Bit-Tech: Zynga has been in the news a lot lately for its supposed tendency to clone existing games in a stunningly brazen way, throwing up the difficult question of how similar one game can be to another while also remaining original. Is it enough to just change the colour palette or do you need to replace the graphics wholly? What about if you keep the graphics but change the gameplay? Where, precisely, is the line?
All of which is to say that Sleeping Dogs is very - very - much like Grand Theft Auto IV... while also being nothing like it at the same time.
The similarities are what leap out first, with developer United Front apparently unashamed in showing Rockstar's influence on the game. It's not just the macro-level urban sandbox stuff that speaks to it, but the details too - how Wei Shen's mobile phone pops up out of the lower right corner, how you escape police by leaving the search radius on the mini-map. There's a whole load of stuff tying Sleeping Dogs to GTA IV; Square's Social Hub even sounds like Rockstar's Social Club.
United Front Games developed a really unique experience with Sleeping Dogs, and it still holds up. Unfortunately, any hope at a sequel hinges on it getting more popular almost a decade later.

Square has their own GTA and they haven't bothered making a sequel. Yet they're wasting money on nfts and live service crap.
Gotta be more specific. Did it sell well to Square and their unrealistic expectations? Probably not. Did it sell well and garnered enough praise to deserve a sequel? Yes. They also bought the rights from Acti when it was True Crime so they must've thought it was worth it at the time so idk why they've let the IP die out.
According to Square Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution and even Tomb Raider Reboot bombed on varying levels. They all dropped around the same time. All sold well enough but Square and it's lofty expectations got in the way. I remember Square was mumbling that TR sold 3 million + in a month.
As long as the game fits YOUR ideals eh? Whatever happened to artists creating what artists want...

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.
Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion
Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
