Is Grand Theft Auto Still Relevant?

Rockstar Games is one of the most recognized studios in the gaming industry, and for good reason. Throughout the years, Rockstar has continued to push the limits of video games, both in terms of technical advancements and controversial content, and has always managed to break new ground in storytelling and realism. The studio’s most recent success is Max Payne 3, which released to critical acclaim and has sold very well commercially.

Then I would say it's relevant.
I've never played a GTA game but I can feel its effects across the industry.
And I am happy that a franchise like it is around.
Een if it has some bad games, in its future, it is always good to have games like this that push gaming content toward Cinematic maturity.

Maturity that goes beyond Boobies, Fart jokes, and Blood.

Elimin85080d ago

Release it and you'll see.

HammadTheBeast5080d ago

You should play it. San Andreas would be a good place to start along with GTA 4, but the classics might be a bit particular to tastes.

JoySticksFTW5080d ago

I actually wasn't a huge GTA IV fan, but the DLC is fun and better than the main game in my opinion.

I'm one of those that didn't like GTA IV's more serious tone, but the game is definitely still relevant.

jeseth5080d ago

Still love GTA. I would really love to see another Vice City.
Show up in Vice City with Vercetti in charge and have to take out what he built up. It would be awesome, love the time era ... music, clothes, cheesy hair and jewelry, and cars. The 80's are just an awesome decade to prtray.

Oh, and add create a character already! Still, GTA is awesome, I'm glad they don't release annual games and ruin their production with over saturation.

orange-skittle5080d ago

would say San Andreas was the best in the series. I guess thats why everyone loved Ballad of Gay Tony.

I didn't play any of the previous 3D GTA's from the previous gen, so I only judged the game on what it was now and what I saw and played.

But to me, I loved the characters, I loved the story, the dialog, I loved the gameplay, and I love how the game made me feel like I was in New York. From the billboards, the radio ads, TV shows, to the way the pedestrians act and respond......No other game this generation has had that kind of attention to detail with modern day urban large scale city representation. The city felt like it was alive.

And then the online was kick butt too (GTA RACE was freakin awesome).

I can't wait for GTA5, and I hope they give me more of the same....but bigger and more of it.

--my take

Adityac5080d ago

GTA RACE IS JUST SO SEXY!

EVILDEAD3605080d ago

Played them all and GTA4 got so much unnecessary hate it was laughable. But most of the people whining literaly admitted to playing a small fraction of the game.

Then the DLC still ranks about many games out there now.

GTA 5 is going to stop the gaming world to a screeching halt..I'd say that's relavant.

^^^ But GTA4 lose so much what GTA:SA had, I loved breaking in2 peoples house, hooking up my ride, recruiting my fellow gang members to ride on some "Mark ass tricks" lol. It's getting stale IMO, that's probably why I'm anticipating AGENT so much, but I most confuse I will have it probably day2(work graveyard shift)

HSx95079d ago

I still play GTA to this day! GTA RACE is one of my favorite game modes along with Free Mode.

Is this headline a joke? When a game wins awards for not being at the show, because people wanted to see it. When people did through another game to find "easter eggs". when people look at the first trailer to look for hints of when the next trailer will come out. When people do not believe the developer when they said they would not be at e3, and then go into each conference praying that the words Grand Theft Auto 5 come up. When the name alone makes non gamers want to pick up the controller again....

Yeah, I think its safe to assume the name Grand Theft Auto is relevant

ATi_Elite5080d ago

Do Hookers still exist?

As long as we have Guns Drugs and Hookers GTA will be relevant.

Can't wait for GTAV........and the new batch of Hookers!

koh5080d ago

I know, I'm actually starting to worry that I'm close to killing every hooker in Liberty City... I need a fresh batch.

Awesome_Gamer5080d ago

Just look at the N4G front page..

awi59515080d ago

I found the last one borring they got too far from their roots. I enjoyed saints row 3 better and i was a huge GTA 3 and vice city fan.

I think this question is irrelevant.

Crazyglues5080d ago (Edited 5080d ago )

Yeah I agree, because at least here anyway GTA V is Like the most anticipated game so of course it's relevant.

-Ever time a story pops up about anything to do with GTA it's in the top stories in about two minutes... (seems to be pretty relevant if you ask me)

You can answer this question simply by looking at the front page of N4G daily.

Yes, yes it is.

vortis5080d ago

lol, I know right?

Also, look at the modding community...other than DayZ the only other game with mainstream mod recognition is GTA IV. Who in the core community hasn't had a whiff of iCEnhancer yet? Everyone knows about it now and it's become the new Crysis for benchmark standards in video game photorealism.

More than anything, GTA has proven to be more relevant than all those other cookie-cutter games media shoves down our throat to pretend to be relevant (I guarantee you, five years from now GTA IV and GTA V will still have a strong modding community but Black Ops 2 won't even be discussed on most forums).

OneAboveAll5080d ago (Edited 5080d ago )

Just ask the millions who buy the titles when they come out. Yea it is, there are no other games out there like GTA except for Saints Row and it's not even that good of a series.

HammadTheBeast5080d ago

Honestly, you can't compare the two after Saints Row 3. It went for the over-the-top feel while GTA settles for semi-realistic fun. The closest GTA is to Saints Row is with the Ballad of Gay Tony DLC.

milohighclub5080d ago

I loved saints row 1&2 but 3 was wank...

Tonester9255080d ago

Yes! I can't wait to play the Online also. I can't wait for another trailer and release date

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman35d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
