Dark Souls: Top 8 Boss Fights

WC writes: In light of how the PC version of Dark Souls is releasing in August accompanied by new content, most notably new bosses, I thought it would be nice to take a look back at the original game that released on consoles. No doubt Dark Souls was a contender for many as their Game of the Year of 2011, a big reason for that being the numerous boss battles that take place in Lordran.

In this list we look at the top 8 bosses of Dark Souls. Why 8? Because 8 will more or less represent the top one third of boss battles in the game, providing a good take on battles whilst not diluting the list. I should also note how I came up with this list, which was by taking into account a variety of factors. This list is based on an overall account of bosses, which means I’m not solely basing it on difficulty, but including other elements like atmosphere, battle progression and pure fun amongst others. I’ll make mention of these aspects as we go along.

Surprised Moonlight Butterfly isn't in there. A very unique experience overall with that one.

That was a beautiful battle the first time around, I really enjoyed the music and atmosphere, and the boss itself has a beautiful name. It's kind of an afterthought to most people, but I enjoy the creature itself, very elegant. It's very easy of course, but that doesn't really matter.

Oddly moonlight butterfly gave me much more trouble than either the capra demon or the gaping dragon. It certainly was the boss fight that stands out most to me so far though.

Have only just started replaying but seem to be getting further this time.

NG+ Moonlight Butterfly is much much harder, but yea, amazing atmosphere and music. Plus the path leading to the battle itself is also a thing of beauty, love the darkroot forest.

@limewax bow and arrows are your friends :) makes a lot of things sooooo much simpler. Doesn't add a lot of weight either so you can switch between your main weapon and a bow quickly and easily.

I totally agree that the Moonlight Butterfly is an underrated and oft forgotten gem from Dark Souls.

The first time around that butterfly totally brutalized me, lol. 2nd time thru I didn't even need to actually fight the Moonlight Butterfly because I knew about the NPC witch that would help me. She absolutely wrecked that butterfly. I barely even needed to dodge.

Ornstein and Smough are my favorite boss fight of any game, period. That one was just epic.

I thought the bell gargoyles and the gaping dragon were pretty cool fights. The gaping dragon fight was prob the easiest in the game but it was fun in my opinion.

i loved the bell gargoyles and i really liked the gaping dragon, basically i agree with imputed, plus i like the stray demon!

Like it or not, its time to admit Dark Souls is a horror game

Before Elden Ring and Bloodborne, FromSoftware's talents for all things creepy and chilling gave Dark Souls an atmosphere unlike any other.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake219d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
