for my pc if i can buy a 100GB thumb drive late of 2008.

if they slim it down 2 a size like the the ps2 ill buy another ps3

i rather have a disc then a harddrive all day!

I'm not a big fan of the multi-sku thing myself, but I see it as a temporary strategy. I predict one SKU within 2 years, by which time the console should be within $300.

im waiting for prices to drop abit before i buy one for my PC.

Problem is though, blank BD (25gb) cost £7 EACH!! although that will come down very quickly when the drives become the norm.

besides cost go down, what else does this improve.

Even a little speculation about how much this could cut costs on Blu-ray players and PS3. How much does it cost to manufacture now? Is it really that substantial of a development to get passed on to the consumer? Does this save the manufactures $20 or $200? A little vague on the actual impact.

Sony has been in the hardware industry for quite a long time and they have a lot of expertise. The thing which strikes me the most, is how they are able to lower the production cost of the system in one year.
If Sony are able to pull these things off, I bet we might see more innovation in terms hardware and etc.

got to hand it to sony, they took all the punches the media has to offer and are still standing strong.

i wish they saw that price was an issue way back when they said it doesn't.

well, thanks to sony now everyone know there's a limit to what people are willing to pay for a video game system, no matter how much it offers. a lesson learned the hard way.

A PS3 price drop would be fantastic.

I might be able to eventually justify the price of a new HDTV to play a PS3 on if the price drops below $250.

Also, nothing wrong with a good next-gen price war.

Wouldn't be shocked to see the PS3 at $299 and the 360 Arcade at $199 (Premium either at $250 or $299) by the end of the year.

This just keeps getting better 1 year later, and thing called PS3 is picking up incredible amount of steam, I feel a steam roll comong on in 2008. Too bad MS wont come out with a system at the same time as everyone else, so they can get slammed from the begging instead of being out with no comp and calling it a victory.

Sony is doing a good job on cutting down the costs of this things. I'm impressed.

it's funny to me how Sony was criticized for damn near *THREE YEARS (we've known Blu Ray was going to be in the PS3 way prior to the E3 price announcement) about the Blu Ray move, and now everyone is praising them and patting them on the back.

the term "fickle media" has never before been proved so apt than it has been during this console war.

Sony, so far, has been right about pretty much *EVERYTHING they've done with the PS3 so far:

HDMI standard across all units - right
HDD standard across all units - right
Free online - right
Compatibility with a wide array of devices from USB and Bluetooth mouse and keyboards, memory sticks, headsets, external HDDs, and internal HDDs - right
1080p games - right
Blu Ray built into all units - right

i mean, despite some stumbling blocks, Sony hasn't been the one constantly releasing add-ons to increase the functionality of their unit. most extras on the PS3 are simply a firmware update away. and at no extra charge.

the technology put into the PS3 was expensive at first, as most cutting edge technology is. the cool thing about extremely cutting edge technology, is that it tends to drop in price *VERY FAST. i don't know if this Blu Ray laser shrinking will lower the cost of the PS3, but i don't doubt it.

i said in another thread that i expected a $350 PS3 by the end of this year, but a $299 one is certainly possible as well. either way you slice it, this year is looking rather peachy for Sony and the PS3.

Now that they've reduced the cost of the diode this should drastically reduce the cost of production.

It was already announced a LONG while back that the BD discs themselves were already being made with a organic silver nitride rather than the synthetic coating which was driving up disc costs. So, now we have cheaper discs and cheaper players.

Also, would like to point out that the article i'm referring to regarding teh disc costs pointed out that the BD discs themselves can be produced at such a cheap rate that they almost match the cost of DVD production. Because of the organic process it doesn't require the corporate investments that was driving the R&D costs through the roof, or something like that.

Either way this is awesome news for the BDA and their supporters.
