Realism - Does it Make Games Less Fun?

The Literate Noob writes - As games get more and more realistic, will high horsepower graphics engines, motion capture and photorealism force gameplay and original concepts to take a backseat? I say it can only make things better.

Realism works for me in certain type of games...If i'm playing a game that is promoted to be a military or racer sim then that's what the gameplay should offer.

PoSTedUP5047d ago

if i want realism im going to play realistic games. but i play and like all games and genres. GTA, harvest moon, persona, GT5/ motorstorm , cod/ operationFP, bejeweled, flower, savage moon etc.

and for instance. they added more realism to GTAIV opposed to GTAIII, i like them both and it wouldn't matter if it was vice versa.

Ares84HU5047d ago

Just like you said NYC_Gamer, realism works in some games but doesn't in others.

Can you imagine a realistic LBP or Crash Bandicoot? That would be interesting to see :D

But honestly, there isn't a single realistic game out there. As soon as a game will look exactly like what we see in real life with real physics, than it will be realistic.

In the mean time, I would use the term "strives to be realistic."

"But honestly, there isn't a single realistic game out there."

Ur right. Take GTA4 for example. No Eastern European man that I know can take 3 clips of an AK before dying.

No??????? Damn it, I was under the impression that I am able to do something like that. I mean, it was done in GTA so it must be true! Good thing I didn't got into a gun fight yet!! :D j/k

Yea i also like the realism of GTA but when a game becomes too realistic, it could be frustrating.

ape0075047d ago (Edited 5047d ago )

my take on this subject is that there are good realism and bad realism, let's take gta 4 for example

Good realism: immersive world, physics, golden quality, amazing car physics\damage model, animation, effects and overall cinematic \in your face feel of the action

bad realism: things that make the gameplay more frustrating, like getting shot while in car or in car jack animation, speed slow down when taking stair steps, the annoying animation when niko caught fire, things like that

gta 4 imo is one of the best games ever, i still play it to this day, don't get me wrong but there are a lot to improve in gta 4, i hope gta 5 ditch the bad aspects of realism while improving the good aspects of it and add a lot of stuff

TopDudeMan5047d ago

I can handle a bit of unrealism for the sake of just enjoying the game. It's the same with movies. If half of them were realistic then a lot of the greatest action scenes just wouldn't pan out.

WeskerChildReborned5047d ago

Realism is sometimes good but you don't wanna have a game be too realistic.

IaMs125047d ago

Make some games with realism and then make some that bend the rules.

I like to play games to relax and get away from this world for awhile, so sometimes i like being able to fly or jump 300 feet. Other times id like to experience what it would be like on a top secret military mission.

OhMyGandhi5047d ago

agreed.
It's not that realism kills the "fun factor" of today's games, it's that too many games think that realism makes a game more "grown up". It doesn't.
It's nice to have options, and that no developer should feel obligated to go realistic just for the sake of going realistic.
As gamers, we've become spoiled brats and have demanded visual perfection, and like obedient dogs, developers will make only want you want them to make..to make money.

It's this superficial sense of maturity that has caused a great divide in the industry, where society has deemed anything with a round edge "for small children", and anything with a pointy edge is meant for a "mature" audience.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman32d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
