Epic exec eager to support Microsoft Surface tablet with Unreal Engine

CVG writes: Mark Rein, the man who spearheads the Unreal Engine licensing operation, was unreserved in his praise of the new Microsoft slate.

"Microsoft NAILS IT," he said on his personal Twitter account. "Surface looks AWESOME! Can't wait to get some Unreal Engine games on those babies!" he added.

I'm buying one and plus its powered by Nvidia

darthv725061d ago

that eventually there would be some type of game related information regarding this new tablet.

Seems only obvious that it will get a slew of games ported to it from other devices as well as its own dedicate games.

Question is...will MS stick to their own design (like apple) or will they license the OS to other vendors (like droid)?

NYC_Gamer5061d ago

MS should license the OS out to other vendors for extra profit

nukeitall5061d ago

@darthv72:

Windows 8 is licensed to everyone and their mother if you pony up. We are still getting slates from Asus, HP, Dell, and the likes so I'm not sure I follow you?

Surface is likely to get the proper push as 3rd party hardware manufacturers aren't stepping up and creating Apple like quality products. The Surface just looks so beautiful and apparently it is not a fingerprint magnet!

This is the first serious tablet commpetitor to Apple's iPad. Wonder what magic Apple will pull out of their hat with iPad 4.

darthv725061d ago

sorry about that. I was meaning that if MS were to be the only ones making these tablets then they would be like Apple. yet we know MS isnt a hardware company so the licensing of the OS to other tablet makers seems more likely.

I wonder if they will enforce some type of standard as far as the hardware goes? Yes the OS could probably run on any hardware but to ensure it is running at its best there would have to be some standards for the screen type and cpu/gpu/memory.

droid tablets are available from the cheap no name brands to the more expensive well known brands. That kind of diversity is something the PC world has had for years with windows so unless MS decides to just let it be the same for tablets I would assume they will hold some high regard to who makes one and with what hardware.

That is, if they want to set these in a class of higher standards.

KMCROC545061d ago

Think they will license ,but those other device will not get all features or whatever else MS decide to keep to make thier tablet the better deal.

nukeitall5061d ago

@darthv72:

ah, I get it now since I put NYC_Gamer comment with yours.

It wouldn't make sense to license hardware away, because the production cost likely wouldn't go down especially when it is divided over multiple manufacturers. Wholesale works better with one vendor with a huge order.

Third party manufacturers likely would want to separate their product and uniqify it. This will just up their game and potentially make a few upset in the short term. This might be mitigated with a high price tag, but I hope not! I want one!

More likely, third party vendors will steal some ideas and MS wouldn't do jack squat about it since they don't want to upset partners.

If anything, I expected Surface to be made by Nokia, but that doesn't look likely now.

I imagine Windows 8 (RT) is compatible with a wide range of devices, but I think it has pretty fixed resolution demands.

Surface supporting a MS Xbox 360 controller would be awesome!

darthv725061d ago

there will be an app for that.

Wikkid6665061d ago

No app needed.... You can only use the wired controllers. Just plug it in and it will install the drivers.

Axonometri5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

I might skip upgrading PC and move straight to Surface. Epic making push for this device would help seal the deal. I would just hope tactile devices, controllers and the like would be supported also.

Gridloc5061d ago

No pricing, no release date? Late to the party will be the factor for failure for these tablets. No real innovation just more of Microsoft's need to copy apple and google for future market share. Good luck MS...

BrutallyBlunt5061d ago

They will need it, Apple completely dominates the field.

slutface5061d ago

lol a gimmicky tablet with a gimmicky keyboard. this seems dead out of the gate.

I wonder how many said those same words when the IPad was first announced?

christocolus3491d ago

cant wait to play it for myself.

Kribwalker3491d ago

Yeah, mine is the same on Xbox and PS4 as my user name here. Always looking to add to my friends list on there

OpieWinston3491d ago

Early Access Friday... I may not have those days off but I'm bolting out of working and my Gears buds and I are going to cut some grubs up. Or massacre COG.

XXanderXX3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

Then I suggest a change of Scenery like say Vancouver, Canada at Coalition studios .

Festano3491d ago

I think they worked closely, it's the first AAA Unreal Engine 4 after all.

Epic Games Mark Rein on Fortnite “We announced it too early”

"Years ago Cliff Bleszinski stood on stage and announced a new Xbox one exclusive title called Fortnite. However, we haven’t heard anything about the title until the final day of this year’s E3. In a conversation with Marc Rein on the final day of the event. When he was asked about Fortnite he stated" GamerFitnation

Gears of War is a first person franchise?

spicelicka3962d ago

Lol this guy has NO idea what he's talking about. Gears of war is not a first person franchise, and Fortnite was not announced as an Xbox One exclusive, it wasn't even announced for any consoles in fact.

Neonridr3962d ago

yeah I kind of lost all faith in the writer when he said that.. :P

_-EDMIX-_3962d ago

Oh....oh lord. I see anything get approved by N4G. The question is, what doesn't get approved?

Baka-akaB3962d ago

Yeah something sounds iffy here , they always insisted that Fortnite couldnt run on consoles back then , and that it was a lovechild for the pc community anyway , for the foreseeable future

BLACKBIBLE3962d ago

Fortnite is is being developed for PC but is open to being on other consoles. Fortnite.com states it.

_-EDMIX-_3961d ago

@Blackbible- what facepalm? Why mad? Bud, just admit you made a mistake and call it a day. I see no reason to defend bad journalism, your only as good as your source and you never even googled any information regarding this game, any quick 1 second search would tell you every thing posted was incorrect. Hell...the only thing correct in that story is that Epic is making Fortnite.

Gears is not a first person shooter, Epic never stated Fortnite was for console, in fact the very opposite, let alone coming exclusively to XONE.

I literally laughed reading that article as all this was news to me as I watched most the E3's for years and don't ever recall such a thing happening.

I mean...its good you changed it, but your site is completely questionable when any member of N4G can do your job for you.

We are correcting your whole article, thus....why are you doing what your doing?

Do what you do because you love it and you do it well. Your article had zero integrity as it seemed you didn't even care about sources, links or any form of credibility. Are you telling us what you factually know or what you thought? Or what you want?

Look bud, all you have to state is you made a mistake . I'm sure none of us will hold it against you as I've made many on here many times based on trusting my memory more then real facts. It happens, but I'm just posting it as a comment, your posting it as NEWS!

It happens bud, but just be humble and respectful about it. Your not a journalist, your just a person posting stories with zero credibility. If your just starting out, sorry but you have a lot to learn.

Let this be a lesson to you, this can only help you and I sincerely mean that.

Baka-akaB3962d ago (Edited 3962d ago )

Still you were making stuff up .The game was always stated as coming on PC with no mention of other platform , and they said in the past , even if it was before the PS4 and XB1 comes along , that it was a project possible on consoles then . Not only for tech reasons , but also the nature of the project .

a possible status on the site , is a farcry from the previous claim that it was announced on console , and a XB1 exclusive

BLACKBIBLE3962d ago

smh... (Face palm) I just can't today with you guys. You got it have a nice day.

Baka-akaB3962d ago (Edited 3962d ago )

You can facepalm all you want .

The fact remains that years ago , they only had this to say "“this is a PC-designed game, it’s shipping exclusively for the PC.”

Now it's still only announced for PC but hinted possible for next gen .

Anyway , yeah , enough time wasted on this

lameguy3961d ago

If it comes to consoles, seems like PS4 is where it'll be at. Here's a comment, today, from a UE4 developer speaking about a particular feature in the engine that Fortnite takes advantage of:

https://forums.unrealengine...
"
Actual measurement of DFAO in 4.9 in a Fortnite level on PS4 is
[2015.05.11-19.50.45:764][ 57]LogRHI:Warning: 15.5% 3.71ms DistanceFieldLighting 0 draws 0 prims 0 verts

Kite demo on an AMD 7870 (close to PS4 specs) in 4.9
[2015.05.01-03.00.51:137][ 81]LogRHI:Warning: 6.8% 4.89ms DistanceFieldLighting 0 draws 0 prims 0 verts

I would consider DFAO to be usable on PS4 in 4.9, the rest of the features are not. We have not gotten a chance to test on Xbox One yet, but I expect DFAO will be too slow to use there as the Xbox one GPU is very weak. However with lowering the resolution enough, it can potentially run the same features as PS4.
"

OhMyGandhi3962d ago (Edited 3962d ago )

Gears is first person...Through the eyes of the cameraman following behind them, who may or may not be the dude in the cloud from Mario 64. We will never know.

Windows 10 Xbox app gets Xbox One SmartGlass tech for future game streaming

Microsoft is migrating several functions formerly reserved for its Xbox One SmartGlass mobile app into the Xbox app for Windows 10, as it increasingly ties the Xbox One console to PCs and mobile devices. SmartGlass is a “second screen” app that was originally written for Windows Phone, allowing it, for example, to control aspects of a connected Xbox One.

--bienio--4063d ago (Edited 4063d ago )

I care more about cross buy then streaming, but for at the moment we Can only wait and see how things going on...anyway future is bright for Pc and xbox palyers;£

ScorpiusX4063d ago

Very cool , W10 is going to be a blast.

mhunterjr4063d ago

I don't have a gaming PC, but the idea of being able to play my Xbox from any room in the house, is very appealing to me!

4062d ago
Macdaddy714063d ago

I have been reading some threads people trashing MS for the streaming pc n x1.. But I love it!!! Going to lot better n more up to date games, then what Sony doing with ps now streaming Old games at a high price,.. I really think MS is going to nail the cross platform n streaming....

ThatOneRiggaNob4063d ago

People will trash Microsoft for anything they do. It's just the way this gen works. Also I don't see why you mentioned ps now since it's an actual streaming service and Xbox to win10 streaming is just you streaming your already owned games to a pc. They're not the same thing at all.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4063d ago

The streaming feature is definitely a positive. I have no idea why anyone would think that cross platform streaming would be a bad thing.
