ever have to be restricted to a cord. Plus the AA last longer then the PS3 battery. I guess it depends on who you ask. I work at bestbuy so i can get a 12pack of AA batteries for like a buck at cost. You're comment comes off as pure fanboy. Hate to say it but when you come it the GAMER ZONE which isn't suppose to be any fanboy remarks and post about why the xbox controller suck shows you're true nature.

I own both consoles, but I have to say that I still think it was wiser for the 360 to have a replaceable energy source than none at all.

Your a fool to think your rechargable battery is going to last forever in your PS3 controller. It will die, just like any other rechargable battery on the planet.

And Sony will only replace your controller for free if something is wrong with it for up to one year. After that, your on your own, unless you bought the extended warrenty.

I've only got 2 controllers for my 360. That's all I need. My buddies bring over their controller when doing matchups. It's nice of you to let your friends bash away on YOUR controllers that they didn't have to shell out money for. Hope they don't break 'em.

Chippathingy, what're you talking about? The battery in the PS3 controller is covered for life, if it ever stops holding a charge, you send it into Sony, and they'll replace it for free.

The actual controller - minus the battery is under warranty for 1 year, yes.

Here is something for u: Go to best buy or whatever and look at the digital cameras there, check out the price difference between those that have an integrated rechargeable battery and those that u have to buy the batteries for them.. The price difference is at least 50 bucks.. WOw, just Wow.

You are partially correct in that a rechargeable battery will eventually die and have to be replaced, but you are incorrect that you have to send it in to Sony to have this done. In fact this is the most common myth around the ps3 controller. If people were to actually read the manual for it it clearly explains on page 18 that if the controllers battery dies you simply remove the 5 screws from the bottom of the controller, take out the old battery and replace it with a new one.

I once accidentally dropped one on my controllers jamming one of the triggers, and had to open it. I was personally surprised when I pulled off the bottom of the controller there was actually another shell inside with what looked like a li-on battery similar to the one in my old creative zen mp3 player.

Okay, instead of buying a 30 dollar blu ray disk you could buy the 20 dollar charger for your 360 and have the same setup as Ps3. Is it really that complicated to go spend 20 bucks after all the other stuff we buy for our consoles. I can't believe this is an argument. Yes if your point is convienence than you won. It would probably do some people good getting out of the house soaking up some of that vitamin D the sun has to offer anyway. I forgot there was a sun until yesterday. We live in a country where some people spend 5 dollars a day on coffee, I don't think 20 dollars that much. Not to mention that you can say free all you want but that 600 bucks wasn't just for the console. I guess for 200 hundred more you get blu ray and a rechargable controller. Does Ps3 come with a headset ?

Was all it cost me for my rechargeable batteries with charger. Came with 4, I always have 2 ready to swap when I need to recharge the other pair. So I never run out of juice on 360. Yet I have to recharge my sixaxis every other day. What the hell is the battery life gonna be like when dualshock 3 gets here? The rumble will drain the battery even more.

I was worried about the same thing last year when I bought my PS3...I didn't like the idea of it not having a replaceable pack like digital cameras or something (liked that it could be recharged, its just those things eventually do where out over a few years)...

I remember reading that Sony would replace the battery of any sixaxis down the line that dind't hold a charge anymore for free...and vaguely remember a number to call in the manual or warranty card...but can't remember what I did with that stuff anyway...

I have had 3 sixaxis controllers...the one that came with the system...and two extras...though one of the extra controllers was destroyed in a moving van (a dresser fell on the box with the controller in it, luckily only one of the 3 got toasted)...I know for a fact though that the controller that shipped with my PS3 lasts just as long as my 3 month old extra...the original sixaxis is going on a year of near daily use, whether it was left on all night by accident when folding, watching a movie, or gaming...it has been on almost every day for several hours...I figure about every 15 hours it needs charged, but it only takes an hour to do it...if you have 2 controllers, you are set...with just one, I could see why this could be a hassle...unless you buy one of the 10 foot usb cables, to charge and game at the same time...

I have 4 PS3 controllers, pretty much since a year now. No trouble with them what so ever since. The good thing if you have multiple controllers, that you always have one (or two or three) fully charged, anyhow. What's the big deal. I can't complain about the duration either. So what. You can play a couple of days. If goes out, switch, hook it up and play with the other one. I mean, its not like you play a couple of minutes and its over again. I am just happy I don't have to unload the batteries, hook them up to charge or buy new ones. I think its pretty convenient the way it works for me.

That's a big price contrast to the USB cable i'm using to charge my sixaxis and dual shock 3 (came with the console). I use a second one for PSP transfers.

^^^ and that is assuming you are using rechargable AA batteries in the 360 controller...you can still use regular AA batteries, which are what apparently gets like 50 hours of use according to this article...

but that is mostly because of its auto off feature right?...I just glanced over it, but I noticed in the PS3 test they said "due to no auto-off feature like the wii or 360, battery life suffers"...if a firmware update has an auto off feature, could be a different story...

I've got a big pack of batteries to use for my 360.
it did make it through both me and my flatmate playing all the way through bioshock before running out on its first set.
I'm now on my 3rd set (total) while playing mass effect.
personally I prefer the PS3 controllers because I have two of them so I swop them round on the charger when one runs out....plus you can use the USB cable to play while its charging.

The PS3 is the best one simply because you don't need to buy batteries/a battery charger pack like it's a fucfing gameboy or something.

Well, it's important that I add that I usually play with my USB still attached. I only detach it when I'm using the sixaxis to steer in motorstorm. So any downsides to the battery life is lost.

Both the wii and 360's battery life will depend on what quailty batteries they put in. And then Ps3s is rechargable. You cant really compare them. I take it, its been a very slow month for gamepro lol.

Still i would take recharable batteries over having to buy new ones every few weeks

I have four Wii remotes and I'm forever swapping batteries out of them. It doesn't get more playtime than the PS3, not sure how long they actually last, but doesn't seem like the # of hours quoted. I never even think about the PS3. I have 2 controllers and one is always charged up, so it never becomes an issue. It starts getting low, I plug it in and use the other.

It does seem like the PS3 should be the top of the stack on this since the controller is much simpler than the others (especially the Wiimote). Surprising it isn't

I usually play games by myself and I have two controllers, so when one runs even half way down, I switch and plug in the one that's low. If I'm planning to game with friends, I just make sure they are both charged. If we play all day and evening, it doesn't kill them and I just plug them both in after we're done so they will be ready the next day. If you kill your PS3 control, you've either been on one heck of a gaming bender or you lack planning.

And it is my understanding that you can replace the battery pack yourself if it goes dead. I may be wrong on that though.

the real comparison is do you have to stop playing because your controller went dead. if the answer is no then you are a winner regardless of console. If you plug in your ps3 controller while you fold or watch a movie it will always have plenty of juice to play for as long as you can.

ps3 controllers in my experience last forever, and even if its dying i just plug it in and keep on playing, the normal ps3 can charge 4 controllers at once and charges quick, not only that, but the play and charge cable is sold at the dollar store, come on, who wants to buy batteries. i still have all my controllers since i got my ps3 last year and guess what??? they are still goin strong, sept for the used one i bought...., its only good for fighting games lol

I don't see anyone complaining about bluetooth mice. Or any other bluetooth equipment until its equipped on a ps3. I've had several for years that just need to be plugged in versus me driving to a store and buying batteries.

Its like people are anti-anything when Sony is involved.

I plaayed ps3 at my friends house on his second controleer and the usb cord they give you is 2 feet long. I have a rechargable pack for my 360 and it lasts a long time. yes I had to buy it but It was cheap and It will save me on real batteries. The advantage the 360 controler has over PS3 controler is that I still have the option of putting in the normal battiries for and hour(yes 1 hour) while my battery pack gets charged incase I run outa power. It isnt a big deal to switch them out as the normal batteries are still full after many many short uses. It is the same concept as the PS3 controller but it can use normal batteries, so you are never forced to plug a stupid cord in to play. That is better in my opinion.

I like the way the PS3 does it best. I recently got battery packs and the charge and play cable for my 360 controllers and there are some things about it that are a little annoying. 1) You can't charge a controller without it being on, so when my wife plays Viva Piñata the other controller vibrates all over the place so we have to set it on a pillow or something so it isn't making a racket. 2) It charges sloooooowly. 3) When I shut down the 360 while it's charging a controller the fan (you know the really loud one) stays ON, which is totally annoying if I want th watch TV or play another system or just be in the room, so I have to get up and unplug the controller from the cable to get it to stop.

All this from the charging system that you pay for (as opposed to the PS3 way). The quick charge kit might alleviate all of those woes, but you have to always take the pack off the controller which seems silly to me.

I wouldn't say the comparison is incorrect, just incomplete.

It would be more interesting to see how well the battery powered controllers fare with expensive batteries as well as cheap batteries. I'd also like to see details about Dualshock 3 controllers and Wii controllers when the nun-chuk is added on.

Personally I don't care if the PS3's controller battery lifespan is short because USB charging is great, if you Fold@Home or put the game on pause for 10 minutes while you make a snack, charge the controller while you're away.

Batteries just annoy me, that's why my mouse is corded.

And I don't recall 360 having a Uber battery life.

Hmm - I got a plug and play kit as soon as I bought my 360, throwing away batteries is not only a mugs game, it environmentally unsound too! :) I consider an essential purchase and always thought it was cheap of MS not to include it in the console price.

I must admit to being a little perplexed by their stated results..

My PS3 controllers seem to last for a lot more gaming than my 360 ones do on the official MS play and charge pack? This always made more sense to me, as the MS ones waste a lot of energy rumbling (something I tend to switch off when I can for most games.)

Of course when you can simply plug them into a USB again and carry on playing, it doesn't make a great deal of differnece! :)

I should mention I haven't had enough occasion to use the WII to be able to make much of a comment.....

I use rechargeable batteries in my Wiimotes, but I thought I'd calculate how much it would have cost me to run them on AA batteries.

* The Wiimote runs for 36 hours and 43 minutes (36.72hr) on a pair of AA alkaline batteries
* A pack of 48 alkaline batteries is available at Costco for $11 ($0.23/battery)
* Assume an average of two hours of play per day
* The Wii has been out for 439 days

[(878hr play time) / (36.72hr run time)] * ($0.46 per battery swap) = $10.99

So.... $11 to play a Wii for two hours a day since launch--I'd just be finishing up my first box of batteries. Not too expensive at all. Two and a half cents per day (half that per hour of play)--you'd probably pay nearly that much for electricity to charge your six axis.

people will disagree when your battery life is grossly overstated, I played my Wii over a weekend for about a total of twenty hours and went through 4 pairs of brand new Alkaline batteries. It is common knowledge that the Wii gets terrible battery life, in this test the Wiimote was left largely inactive. My Xbox 360 with the charge and play kit gets OK battery life. My best advice for Wii owners is to invest in the Nyko charge kit for Wii.

So many places improperly reported that the batteries were not replaceable, yet a simple look in the ps3 manual on page 18 shows the steps, and I've seen the battery my self. Hey, if Sony actually stands by what it says, then great for all PS3 owners. But if the incident regarding the laptop battery fiasco that happened a year ago is any indication, then I won't bet that Sony will replace the controller or the battery when it finally dies out (Out of warranty of course).

Lifetime warrenty they say? Doubt it. Nothing electronic these days carries a lifetime warranty, especially rechargable batteries.

Electricear - Maybe read the WHOLE article before you post. Sony stated that yes, the battery is replaceable(of course this cost is to you the consumer), but if you yourself opens the casing, your warranty is void. Please educate yourself before posting please. Do you actually think Sony will honor its warrenty if some 15 year old screws up the controller trying to replace the battery?? I wouldn't.

People argued that the batteries were not replaceable, and that Sony would only replace the controller if it were under warranty. If Sony will replace the controller for free if the batteries die under warranty, then there is no need for an individual to have to worry about replacing their battery in this situation. Thus the only situation where a battery would be replaced is when the warranty has expired.

Honestly a li-on battery should last at least 3-5 years unless it was defective or improperly used. If it were defective it can be sent back to Sony under warranty; however, if the warranty has expired then swapping out a battery every 3-5 years by unscrewing 5 screws doesn't seem like that much of a pain. I wouldn't expect a warranty to last that long on any controller (except those old wico controllers). Lastly Li-on batteries are recyclable which makes them far more environmentally friendly than tossing out a pair of alkalines every few weeks.

Not sure if i would agree with the x360 controler lasting longer. I have 2 controlers so 1 is always charging and i only have 1 for the ps3, but in my oppinion the sixaxis lasts longer and is less of a hustle. And i use the ps3 more now as well. I have plug and play charge kit for the 360 which doesn`t use AA batteries, but i found it even more of a hustle when i was using AA batteries before. The PS3 just suits me better.

PS3 console comes default with 1 charger USB cable. Meaning, the battery will never deplete if you keep it plugged in (default accessory with the console so it's a default feature). Playstation 3's controller thus has the longer battery life since it's constantly charging.

Hmmm... I dont really see the point because I use rechargable batteries. The differences in rumble, controller shape & feel, analog stick quality, d-pad.... these features seem more worthy of comparison. But, in the end it's all a personal preference.

I like the 360's design, feel, & rumble... but the D-pad sucks. I did a mod on one my controllers to fix the issue though (you just sand the casing abit around the D-pad), now it's my "arcade" controller.

The PS3 contoller is nice, but just too dinky feeling & small for my adult hands. Six axis is cool in the games that it actually proves useful, & not a hinderence. The D-pad is better...

Again, I say controllers are a personal preference... And definately:

Buy rechargable batteries.

umm I agree the Sixaxis does have a crappy battery life (my mp3 can play movies longer then it can stay on) But IT DOES have auto-off. I've seen it work many times. They must have been actually using it the whole time, mine turns off like 30min w/o use.

Xbots say that the sixaxis is bad for having integrated battery, that you`d have to buy a new controler when the battery loses it`s life, but as a xbox owner myself i must say that i`m more worried of the console braking down than i am of the sixaxis braking down. The console is far more important to be reliable than the controler.

Battery life really isnt an issue with me for the ps3... just plug a usb lead in (which ive got by the ps3) and keep playing... infact I quite often play with it still plugged in even though its charged.

A lot easier than messing around with AA batteries and rechargers etc... infact I played my wii for the first time in ages round xmas and had flat batteries... took be a good 15 mins to find 4 AAA batteries where as the ps3 takes seconds.

Interesting link a few posts above mind with an unscrewed controller. Guess it will just be the same as ipod batteries and people selling aftermarket ones. Doesnt worry me too much as even if mine died a day outside warrenty will just mean playing with it hooked up via usb for a bit.

Going back to the chart though if those figures are correct then they all last what id consider an acceptable amount of time so its all good for everyone :)

Obviously, I own a PS3, but I will say that the controller life SUCKS compared to the other systems. I could play for days when I had a 360...those controllers just wouldn't stop!

Now imagine if you put some E2 lithium batteries in there...you know...the batteries that are like 5 dollars for 2 of them...lol

The fact that you don't have to buy a charging unit for the PS3 is a plus. Being able to swap out rechargable battery packs in my 360 quickly and remain wireless while gaming is great too. I think the 360's rechargable packs last closer to 40 than 60 hours.

Another slanted comparison, If they really wanted to make a fair comparison they would have compared the Xbox 360 controllers rechargable battery with the PS3's controller. ofcourse alkaline batteries are going to last longer than a rechargable battery. If they had of compared rechargable to rechargable, they would have found that the PS3's charge last longer than the Xbox 360's charge does. I have both systems and this has been my experience with the controllers.

Im on a 2 controller rotation when one dies after like 4 -5 days I get up walk 3 feet switch and play with a fresh one.. Elites and Halo Edition 360 come with a charger pack. A large number of 360 owners have that as a standard. Most Xbox 360 owners pay the $19.95 for the charger pack. It's not big deal. It works fantastic. You can even recharge your controller while the system is off (unlike other systems).

The only company that skrewed me is MS for making me buy a console that keeps braking down on me and spends half the time travelling bk and forth to the repair center. The battery lasts forever in my controler cos i rarely have a chance to play and the intervals between brakedowns are getting shorter, and when it works i don`t wanna play cos i don`t wanna spend the day on the phone with MS stupid customer service.

From personal experience: My 360 controllers seem to go through a set of double-A's or a single charge from the Play and Charge kits in about 30 hours or so. I have a charge kit for each controller, with a spare set of Energizer Max batteries on hand, just in case.

For those on the fence: Play and Charge kits pay for themselves in a matter of a weeks, especially if you're a more hardcore gamer.

I might be wrong but I think...when watching DVD or BD's it doesnt, but depending on the game, it will go dormant like other controllers.

1. If the gmae console /game is not communicating with the controller, it will go dormant (This is a fact, try turning on the controller without the game on)

2. If its not this way, this can currently be done in software, so that the system sees inactivity for a long period of time and automatically tells the controller to go dormant.

Once again PS3 for the win because of firmware updating (if needed).

To shut them off you have to do:

I'm sure all of the game systems have rechargeable battery packs. My 360 has one. And it is a cord so I can choose to play while it charges directly into the console and then disconnect while in play and use it wirelessly. And considering the cost of standard batteries, it only makes sense to get the rechargeable. If you are a gamer who has family or friends playing the console constantly then I would recommend the multicharger pack which plugs into a wall socket. I believe they charge the batteries (2 at a time) in about 2 hours. If you are playing any console with standard batteries, you probably should get your head checked.

I must point out that the 360 requires you to pay extra for rechargeable batteries, but they are available and you can use standard AA rechargeable batteries for cheap. The play and charge kit is nice and comes with a LONG cable as opposed to the PS3, but again an additional charge. Well seems like the 360 controller and even the Wii has a well thought out controller with a... well though out price too!

The PS3 is the cheapest of the bunch since it comes with the rechargeable batteries. It lacks both an easy way to replace the batteries and rumbling. A likely scenario is many consumers will just buy another controller instead of replacing the battery due to the screw. The cord is also suprisingly short and I have never seen LONG micro USB type connector cords sold although I'm sure they exist online. You can say PS3 owners got rechargeable batteries instead of rumbling. Overall I'm suprised at Sony's move to make the rechargeable battery non-removable considering their openess. Yes, you can unscrew the controller, but it doesn't look like it was planned for consumers to do so.

AA rechargable batteries don't go this long anyway, only new (and good quality) regular AA batteries do (I've been the entire weekend on my sister's house and play a lot on my nephew's 360 - second thoughs on Mass Effect by the way).

Anyway, it is smarter to just plug your controller when it starts to run out of life and continue playing, be it on play'n'charge kit for 360 or on USB cable on PS3... I really can't careless about it, I mean, if you want to play that time long, maybe you shoud consider buy a wired controller: problem solved.

I was under this assumption for the longest time as well. The month prior to the release of the PS3 a Sony Rep said the PS3 control could be sent in for replacment if the battery stops holding charge. When actually there are instructions on how to replace the battery in the manuals. Someone else stated this and I didn't believe them. But he is actually correct.

The Sixaxis can operate wirelessly via Bluetooth and up to 7 simultaneous controllers are supported natively by the console.[1] The controller also features a USB mini-B port, which can be used to connect a USB cable for internal battery charging and synchronisation with the PS3 system. The controller can be seamlessly switched from wireless to wired operation, and is charged automatically upon connection. The controller, much like the Xbox 360's, still communicates wirelessly with the console when plugged in and some data is still transferred wirelessly, such as pairing information. The Playstation 3 console comes with a USB to USB mini cable, but spare controllers do not include one.
The Sixaxis can operate for up to 30 hours on a full charge. The battery was originally not thought to be replaceable when a Sony spokesperson stated that the Sixaxis should operate for "many years before there's any degradation in terms of battery performance. The Wii with Alkaline batteries last 3 times longer than any of the kits and lithium-ion are super expensive.

Overall, assuming each has rechargable batteries:
1. PS3, cuz u get it for free, usb chargable.
2. 360, have to purchase quick charger but lasts as long as the PS3.
3. Wii, doesn't last long, most recharger kits aren't much good and you have to buy them.

This "study" is crazy. I have all three systems and the ps3 controller wins hands down. My 360 controllers burn threw batteries like crazy and so does the wii and whats with not being able to charge them off of the system. I had to buy rechargable batteries for the wiimotes and the 360 controllers which almost added up to the price of a new controller. The ps3 controllers just plug into the usb slot and voila, you never have to stop playing. You actually have to manage when you charge and play with the other two.

There's one thing he failed to mention, how long it takes a PS3 controller to charge VS. 360's charge & play kit. ( yet you can't charge & play at the same time )

The battery on my sixaxxis controller had 1 notch, I plugged it into my PC then turned the console off. Bullsh!tted for 20mins then went to go plug it in and it was full. Plus if I wanted I could've just plugged it in, and kept on playin'.

Hmm, something seems not right. My 360 pad runs some Duracell Supreme 2650mah NiMH batteries, same as the Wii and it doesn't seem to last as long as the remote. Put it this way. My 360 rarely gets used, maybe 2 times a week, and I seem to charge those more than I charge the Wii remote.

Although they admitted it's not scientific, there are so many variables it was kind of a waste of time to even test it. Different games rumble at different times and for different durations. Some Wii games make use of the speaker, some don't. Same with the pointer. It might have been worthwhile trying the 360 pad with the headset for a while seeing as the Wii remote has a speaker built in.

It was fun, but I don't think you will ever be able to compare these controls like for like.

You don't get charge packs for the Sixaxis or DS3, as they both have an internal rechargeable battery. I don't think the Wii has charge packs, either.

However, they could compare the performance of the 360 pad w/ a charge pack to it's performance w/out a charge pack.

You know what else I have a gripe about is the length of the PS3 charge cord? It's very short, about 2 to 3 feet in length which means I can't play and sit on my couch at the same time while it's charging. The 360 plug and play cord on the other hand is very long, like 10 or 12 feet it seems which I can easily plug, charge and play at the same time.

Another feature that puts the 360 above the PS3 is the 360 controller will automatically turn itself off after about 15 minutes of inactivity. The PS3 controller will stay on unless you manually turn it off. Very well thought out features by Microsoft in this category.

I work @ a store called Batteries plus and i know a bit about batteries. I do know that the rechrgeable packs for the 360 are 2400 mah which is aproximately 2.4 hours of runtime under normal circumstances and goood for about 20-30 recharges they are also Ni-mh.
The PS3 batteries are lithium-ion and have @ about 2100 mah which is about 2.1 hours of use depending on the amperage drawn. The PS3 batteries can recharge about 50-100 times before needing replacement , and yes they can be replaced look in your manual, the average cost for these is between 10-30 depending where you buy them.

Personally I still have my original controllers for my PS3.I have had them since the NA launch. They still last about 4-5 days before charging is needed.

I've gotten about 35 hours out of mine before, and probably a bit more because I got new batteries for oblivion when i bought it. I had about 30-35 hours of game played before i had to recharge them which i thought was amazing.

I can remember all the people (who never intended to buy one) complaining about the PS3 batteries being built in and wah wah wah it'll break.

Meanwhile I got sick of my XB batteries always running out in the middle of a game and having to pinch them from remotes. I finally bought a charger, and enough batteries to power them all. Cost me a packet. You still get them running out while playing cos you have to wait til they're flat and its annoying but at least there are always batteries in remotes to swap over with and then charge up again.

Still doesn't beat the PS3 though. I've never had a controller go flat cos I use it for a week or so and then plug it into the usb while using the other one. One in use, one on charge. Never been flat.

When a ps3 controller starts flashing those lights, all you gotta do is plug it into the console and continue playing...that way you never worry about it dying and not being able to play especially if you have two or more. I always have one on the wire while playing with the other, then I just switch them up when needed. I never play multiplayer that much where both would die at the same time(I also have a brand new third one which I havent opened yet cuz im trying to sell it, but that's beside the point).

Did the testers use play movies on the Xbox 360 during the test also? I noticed in the article that reference was made to the fact that the Wii and 360 remotes automatically turn off after a certain period of time. Was this duration during which the Wii and 360 remotes were automatically powered down included in the battery test?

If this "powered down" time was included in the test, then they should have turned off the PS3 remote during movies, as it will skew the results.

Otherwise, interesting article. I never bothered to figure out how long the charges on my controllers lasted. Now I know (assuming these results are really accurate)

If anybody keeps buying regular batteries for their 360 controller, it is just foolish. You can buy the play and charge kit, or better yet, buy the 15 min. Energizer battery recharger and some rechargeable batteries. I always have some spare batteries charged, and charge the drained batteries in only 15 minutes.

Not only does the 360 controller have the best batteries, but it is the most ergonomically correct too. It feels way more natural in your hand than the PS controller. I know people who have been playing the PS1 and 2 for years will like the PS controller because that's what they're used to, but for people who haven't, the 360 controller will win hands down. You can get used to it almost instantly. For the next Xbox, I hope they don't change a thing about the controller, except maybe slightly improve the D-pad.

I used to play with a wired controller all the time. But now that I bought a wireless controller, any wired controller bugs me. I like the feeling of being to move the controller around without the wires hitting me.
