Top Five Strategy Games

Jim from nagf writes "Strategy games have held a special place in the heart of gamers for decades, celebrated as some of the most creative and thought-provoking games of any genre. But while many other game types see constant releases, fans of strategy games are sometimes left waiting years for another solid entry in their favorite genre, creating a small pool of strategy games truly worth playing."

Advance Wars! I remember playing that game nonstop

Would seem like Chess would have to be the #1 strategy game of all time since it's been played for centuries.

Robotronfiend5038d ago

If we're using time played we'd also need to include Go. I'd rank those two on the same level.

Hard to chose just five, but that's a good list.

For me, I'd add XCOM: UFO Defense. That game took everything I had and laughed at me.

Chess probably wins out in Western gaming, but there's Go, Backgammon and Checkers before chess.

Or if you want to get really old... Senet... not that anyone knows what the rules are!!

I lol'ed at this list when I didn't see Valkyria Chronicles firmly placed at number one.

VC is a fantastic game, and probably in my top 10 list of faves, but not sure it's one of the top strategy games.

Most levels had a pretty limited way to complete them, and were more like puzzles than requiring in depth strategy planning, but the game was great fun and the story / characters were brilliant.

No XCOM?
No honourable mention for Disgaea?

I've recently been playing a helluva lot of strategy / board games on iPad. There's some absolute gems out there...

For anyone interested (unlikely on N4G at it's rather anti-Apple!!):
Reiner Knizia's Samurai
Ticket to Ride
Summoner wars
Call of Cthulu
Tigris & Euphrates
Assassins Creed Recollection
Defense of the Oasis

I really hope some strategy games make its way too the wii-U. I've only played like 4 strategy games but I do realise the skill it takes to be great at it.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit3d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing3d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster923d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
