Valve explain why they don't do platform exclusives, and advise developers to avoid them themselves
Half-Life and Portal writer Erik Wolpaw has detailed how his team has been using Generative AI for research and development at Valve.

Valve has responded to New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit against the firm, stating it does not believe that lootboxes in its Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 games unlawfully encourage minors to gamble, adding it was "disappointed" to see the action go ahead despite efforts to "educate" the NYAG about virtual items since "early 2023."
MS, Sony and Nintendo all use exclusives to help sell there system, it's how they try and draw people in and sell the console. Think about Nintendo, if Mario and Zelda went multiplatform that would kill a lot of Nintendo's market, people will choose the platform which plays and looks the best. Those are two big exclusives which can help move a system, you have the likes of Halo for Xbox and Uncharted for the PS3 in terms of the top dogs.
IF all these games were multiplatform what would the big three do to help sell there consoles? it would turn into a power race I.E this console has the best hardware etc, we are kind of starting to see that now with 360 hitting the entertainment market hard, claiming the 360 is best for home entertainment. God knows what NextGen will bring.
Back on Valve, I love Steam and Valve they have made a great service which continues to expand, I hope we can see some real integration into the NextGen consoles. It dosn't make sense for Valve to have exclusives, unless of course they want to compete with Origin (lol).
Valve sort of makes platform exclusives - you can't play any of their games on anything but Steam on PC. Also sounds like they learned from their mistake wrt the PS3.
So if they made a game and console A could run the game but console B couldn't they would dumb down both versions to make it run instead of just releasing it for console A. They are one of the very few developers who could do that and probably not loose any money since Valve make all there profits off Steam.
If thats the case why havent they released a L4D collection on the PS3 yet?
Exclusives help consoles sell...could you imagine if Uncharted 2 was multiplatform, it probably wouldn't of been that good since it would be stipped down so much to run on other consoles.
Idiotic bs. Console exclusives are good for gaming and gamers because the developers can focus on one console optimizing the game and harnessing that consoles power that other consoles might not have leading to awesomne gamessssss that wouldnt be possible on another system.
There have been examples of games being exclusive to one console in its inception and looking awesome and then the devs making it multiplat and watering it down and changing things to suit both consoles thus releasing a weaker product just to accommodate one console.
Systems have diff architecture and exceed in different things if you make games multiplat the games will suffer due to trying to accommodate all consoles and not harnessing the full potential of a console.
Uncharted 2 did wonders because it was an exclusive and got every last drop out of the ps3 and N.D. knew how to harness ps3 full capabilities had it been multiplat i have no doubt in my mind that game would have turned out different.
Valve wants everyone to be able to enjoy their games
