No one is too big to fail but Nintendo can lose money for years and years and years:
http://www.nintendolife.com...

Nintendo sold almost 100 million units of Wii + 150 millions units of DS. Now the 3DS is almot at the 20 millions mark (selling even better than the original DS at the same period). Nintendo also sold almost 20 million copies of several games (Pokémon Diamond / Pearl Version sold 18M copies, New Super Mario Bros sold 28M copies, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 25M copies, Wii Sports Resort sold 29M copies etc etc) in this generation alone.

Do the math for New Super Mario Bros Wii: 25.000000 copies x $30 (I know it was launched for a higher price, but let's put 30)= 750 millions in revenue with just one game lol.... it's insane. Sony lost billions and they are expecting to lose more money this year.

I don't even know what "750 millions" is and it's just one game. Nintendo had 7 games selling above 20 million copies on Wii and 9 games selling abov 10 million copies on DS. Now the 3DS is following the same pattern. Super Mario 3D Land already sold above 6 million copies.

And yet, people say the WiiU will be Nintendo's last console, Nintendo is always doomed, Nintendo is always going to stop making hardware, Nintendo is always going to fail. There is no way I will undestand journalism and fanboys nowadays.

The thing is: Even if the Wii U is a failure, Nintendo will have a huge amount of cash.

Exactly what I've said. Even if Wii U fails they will just try another angle.

They just want them to fail because they don't like the idea behind the system. But having 3 systems of the same style is boring and we need choice. Its nice to see someone being different from their competitors as a breath of fresh air.

I WAS going to give this article the time of day but then
"and the Wii U seems poised to fail"
I'm sorry what? Since when?
Deja Vu? They said the same for DS/3DS and Wii
WiiU will not fail, but even if it didn't do great. They would still have 8-10 billion to fall back on and put into new console...

rpd1235047d ago

They say that every console is poised to fail. They have yet to be right.

DanielBryan5047d ago

It won't fail.
It won't fail.
It won't fail.
Oh,I am repeating myself? Sorry, playing the same Nintendo games for 26 years, over and over again, are starting to take its toll.

Thatguy-3105047d ago

If it survive two generations of Sony domination it will mostly likely survive regarless if the Wii u succeeds or not.

Instigator5046d ago

Well, I think it's time you buy a new game, then.

bothebo5046d ago

That went over your head..

Instigator5046d ago

@bothebo
Really? It went over MY head? I just made an obvious joke about the misconception that Nintendo doesn't make new games. You really think I believe he's played SMB for 26 years?

born2live5047d ago

I hope it won't fail, but I would see nothing wrong with Nintendo becoming a 3rd party developper... Most of their sales are from 1st party games anyway... Unless someone thinks it would be weird playing mario on PS3 or 360?

AWBrawler5046d ago

Riiiight and i guess you wouldn't mind have Halo or Uncharted on Wii U either, huh?

born2live5046d ago

Exactly my point - I wouldn't mind at all! But from what I've seen from the Wii U, I don't see how having that additional screen in your hands would improve the experience. It seems like the whole thing is just another gimmick and I'm not yet convinced that it will actually bring something more to the experience - most of the games that have been announced so far are ports of older games (except for ZombiU and one or two first party games - I'm always a fan of zombie games, and I hope it won't disappoint). Haven't they learned that a great (but overpriced) console + a bad line up = no console sales (with the 3DS last year)? Nintendo has incurred substantial losses in Q1 of this year, and bringing another console on the market will probably not help (although the timing is better this time around, right around xmas).

So, if Nintendo was to stop making consoles, I would not call them losers - I would call them smart businessmen. I would miss the "Nintendo" feel in the sense that there is always something intriguing about the hardware they come up with (power glove! one of the first console controller with joystick AND trigger button (N64), although not as functional as the 360 controller, the Wii itself, even the freakin Virtual Boy), but it's not always been successful, and a fail on the Wii U could possibly mean the end of the tv console division. Thankfully, they are doing great in the handheld console market, where their success is undeniable.

I wish them a lot of success with the Wii U. I hope 3rd party dev. will actually spend the time to port and adapt their games to the Wii U (in a way that exploits well the unique elements of that console), but it seems unlikely, at least not before Nintendo can prove that the Wii U is a critical success.

Before I go (and before you Nintendo hardcore fans bubble me down for just speaking facts), I need you guys to have a look at the 3DS line up until Xmas... Except for Mario, what else is there for the 3DS? Ok, ok, I am as hyped as you guys about Poke Black/White 2, so let's include it there even if it's technicallly a DS game. But what else is there (in NA - ya freakin japs get all the good games, and I luv you guys, btw)? Thundercats? And you want to release another console in a climate of economical uncertainty, with not enough games to back it up? Does that sound like a good business strategy? I understand that they have to get the Wii U out ASAP, before xbox and PS come up with their next gen console, but it may lead to a disastrous year, and they are already struggling with their shares' value...

AWBrawler5045d ago

If gamecube didn't kick them out the Console business, then Wii U can die a horrible flaming Dreamcast like death, and they'd still survive and be able to make another. Do you not know Nintendo is one of the most profitting companies in Japan?. 1 bad selling console won't end them.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer87d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot86d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno86d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay86d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno85d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK85d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
