Open Letter: Let's Save Japanese Game Development

GameRevolution:
"Dear Japanese Video Game Developers,

I feel like we're asked these questions all the time: "What's wrong with Japanese developers?" "How can Japanese develoeprs get back on top?" "Why aren't Japanese games performing as well as they used to?"

It's no secret that Anthony was born and raised on Japanese gaming, Nick practically bleeds obscure Japanese games, and I'm a lapsed Japanophile. I think GameRevolution and its readers feel very close to the Japanese developers struggling to adapt to the burgeoning Western market. We want to play those fantastic JRPGs, action games, fighting games, nonsensical platformers, dungeon-crawlers... Hell, anything that doesn't directly rely on shooting I think we'd gladly take more of.

So, I set out to figure out exactly how Japanese developers can regain dominance, or at least rise to some semblance of their former selves, and here's what I came up with...."

I've been thinking the same thing ever since I saw Inafune's seminar at GDC. Japanese developers spend too much time and energy "westernizing" their games, and it ruins them.

dbjj120885110d ago

Too true. Kind of like how western developers go a little too Western with the 'roided macho men with shaved heads and endless bullet sponging.

MultiConsoleGamer5110d ago

To save the games you must first save the culture.

an0nym0us5110d ago

he's right, japanese culture makes their media come out that way. Western developers don't have the problem thanks to actual diversity, and not different hair colors.
The closest japan came to global entertainment, was Vs fighting games(and Nintendo). Note the usual diversity in vs fighting games. character design based on Hong Kong the States, France, Japan, and actual research being done on fighting styles. But then... they started to half ass everything... "Oh lets make our fighting games about boobs,Breast panty shots, and and and retarded ugly 1 black guy with blonde hair and and SCHOOL GIrl. I mean who cares about martial arts when you have Breast"...

Nothing disappoints me more than seeing Japanese developers fall by the wayside as they chase after the western market.

They need to stop being stuck on PS2 type of graphics and gameplay. It's like they're afraid to leave their comfort zone. I dont know if it's a money issue or whatever but a lot of their games that dont make it to the West look like PS2 games and they're for the PS3. Korean games look way way better and we'd never get to play those.

Dark Souls is a great example of stepping out the box but then they go back in the damn box when they released Armored Core V. The game is so constrained to small maps, crappy textures, and lacked so much of what made Armored Core 4A so great.

Cant wait to get my hands on Soul Sacrifice and Yakuza 5.

Re: "It's like they're afraid to leave their comfort zone."

That...is pretty much Japanese culture, defined. >_>

Disagree if you like. Move here, live here, then see if you disagree ;)

I'm not sure who you're talking to. Why did you reply to my comment with something that had nothing to do with it? Misclick, heh? ^^;;

@rpgfruiti
If he were talking about western developers then yes shooters would be their comfort zone. Japanese Developers don't make many FPS games so your sarcasm is misplaced. Anime styled RPGs however...

I do agree in part with Thana, tho you can't paint all developers the same color. NIS however is a great example of how their games haven't progressed much past what was done on the ps2 but they're a relatively small company and may not have the room to be as creative.

Da One5110d ago

@ScubbaSteve

NIS is the perfect example of why developers stick to one IP and run it dry.

NIS tried to diversify the type of games they make and the platforms they supported. Here's the kicker....it put them in a financially bad state, so much in fact that they had to state that they had to release disgaea 4.

NIS also released ports of the disgaea and other srpg series to the psp/vita because that's what their fans wanted.

Hell they even bought other studios to make other types of games (I'm not sure if these games are doing well).

It's not so much they can't....it's just that their consumers dictate what they do.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle47d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
