Compared to

50 dollar/euro/pounds for a Wii game and

50 to 60 dollar/euro/pounds for a 360 game (and even some like Testdrive Unlimited and Rockstar Table Tennis, both great next gen games for 40 bucks or below even)

Sony is going to fail so hard just only die hard fanboys will buy it. Other people and parents that buy it for their childeren will look further then the shiny case and say:

"Damn! First of 33% more expensive then the other next gen console, then no component/HDMI cable included another 50 dollars, they're 66% more expensive then the Wii, and on top of that the online service is unknown AND the games will be around 20 to 30 bucks more expensive per game??? Exit Sony!"

its not looking good for sony! i still hope the ps3 will worth it,honestly,i doubt about that but it would be good for gaming,and i want to buy the ps3 went they'll drop the price! if it fails,microsoft will be alone (since nintendo is for younger gamers) and it cannot be good for the gaming industry!

The article (this was also over at ign, by the way)goes on to say that the 20 gig version will be the one they lean towards, perhaps eventually going to a single sku.

What do you guys think about that? For Sony I think this would be a good idea, they could sell wifi and larger hard drives separately, it would help cushion costs.

If DVD-9 based games sell for $60, then how can you sell a media that is more expensive to produce for the same price?

Blu-Ray movies cost $40! DVD movies cost no more than $20.

Many of these manufacturer's rely on software sales to make up for hardware losses. So there is an obvious markup on software. But how much of a profit will you pull in if you sell Blu-Ray based software for $60?

I don't know. I just look at the facts and if they sell Blu-Ray games for the same price as a DVD-9 game, the profits won't be as large.

Japanese exchange rates don't determine cost in the US market, or any other market! Games will be competetively priced. And you people who say that I can't just assume that are hypocrites because you're assuming that somehow the status quo pricing will change based on rumor and speculation.

2-3 months from now if the games are about $60 a piece here in the states then it won't matter much. We often do forget that, in other areas of the world, it's never the same case with pricing. If manufacturing cost for Blue-ray disc is higher, plus given the high development cost I wouldn't doubt these prices.

Paying $70-$90 a game is Fn Crazy I tell you. Thats almost $100 doallars when you shoul dbe able to get 2 games for that price. Like I said ,people keep comparing this era of consoles and prices to the old and say not much have changed in terms of prices and inflation, well ofcourse not much have changes.

Comsumers Fn "paychecks" have not changed either. While gas prices and housing has skyrocketed. Who needs a console when you can't barly aford a game for it. Atleast for some people I'm sure will be able to buy only 4 games a year. In a way its like "buying a nice car and can't afford the gas." whats the point, I rather be practical.

I would count on it being cheaper in america than it is in Japan. The $499 version of the PS3 cost a comparative $513 in Japan before the price drop. So if the Japanese are getting a comparative $75-$80, logic says you'll be charged less in America. Personally I don't think Sony are dumb enough to charge $80 for a game.

Let's not forget that the PS3 is region-free. That's going to have an impact as well, putting strains on retailers to keep prices fairly close across regions. Oh, and Kaz himself has hinted at the possibility of games on the PS3 costing more than $59.99...

If this indeed is true which i doubt it is there goes Sony. Not a lot of people will pay that much for a game. Money has never been a problem for me but if this is true even i might have a hard time paying 85 bucks for a game.

on NOV 27 1997 i Brought a Import version of X-Men VS, Streetfight for $74.00 us for the Sega saturn (It came with a 4 Meg Ram cart.)
and that would be the last time i pay more than $59.99 for a games. Super Nintendo games was $69.99 and Genesis was $59.99 cause carts was expensive to manufacture but CD's are cheaper so the extra money has to go to The Blu-Ray discs and the more man-hour that goes into production cost to develop for a Non- User friendly workstation.

I want a PS3, but I'm not willing to shell out $500 and then over $60 for a game. I've never payed more than 50.00 bucks for a game, even when i was buying N64 and Dreamcast.

For the extra money your paying, you better be getting a whole lot of extra game, not just shiny textures and such.

the higher priced games I am not so sure on, but the addition of HDMI on the 20 GB version and the cost reduction in Japan do make me believe that Sony will make more 20GB to make it look like the PS3 is only a hundred more dollars and includes Blu-Ray over the premium Xbox 360, and I think the 60 GB will be smaller quantities for only the hardcore gamer, it cuts some production costs and makes it more appealing to the masses

I can tell that nobody on this board is a certified "old skool" gamer. I remember getting the atari 2600 in 1979 for Christmas and I remember it costing almost $200 after tax. Today that would be around $450. Every Atari game was at least $50 if not more and adjusted for inflation, that was about $100 in 1970's/1980's money. This is not a defense of Sony as I think they are going to price themselves out of business both with the console and the games. Honestly I think the console is definately worth $600 for the "real" PS3, but will the games be worth it paying that $600?

The problem is the consumer has gotten used to paying $50-60 bucks for games forever. The problem is that although the high outlay expense for cartridges no longer applies, the cost of development has far eclipsed that cost; $50 bucks ain't worth jack in a 2006/2007 economy.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
