Just type that question into the search engine of your choice and you’ll be linked to a vast array of editorials, blogs, and message board threads dedicated to find an answer – or at least raging about the downfall of the series. Browsing these forums will reveal a number of potential catalysts that may have led to the franchise’s current M.I.A. status. While there are quite a few different setbacks that gamers have identified, most of them lead back to one overriding issue: developers were attempting to make the game more accessible to a larger mainstream audience.
Former Naughty Dog artist Gabriel Betancourt explains why the "sweet spot" for game teams is under 200 people and how AAA "factories" kill creativity.
There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) is proud to announce that Evan Wells, former Co-President of Naughty Dog and one of the most respected studio leaders in modern game development, will be honored with a prestigious Hall of Fame Award. Wells’ induction will take place at the 29th annual D.I.C.E. Awards on February 12, 2026, at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas. Neil Druckmann, a longtime collaborator from Naughty Dog, will present Wells with his Hall of Fame Award live at the ceremony.
Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us, is working on a new, unannounced game at Naughty Dog.
Wait I thought they cancelled a game? Or did they announce another project?

While I believe they CAN do it, I think they're too action oriented. I want Socom to go back to the way it was for it's level design. I miss stealth in games.
Hopefully Hitman: Absolution hasn't killed it's stealth because I really want to get that game.
I don't think they could pull off the tactical aspect of SOCOM
they can do it because every single game they TOUCH already is a great. a proven track record is a proven track record.
lol can you imagine the ridiculously out of place set pieces? I personally Naughty Dog should next go back to crash bandicoot, Damn activation...
while i love the uncharted's and think naughty dog is a great dev team i dont think they could pull off socom. it needs to be someone with military experience in gaming. i heard a rumour its guerilla games doing it anyhow and if true im happy enough although i'll always have a soft spot for zipper. shame what happened to them but thats what happens when you try to cater to casuals and miss the market because theyre to busy playing cod ( insert number here ).
