Could PS4 Be Announced at GamesCom 2012?

MasonicGamer.com: Sony are the only Big players in the console market to be at GamesCom 2012, their Press Conference takes place on the 14th August. Could Sony Play an ACE card and annonce their Next Gen Console and steal the show?

Internet rumours of a new and Super Slim update to the PS3 have been going round for sometime, but does this really make any sense? We already have slim PS3′s and the Price Point is now on par with Microsofts Xbox 360, Do you really believe that their big show at Gamescom will be a new version of the already on the market slim PS3?

My head would explode but I don't think it's possible.

decrypt5034d ago (Edited 5034d ago )

Not much chance, they still want to make money on current consoles as demand remains high.

Demand remaining high proves people are fine with current hardware. So why start another generation and incur losses? as it is a new gen will only mean better graphics. Both MS and Sony know console gamers dont care about graphics.

I think its smart planning on their side, if graphics were so important to a console gamer Wii wouldnt have sold so well. MS and Sony should give Move and Kinect a larger push, it suits their customer base perfectly.

SAE5033d ago

you think ps2 didn't have high demands befor the ps3 announced or even released ?. people still buy it too , it's not not only about demands , it's about time , the right moment when most of the people are excited for it , 4 months ago no one talk about the ps4 , now all of the people i know are waiting for it , n4g started to want it too

guitarded775033d ago

New PS3 SKU == NO PS4 announcement.

Campy da Camper5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

@decrypt. One idea would be to buy a slim and get 50 bucks off the ps4 when release or even a free game. That would move current systems off the shelf pronto

darthv725033d ago

the key word is "could". Yes it "could" be announced but the bigger question is will it? For that there is simply one answer.

Wait and see.

raytraceme5033d ago

Now that europe is sony's biggest market for the playstation it doesn't hurt to do that. Plus a 5 second super sneak peak doesn't hurt to hype up for next year ;)

gaffyh5033d ago

No way it'll be at GamesCom, though it could possibly be announced at a PlayStation day in January, but still also is unlikely.

violents5033d ago

@decrypt

"Both MS and Sony know console gamers dont care about graphics."

Thats way off dude. I care about graphics a lot. I only own a ps3 because i dont make enough money to keep up with more than one gaming station or keep a computer rig up to date and i loved my ps2 so i made the decision to use ps3. That just seems like a really stupid statement. If console owners/makers didn't care about graphics we would all still just have an atari.

Could world peace be announced at gamescon?

Ares84HU5034d ago

That's such a terrible analogy.

pandaboy5034d ago

@ares

that wasn't an analogy it was hyperbole and an effective one at that.

Ares84HU5033d ago

@pandaboy

Well to me it looks like he made the similarities between the PS4 being announced to world peace being announced. According to his comment, they are in the same category.

So to me it is an analogy since he thinks they are similar. Or at least have the same exact chance of being announced which is ridiculous.

Fez5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Here you go Ares, maybe spend a little less time with Koalemos and a little more time with Athena...

I think the PS4 will be announced last. At least if the empty rumours going around are any indication.

I have no idea when it will even be out.

FFXI1015033d ago

"I think the PS4 will be announced last"
I think is unlikely they'll announce at GC. It'll be either TGS this year or E3 next year.

Thatguy-3105034d ago

would have been leaked id doubt it. Not a lot of info has leaked so the announcement is pretty far

SandWitch5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Agree, I think Sony will make a dedicated press conference for showing PS4 sometime in 2012 Q4 or early 2013.

ATi_Elite5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

NO! No Way! Not even close!

instead of making up crappy articles with FlaimBait titles, how about you do some real reporting and go find out whats going on with Agent, The Last Guardian, or maybe get a sneak peak at the new consoles. Basically go find real "factual news" to report on instead of making stuff up!

seriously these lame headlines and made up stories are just STUPID!!

syanara5033d ago

I don't think so but keep in mind Gamescom is almost 4 times the size of E3

morkendo235033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

then i will pay a million one dollars! thats like a million :0

neutralgamer195034d ago

These next gen rumor articles just get me %ucking mad. I have the money and i want my next gen consoles. And i mean real next gen not a console to play little bs kids games on!!!!!

victoryscreeeeeech5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

I like to think that your not talking about the Wii u. It doesn't seem like you are much of a neutral gamer either.

HammadTheBeast5033d ago

If you supposedly have the money, you wouldn't be here, and would probably be gaming on a hig end pc.

Alos885034d ago

Very, very unlikely. That's the kind of bombshell you only hear about at E3.

MasonicGamer5034d ago

Quote from article... "In the past E3 as been the big the launch platform for console announcements but this year was different, there was none; Console announcements usually follow a trend. E3 annonce, more info at gamescom, more info at next years E3 then launch winter. So why no console announcements this year if we are getting new consoles in winter 2013 (Not confirmed dates)? If we take the above trend for example, the simple answer could be at the time everyone was unsure if E3 would be on in 2013 due to building work (don’t worry E3 is now confirmed). So maybe Sony held back for GamesCom, this would give them a simler time scale to the trend above."

Alos885034d ago

It doesn't seem like a big enough event for this kind of thing. Maybe that's the point though, to suddenly create a massive amount of conversation by making a shock announcement.

Thatguy-3105034d ago

It has become evident that sony hasn't really put much focus on revealing a lot of stuff at E3 as of lately. I guess since theyre the only conosle makers holding a conference it gives them the chance to take out the big guns. Remember Resistance 3 announcement? remodeled ps3 announcement? wouldn't be surprise if they did but i doubt it. I think most likely they'll announce the Ps3 slim there and a price cut.

JBSleek5034d ago

No console has ever been announced as an E3 that isn't the case and that is an American event so why would Sony first unveil it there.

E3 is when you elaborate on already announced consoles.

Zhipp5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

In recent memory both the Wii U and the 3DS were both officially announced at E3.

JBSleek5033d ago

@Zhipp

On April 25, 2011, Nintendo released a statement officially announcing a system to succeed the Wii.

On March 23, 2010, Nintendo officially announced the Nintendo 3DS handheld console, successor to the Nintendo DSi.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn224d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn223d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown24d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay23d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay23d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac23d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger24d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300024d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde24d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde23d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
