XCOM Enemy Unknown: Will It Live Up To The Original

XCOM was a much loved sci-fi strategy game that was first released back in 1994. This really is not just a reboot, but more of a re-imagining. 2K games is actually working on two games under the XCOM name, but they are both set in different universes. The other XCOM game is just a first person shooter, and nothing like the 1994 strategy game. When this first person shooter was first announced it was greeted with outrage by fans of XCOM. Along side that however is XCOM: Enemy Unknown which is aiming to keep fans of the original game very happy indeed.

Yes...

Imo the ONLY thing that will hurt this game is the 6 units per squad. If fans of the original game can get passed the smaller squad sizes, then they'll be in for a treat.

I am pretty sure the squad size change, while notable, wont really impact fans of the old game given all the enhancements that have come to this game while staying true to most of the original charms of the game.

I don't know.

One of the main draws of the first game was having enough squad members per mission so that you could afford to sacrifice a few for the greater good.

Only six members means that you can only take your best and brightest per mission and only your best and brightest can die.

Squad sizes played a huge part in the original X-Com because you needed disposal soldiers. This either has to be offset with easier combat missions or...I don't know what the second offset could be to compensate for lower squad numbers.

My gut feeling is that they are gonna mess up this remake.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Emilio, mr mike, thanks for the heads up.

Forgot to add PS3 and PC. I'm getting this on PC for sure.

I sincerely hope this game does not disappoint.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183949d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
