DayZ: Just another mod or something more?

DayZ is a paradox. It is a game unlike any other yet it feels so familiar that it is a wonder how no one has executed the concept with such panache. The open-world zombie mod for ArmA II is the brainchild of Dean “Rocket” Hall, a programmer who, conveniently enough, works for ArmA II developers Bohemia Interactive. The mod has grown exponentially in the past few months with many declaring it one of the most successful mods of all time. It has even propelled ArmA II to the top of the Steam sales and its lifetime sales have skyrocketed almost solely because of this mod.

Not sure what people see in this mod. It might actually be good if it were using a better more stable game engine. The fact it's using the Arma 2 engine is enough to turn me away from it.

Arma 2 isn't known for it's smooth animations and character movement.

If this were to become a stand alone game using a better engine it could be really good though.

I'm going to take a guess and say you havn't played Dayz.

Want to see what all the fuss is about? Play it. It's amazing.

Agree with Allc4t, please don't trash talk Arma 2 and use that as an excuse to justify why you won't or haven't played a wonderful mod. Armas engine is not the best for some little things but it is in no way unplayable or horrible.

It is a fantastic mod and gives the gamers an experience that has yet to be made or delivered from a game.

1. Look at my Avatar
2. You haven't played Arma 2 (at least not on a capable PC cause the Virtual Reality Engine 3 is great for being over 3 years old )
3. You haven't played Day Z
4. Look at my Avatar again

Now I've got over 300 hours in Arma II and over 150 hours in Day Z so when I say I know what I'm talking about (points to my Avatar) I know what I'm talking about.

Day Z could easily be GOTY right now!!! It's the best Survival Horror game EVER with or without Zombies.

225 square KM of OPEN World to explore, you gotta hunt for food, find fire wood to cook the food, eat, drink, rest, and find everything you need to SURVIVE in a 24 hour day night cycle with hundreds of Zombies and gamers all doing things in REAL Time with NO LOAD SCREENS!!

If you die, it's PERMA-DEATH meaning Game Over, lose all your stuff and position and start over back in Cherno or Electro with just a flashlight!

Hell you even gotta find, fix, and maintain auto parts if you wanna cruise around smashing zombies in your grill but be careful not to bust your radiator or find yourself trading food, ammo, weapons, and firewood for auto parts.

get attacked to many times by Zombies and you will get INFECTED. Hope you didn't drop the medicine to make room for ammo cause your gonna need it if you don't want to infect your clan. Who in turn may just head shot you and take your Winchester instead of dealing with your sick arse!! (No time to babysit infected who are hogging the water and need to rest more especially at night when the fire the infected need for heat will give off your clans position to Bandits who are looking to rob you).

Day Z is video gaming at it's best right now and you have the nerve to talk about animations, LOL Please! Arma II offers near Photo realistic graphics, great physics, and good animations. Next Gen consoles will strive to look like Arma II.

Sure you may not like the Day Z genre but no one who has ACTUALLY played it can say anything negative about cause Day Z is EVOLUTIONARY in a Gen of carbon copy MMO's and generic FPS!

Rant over cause i got DAy Z running in my other screens and me and my team are about to rob some Russians for their helicopter parts.

Help me to run Arma 2, AO, and DayZ better!

I have:

Phenom ii x4 955 @ 3.2ghz

7970 3gb 1125/1575

8GB DDR3 @ 1333

1tb @ 7200rpm

Dayz with very high everything except for no AA, no post process, 1000m distance, 1920x1080, low terrain detail.

those settings get me an average of 35 FPS. WTF?

In Arrowhead in campaign mission 1, its pretty much a slide show.

In Arrowhead Armory mode, a great constant 90+fps. WTF?

This games performance is incredibly frustrating and varied.

PM me if your out of bubbles..

Ati..

I play DayZ, despite what you say and how brilliant you make it sound.

And it is brilliant by the way! it is extremely buggy, the mod developers even tell you it's not worth paying for ARMA 2:CO/OA just for DayZ because of how buggy i is currently.

OneAboveAll5077d ago

Doesn't change the fact that is your opinion and mine still stands. I'v played both and I still hate it because I find the game to look like shit even at max compared to the likes of other games with better engines.

Photo-realistic graphics? lolwut?

xAlmostPro5078d ago

The mod is pretty buggy.

The use of Arma 2 though is 1) because mod support is fantastic and 2) it has realistic physics which allow for a more 'life like' experience in DayZ which is the main aspect of the mod.

peowpeow5077d ago

I'm reluctant to drop $30 for a mod that's in alpha stage, I've played it a bit and it can be buggy.

Other than that, I can vouch for this mod being brilliant! It's quite difficult if you play alone and can't find loot/weaponry for hours (that's unlucky)

Coach_McGuirk5077d ago

I sincerely hope it's a sign of things to come. DayZ has scratched my years-long itch for something new & exciting in video games.

DayZ Frostline DLC Gets Review Bombed; Dev Says “No One is Forcing Players to Buy It”

DayZ Frostline DLC gets review-bombed for its price and content. Dev responds, saying "No one is forcing players to buy it."

diana45peters540d ago

Yes, I saw that! The DayZ Frostline DLC has indeed faced a lot of backlash from players who feel that the $26.99 price tag is too high for what's included. The DLC adds a new snow-covered map called Sakhal, but many players feel it doesn't offer enough new content to justify the cost.

Bohemia Interactive's CEO, Marek Spanel, responded to the criticism by pointing out that the studio has received very little revenue per hour of gameplay from the game over the years. He even referenced the Beatles song "Please Please Me" in his response, highlighting the frustration with the situation.

It's definitely a heated debate.
