Activision said Friday that Call of Duty 4 was the top-selling game of 2007, with unit sales of 7 million. But Microsoft said earlier this year that Halo 3 sold 8.1 million 2007… so who was on top?
A press announcement made rounds Friday, coming out of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Activision. The publisher trumpeted how Call of Duty 4, released in November 2007, has sold 7 million units worldwide, which makes it the "#1 Title in Units Worldwide for Calendar 2007." Activision cites figures from NPD Group, GfK Group and Chart Track.
But you may recall that Microsoft announced in early January that September's Halo 3 had sold 8.1 million units worldwide. So that would appear to be the top-selling title of '07, according to Microsoft anyway.
So which one was the top-seller?

Remakes of the campaigns featured in Xbox Game Studios' Halo 2 and Halo 3 are currently in development, according to a new rumor.
That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.
So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..
Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it
I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

In honour of PlayStation's 30th birthday yesterday in the US, data company Circana has dug out figures showing the top 20 best-selling PlayStation video games ever (date-range Jan 1995 to July 2025). Don't get too excited.
This is a great reminder of how game sales have become more concentrated in a smaller number of games/series over time. In the PS1/PS2 era a game was a success if it sold a million or a few million copies. The GTA games (3/Vice City/San Andreas) were pretty big outliers in selling as much as they did during the PS2 era. So in the minds of a lot of gamers something like FF VII feels like it was as big of a PS1 game as God of War 2018 was for PS4, but in reality far fewer people bought it (though it has obviously reached additional people through remasters, etc.).
What this says to me is, not many people are buying a PS to play PS exclusives. Like so many false narratives, like Xbox gamers don't buy games! It seems Playstation as a default system is a vanilla system to play call of duty, Minecraft, GTA games and a sports games.

A new Halo 3 mod turns the iconic Master Chief into a Pokémon % Master as functional Pokeballs come to the game.

Full animiation then a code change to make the target that comes out of the ball to be in the same class unsc not a easy thing to do.
Halo3 might have more sales but COD 4 > Halo 3 IMO.
how many copies of those halo were sold in the US?
hmm, worldwide, this could be tricky...i mean worldwide......?
Pretty impressive that Halo can compete with a proven franchise which was released on 4 different platforms
EDIT - the first time I read your comment it didn't make sense, and I won't read it again until you show the great continent of Canada some respect and capitalize it!
I don't think Call of Duty 5 will be able to outshine COD 4 since Treyarch is developing 5 and we all know who the better developer is when it comes to COD.
Homer or Marge?
Fox News or BBC?
Clinton or Obama?
Microsoft or Activision?
Halo 3 was a big DUD for Microsoft, they shipped roughly TWICE as many copies as they sold(4.2 million SOLD worldwide,8.1 million SHIPPED worldwide),HORRIBLE sales considering the popularity of the below AVERAGE game.
No wonder Robbie Bach is DUMPING his Xbox stock,a haha HA!
