Speculation: Wii U's GPU based on AMD Radeon E6760

NG: As many of you know, just a few days ago I posted a story that confirmed that the specs of the Wii U dev kit that was leaked earlier last month were true. What maybe was not made clear enough in that post was that those specs were from a dev kit from late last year and some of the things were to change. It is nice though that we can at least confirm what developers were using at the time.

Now, some things have happened over the last few months while Nintendo has prepared the final dev kits to be mass produced for the Wii U. Back in March Nintendo signed a deal with Green Hills Software, the largest independent vendor of embedded software solutions. The Wii U will be using Green Hills Software's MULTI integrated development environment to maximum reliability, maximum performance, and minimum code size.

that's a pretty powerful GPU to be running only 720p/30fps games and that's why I doubt it.

OneAboveAll5072d ago

Exactly. Why have a powerful GPU like that and dumb down your games? Unless... the rest of the system can't keep up. lololol

PopRocks3595072d ago

When did any console make full use of its tech at launch?

Call of Duty 2 vs. Gears of War 3 or even Halo 4.

tee_bag2425072d ago

@ PopRocks359

True but its not that hard to get the Res/Fps about right for the multiplatforms at the least.

victorGma215072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

@wishingW3L
WiiU can run 1080p without any problems, it was confirmed at 2011's E3. Even THQ said:
-THQ: “WiiU is just alot more powerful than current HD consoles it does 1080p very easy.”

Just because launch games will be 720p it doesn't mean the system doesn't support 1080p. Even Nintendo's official website confirmed it.

It's normal for launch games.

@OneAboveAll
Pikmin 3 was a Wii game until last year and all the rest is launch multiplatform games. We can't expect to see a huge improvement now.

jetlian5072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

poprock your wrong. Actually launch games usually have higher res than newer games. Tho the new games look better. Which goes to show res doesn't make a game look better (within limits)

Maybe because it's to power the multiple controllers, hm?

shackdaddy5072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

720p/60fps with a 420p extra screen*

Still, I'm a bit doubtful about this rumor...

StraightedgeSES5072d ago

That only happens when it uses 2 pads

ChickeyCantor5072d ago

It's also rendering a buffer to the Wiipad remember?

donman15072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

What is wrong with common sense with people. Having a powerful GPU does not mean you must always max it out (all games being 1080p). Plus most of the games from 3rd party that will be in the launch window are games also coming to 360/PS3 that were already in development for those other platform (ports which are based of the current gen limitations).

Games built from the ground up for the Wii U will showcase what the CPU/GPU can really do. I cannot wait to see what Retro is working on.

Qrphe5072d ago

True, specially if they were execting to make it affordable with that controller, video card and to still make a profit to out of it.

yabhero5072d ago

It's 720p 60 FPS when the Pro controller or WiiU pad isn't used.

kakashishinoda5072d ago

nintendo said that the launch games only will run on 720p but after a time it will run at 1080p/30-60fps

Technical World5072d ago

Yes, but that's the launch games. I can't see into the future to see if they're telling the truth but Nintendo did say eventually games will run at 1080p not 720p. And some games are already running at 60fps.

DeadlyFire5071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

Well. If I were Nintendo and this was my direction aiming for 1 Tflop or so. I would aim for the 6950M GPU. Runs at 50 TDP with 1.1 Tflop performance. Slightly better than the 4850 with all of the new features. 35 TDP just sounds like no effort for graphics to me. 50 sounds decent. If not the 6950M then maybe the 6850M. Which also is at 1Tflop.

corrus5072d ago

I don't believe that's BS

metroid325072d ago

Its a HD E6760 but its been modified to run at 1 terraflop and by the way most games at E3 will be 1080p on release.

ChickeyCantor5072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

I love it,

He literally says he doesn't believe it is BS. Not that he doesn't believe the rumor. But he meant the latter.

LOL.

legend9115072d ago

We won't know because there is a lack of grammar.

FinalomegaS5072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

Corrus,

seriously... are you feeling well?

I had to check your Tweeter out because I really thought you were a bot account posting the same negative nonsense each time. Excuse me, i'm sorry The gang on here don't understand that you're really a blind space cadet that don't understand video games.

I would love to see your side, why don't you believe this? For F' sakes you can even PM me to spare everyone the extra posting space taken up.

I might be able to make you understand fact from fiction. I can help (IGA = Ignorant Gamer Anonymous)

samtheseed5072d ago

Lol, you don't even know what it means, you thought it just sounded good and thought you'd troll it... What is wrong with your head?

DivineAssault 5072d ago

let the ninny fans dream & hope dude.. when reality smacks em in the face, then they can sit there & say "oh it just hasnt came yet or the devs are being lazy".. even if wii u miraculously was MORE powerful than PS4/720 it wouldnt matter if the software isnt there.. Plus mii verse is no xbl or psn & never will be.. Lastly i only have ONE word to say regarding any damn wii u vs ps4 debates... "GAIKAI" it renders all the power wii u can ever dream of having useless... PS4 will have physical, digital, & streaming media that smokes wii u in every way.. music, movies, & most importantly games.. wii u cant hope to compete with that

omarzy5072d ago

"PS4 will have physical, digital, & streaming media that smokes wii u in every way.. music, movies, & most importantly games.. wii u cant hope to compete with that" Didn't the wii, DS, and 3ds all beat the sony products that did all those things? But what do sales mean right?

DivineAssault 5072d ago

ya cuz sales determine whether something is fun or not.. i guess u ran out to buy tickle me elmo too just cuz all the other kids had it.. i go where i feel the best diversity is at & thats sony.. I dont follow crowds of casuals in the wiis case cuz wii sports is the THING to have.. Or the DS cuz the new pokemon is super awesome!

Salamander5072d ago

I dont understand why everyones getting antsy? Corrus doesent believe that this is BS, he is a true Nintendo fan. Sorry Corrus i dissagreed with you since i misread your comment. My bad.

frelyler5072d ago

Why all the secrecy? Tell me what to expect so I can decide if I want to invest and start saving. It's very telling that they just won't come out with it, unless it's not decided at this point, but that can't be with the release window given.

house5072d ago

exctly why e3 was a turn off for me for nintendo i wanted to get a wii u but they did everything possible to convince me not to

123_3215072d ago

It damn well better be powerful or Nintendo can stick it up their collective ass.

AO1JMM5072d ago (Edited 5072d ago )

Just more speculation.

I am waiting for the the YouTube video of the disassembly after launch.

How much does this chip cost is bulk? That right there is the most likely reason (if true) that Nintendo would use this chip.

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.

Interview: Patricia Summersett on voicing Princess Zelda for nearly a decade

Believe it not, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is almost ten years old.
