Catastrophe!

Scott from the D Pad D Bags is talking about talking Windows 8, and Gabe Newell’s opinion thereof. Valve’s beloved CEO had a few choice words for Microsoft’s next iteration of its flagship operating system at Casual Connect. “We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PCs, and OEMs who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.” Gaben said. And then the Internet exploded, but not, sadly, in a fun way that would’ve lead to good fodder for a weekly best-of-Twitter article.

can't wait for the RTM build to be leaked, August 1 here we go!

JBSleek5096d ago

What is his angle exactly? You call the biggest software platform catastrophic where I'm sure most of your sales arr and then back up an open platform which has failed to gain support and market share.

This guy seems to have no sensor with what he does and then a few years later he retracts his statements.

3GenGames5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Linux will probably be the choice for most gamers once it hits and games start to roll out for it. It's free, so you can dump the $200 from the Windows cost if you don't care about dual booting. It's more efficient over all, more secure, open source, FREE, everything. Calling Linux and their OS's a failure because 95% of people don't use it isn't right, because just 2 years ago, nobody used Chrome, and it follows the same principles. Plus, all servers already use Linux because of the fact it's so stable and efficient and secure. Even the almighty Apple run Linux servers, and have built their terribly priced and locked down OS's on the Linux kernel. And, the most popular phone OS (Android) also runs a *shocker* Linux kernel! Linux is everywhere, it's invading. Once the ball gets rolling with people using it on their desktop because they learn about it's existence, it will grow. It will grow quickly. And it will take over everything.

In less than 5 years, Linux will be giving Windows a run for it's money with program support. ESPECIALLY since most developers for said programs use a Linux based OS and will support it because they themselves use and love it. And in less than 10 year, I bet it will be a competitor in user percentage too. Remember I said this. And, I'm also posting this from a Linux OS.

"Calling Linux and their OS's a failure because 95% of people don't use it isn't right."
He didn't call Linux a failure. He said "and then back up an open platform which has failed to gain support and market share." Which is true.

JBSleek5096d ago

I don't even know where to begin because what you wrote was basically a future forecast and not a response to what I said.

I questioned his stance because as of know all his uses are just about using Windows so let's say Windows 8 is a success then he has no right to say what he did. It isn't business sense to call the largest platform bad.

Windows hasn't cost $200 in so many years so that is kinda irrelevent. And just because something is free doesn't mean people want it as the average consumer doesn't even know what Linux is. To have such a change as you said would mean people need to at least know what it is.

Chrome is a browser and not an OS so comparing the change in success to prove your point is pathetic.

I will remember you said it not really care what you said because you are emotional because you use Linux which is really annoying.

I can't question why Gabe is talking down the leader platform for software yet you can rave about how great it is and how in 10 years it will challenge Windows?

dcbronco5096d ago

Just read an article on Arstechnica. Windows 8 has a digital store built in. It would compete directly with Steam.

Sorry, couldn't hear you while you're bowing your head on your knees and delisting non-adult games that your master deemed they didn't like.

Christopher301d ago

Pretty much zero choice for them here. Do you want them to not be able to sell to a huge portion of the market because multiple sources of online payment deny them use?

thorstein300d ago

I understand what you're saying. There are alternatives to Mastercard.

But none of that negates what he did. Sure there's pressure, but he bent the knee.

Alos88300d ago

Man he's really lost a ton of weight, good on him.

anast300d ago

The guy is a videogame slumlord. Looks like is on Ozempic.

Michiel1989300d ago

if someone isn't terminally online on a gaming forum talking out of his ass like you are, you might actually get shit done in real life.

anast299d ago

I'm good here boss. I can post a comment and do other things. I' m surprised you haven't figured that out yet.

Michiel1989299d ago

casually making fun of someone's appearance while you're doing other things. What a class act.

tarot10300d ago (Edited 300d ago )

Yes, I'm sure the billionaire white male owner of the company who can close anyone's account really feels threatened.

Next tell me how brave Elon Musk is because he had to deal with someone telling him the Nazi's were actually the bad guys.

Christopher299d ago

Most people in power are narcissists who actually can't deal with this sort of thing like a normal person, let alone many gamers can't deal with it either. Either way, this is just a slice of life look at how even Gabe sucks at games and puts up with people who don't know how to be respectful to others.

AuraAbjure299d ago (Edited 299d ago )

That is sad to think you believe most people in power are significantly flawed in some way. In theory, the strongest and most successful of us are to be admired as inspirations rather than perceived as majorly flawed i.e. "narcissistic."

Christopher299d ago

***That is sad to think you believe most people in power are significantly flawed in some way.***

Common psychological tendencies. It's not sad, just science. And note that 'in power' means CEOs and the like, not just politicians.

Looks like Michael Douglas now...weird

I dont think hes nearly big enough for that joke.

mastershredder955d ago

Big deal. He has to give a deposition i. person wowie. He requested to it remotely because you CAN request this and this is common as F especially with heads from larger companies being involved. Next.

I am shocked Gabe is still with us. Absolutely expected a widowmaker heart attack to take him out years ago. He never took care of himself. Hope for the rest of us?

Jin_Sakai964d ago (Edited 964d ago )

Why bring this to anyone’s attention? It’s his life and he could outlive any of us for the matter.

Reminds me of a story where an old lady had two doctors tell here that if she didn’t quit drinking Dr. Pepper it was going to kill here. And she lived to tell the story of how she’s 104 years old and that both doctors had died.

RhinoGamer88964d ago

He is very wealthy and has not used that wealth for charity (that I know of) and has used it for excess. Also, he seems obstinate and defiant to the pleading and wishes of his fanbase. So not someone to hold up in super high esteem.

964d ago
Fist4achin964d ago

Was Dr Pepper one of their names?!

specialguest964d ago (Edited 964d ago )

@RhinoGamer88 - who the hell are you to say how he should use his wealth?? You don't know his personal life and what he's done. Not all good deeds are announced out loud to the world. Get off your high-horse. You don't have to be wealthy to give back, so what have you done to help the world?

Si-Fly964d ago

Do you make a point of letting everybody know you give to charity? I certainly don’t, it would be pretty gross. You have no idea about what Gabe does with his money, like you said.

shadowknight203964d ago

Your 1 of those people walking on the street with a surveillance camera showing you pass by while someone is getting robbed, just watching and moving along. You need help.

OtterX964d ago

Well it's staying true to its name, bc it's taking half my life to see a proper sequel.

Yui_Suzumiya963d ago

I'm gonna have to write that one down, lol

Godmars290964d ago

And yet even with multiple delays, nowadays there's no guarantee that a game will being functional.
