Microsoft, Dell looking for some Red ink

Cnet News reports: "Microsoft and Dell are seeing Red. The two companies planned to announce on Friday that they were teaming up to offer three (Product) Red PCs, supporting the charitable effort that benefits women and children affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa. However, their news dribbled out early, after the New York Times' John Markoff mentioned the plans on the paper's Davos blog.

Dell plans to slather its all-in-one desktop PC, the XPS One, in red. The two are also teaming up on Red versions of the XPS M1330 and XPS 1530 notebooks, which, should be noted, were already available in red paint. The difference will be a special version of the operating system.

The PC is Red on the inside, too, with a special edition of Windows Vista Ultimate edition that includes specially themed desktop wallpaper and sidebar gadgets.

The move is a personal victory for Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, who has been a big proponent of (Product) Red, but it has been Apple that has been first to the market with its (Product) Red iPods. Gates told CNET News.com at last year's CES that he was trying to get his company on board with the effort."

Good stuff, nice to see some huge companies trying to help someone but themselves for a change...

would of been better off supportting their lower end systems, the XPS is seriously over priced.

So 5% of my call charges go to the charity.

Its a great idea.

akaFullMetal6723d ago

great idea, i just really hope that all of the proceeds really do go to helping fight aids and hiv.

Sony would never do something like this

BrianC62346723d ago (Edited 6723d ago )

You're an idiot. I bet you don't give one cent to charity.

By the way, I just did a search on Google for Sony charity and Sony does plenty for charity. Just because you don't see anything about it doesn't mean they don't do it. Most charity work is done with no mention. How much money did you give last year?

I agree with you BRIANC6234.

Also in addition, Sony's console runs the Folding@Home app which helps cancer research and the PS3 has boosted the project more than any other device able to run the program. BTW it also helped F@H reach it's goal of one petaflop. This is a quote from Stanfords website:

"With these computational advances, coupled with new simulation methodologies to harness these advances, we will be able to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, and make even greater impacts on our knowledge of folding and folding related diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Huntington's Disease, and certain forms of cancer."

So don't say Sony isn't doing this to help either.

WilliamRLBaker6722d ago

Folding at home COSTS THEM NOTHING nothing at all, and guess what...folding@home has been around long before ps3 was around and yet no cures for cancer have been found...nothing...hmmmmm

no cures have been found with ps3 being part of the effort either....hmmmm

Show me sony paying out money to charitities...ect and you have a point till then folding@home is not charity its a publicity stunt.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing51d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit51d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing51d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
