PS2's Last Chance

The PS2 is an entrenched system with not much interesting coming out for it anymore. The time is right for small publishers to mine the system's foreign libraries for US release. Here're our picks for the quirkiest and coolest games to choose.

There are nearly 40 million PS2s in the United States. Top-shelf Triple-A products have all but abandoned the system, yet there remains an entrenched market for new PS2 games. Sony has relaxed restrictions on what can come out for its old workhorse, as evidenced by late 2D fighters like NeoGeo Battle Coliseum and inexplicable trash like Crazy Frog Arcade Racer.

The console won the last generation battle and now it's slowly fading away because of newer technology. There's nothing wrong with that.

It has nothing to prove anymore other than the "fact" it has got to be one of the greatest consoles ever created (because of its MASSIVE game library, I am not referring to the system hardware itself).

One of the greatest is an understatement. PS2 is the greatest game system created thus far. As long as there's madden, rock band, and guitar hero this system will sell a long time.

Ps2 was the greatest , the greatest is now a PS3 with BC, the sooner the ps2 install base jumps on board the sooner system wars is done for this generation.

By the time 2008 is done and KZ2,GT5,T6,FF13,FF13vs, and Resistance 2 is out. They wont be able to resist upgrading to PS3.

Interesting how a lot of these games got European release, but not in America.
Is there a link between that and how well the PS3 is do in Europe and Japan but not so much in US???
Its probably to do with the taste of each location that they decide what games to release where.

Playstation 2 was the greatest console ever and sales reflect this, this console has nothing to prove. There are lots of games I'd like to see released outside Japan. As for crap that was mentioned above just don't buy it.

bluetooth adaptor on USB and motion sensing controllers
go for it and compete with Wii
I think it has the power =)

Guwapo776680d ago

Now that would be interesting indeed. But the only problem I see with that is that if it'll work on the PS2...it'll work on the 60gig PS3. Not sure if Nintendo would go for that.

IMO, if Sony wanted, this little thing could live forever. Yeah, add blue tooth and DS3 (that alone should actually save money to have on controller for PS3 and PS2) and add WiFI. I wouldn't reject an eSATA adapter either (external optional HDD for things like PS2 download content and playstation store?), and downloadable firmware (online update, same like PSP). And eventually, when HD-TV saturation reaches 50%+, add a HW-scaler and HDMI. And keep the price around $99. Another 10+ years left, and making profit.

The good thing, if they cover the $100 segment with that machine which could actually make money, there won't be a need to drop the PS3 anywhere below $200, or even below $300 (bad for customers, good for Sony*). It might be way harder to have one machine covering the low and high end market and make the same amount of money.

Endless possibilities. Just a matter if they want or not, IMO.

*) I'd rather have not to much price pressure on the PS3 to keep up the quality of the machine - and, well, I like free PSN content.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle12d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
