How do you Solve a Problem Like Max Payne?

"The man is a high-functioning alcoholic. He spends his nights drinking himself into oblivion while the light of day finds him planting heavy metals deep into the flesh of his enemies with the biologically-ingrained certainty of a fifth generation lead farmer. This repetitive cycle is as precise and determined as the bullets Payne fires off during bullet time. It’s also the entirety of Max Payne 3.

“Every narrative aspiration is upended by Payne’s dime store aphorisms.”

If Payne had a schedule it would read as follows: wake up hung-over, get called into work, drink on the job, and then kill a fuckload of indistinct men with guns before heading back to the apartment to guzzle local rum until throwing up or blacking out, whichever comes first. Rockstar has been parading around Max Payne 3 as a cinematic character study of a man who is “addicted to redemption” when in actuality the game is a lumbering caricature that won’t commit, zig-zagging between parody and seriousness, lacking as it does the nuance and grace required to achieve a less convoluted mixture of both.

Payne spews one-liners that aren’t heavy enough to land, nor light enough to be funny, and every narrative aspiration is upended by Payne’s dime store aphorisms."

Respectfully. This author is jumping on a bandwagon. Max Payne was one of the better games this year. It didn't sell for lots of reason. Those reason need to be analysed and QUICKLY because if great games like this aren't selling we are f@cked as an industry.

Lame psychoanalysis about how Rockstar didn't do their homework in this game is pure bananas. Rockstar puts out MAYBE one or two games out a year. This was a carefully calculated move in their part.

If they thought that they couldn't do justice to the IP let alone their bottom line, they would not have picked it up.

So lets get off the NPD nuts and talk about what really happened here. Gamers are misinformed, short-sighted (because lots of gamers complaint about a heavier Max without playing the game and understating the narrative), renting, borrowing, and stealing the game also doesn't count towards sells..
and the fact that "shooters" always beat about other types of games and this went up against Ghost Recon and you know, gamers cant get enough of shooting each other in the face.

When given a choice great mature story, over military shooters and rat mazes guess what wins?

Although in defense of Ghost Recon it was more than that and the competition was stiff.
Still this title may show some legs in the long haul. The economy is not the greatest so there is also that...BUT that this game was not a runaway success is cause to pause and take notice.

I cannot stress that enough.

In complete contrast to this extremely negative and overly long article I will say - I loved Max Payne 3.

D3mons0ul5076d ago (Edited 5076d ago )

Okay, what would you do to make it better? You say how the game is nothing but mindless violence and a parody of what you consider to be thoughtful storytelling but you don't offer any alternative solutions. This looks like bitching for the sake of bitching. If you're gonna critique a game this deeply, you need to say what you would do to make it better. Did this guy even play the first 2 games? I would understand if he was part of the REMEDY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT bandwagon but seriously...what is this?

InTheLab5076d ago

What the author of the article would do better has nothing to do with what is in Max Payne. It goes without saying that you shouldn't conclude every chapter up to 7 in the exact same way. Self pity, popping pills, and boozing till he pisses himself. Here's a pointless idea that won't help MP3 tell a better story: Stop having Max state the obvious every minute, and must he really bitch for the sake of bitching every time he speaks?

See...you still enjoy the mindless butchery and the rest of us thought the game was lacking in every other category.

Max Payne 3 is a great game. But mp does feel unbalanced and the slow movement really grated many. Even though I think it was very close to reality....reality isn't what gamers want in shooters.

The unbalance come from the boosts and general mechanics. I always thought early I'm my mp gaming career lol, that balance was equal to everyone having the same toys. That applies to max, but the matchmaking will have lvl 40's playing lvl 1's. Fail

InTheLab5076d ago (Edited 5076d ago )

I completely agree with the author here, but I don't place that much weight on the narrative. The game really is a one trick pony. That one trick being the gunplay. Everything else about MP3 is terrible...(well, the graphics are outstanding...so it's a two trick pony.)

The biggest issue I have with the game are the awful controls. Max is a booze hound, and one would expect him to move like a drunken pill popper, but his drinking has nothing to do with why he moves like a zombie. The game's engine is just a mess and has always been a mess.

Max frequently gets hung up on just about everything he passes. It takes precious seconds to change directions despite having a button that will quickly turn Max around. The animations in this game MUST play out before the player has control.

That also applies to the broken cover system. I can't count how many times I've bullet timed into cover, only to stand right back up to absorb a few more bullets, before finally going to cover. Once in cover, you're still not safe. Max will occasionally stand straight up to blind fire, instead of firing from cover.

I'll stop here and just say that I did not enjoy my time with MP3. I actually traded it in after finally finding the girl only to have yet another bullshit setback(the 3rd one at that point)...

StrawberryDiesel4205076d ago

Stop...The controls were fine, you just suck maybe?

InTheLab5076d ago (Edited 5076d ago )

Or maybe you're just playing on Easy?

You can't tell me you don't mind that Max stands up in the middle of a gun fight, JUST to get back into cover. That's a broken mechanic and you're full of shit if you deny that...

I got 80% trophy completion on Ragnarok but left a few of the battles. Will come back to it one day.

Miraak82 1047d ago

Dragon Quest 11 is my top pick

RpgSama1047d ago

Dragon Quest XI was such an AMAZING game, I had a blast from the very beginning all the way to the very end, it actually got better the more you played, full of surprises as well.

Another game that I enjoyed from the very beginning all the way to the end of the 100% completion was Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Really, really, really fun game with a great heartfelt story.

badz1491047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )

Where is Horizon Zero Dawn?? where is Ghost of Tsushima?? I just got my Platinum on HZD and is now trying to finish the Frozen Wild expansion. so much care and love went into that game and it really shows. I especially adore the lore and have sunk many hours listening to the logs and reading journals. the back story is great and the gameplay is awesome. can't wait to replay on the hardest difficulty on NG+. next in my list would be to finish GoTsushima

Tacoboto1047d ago

Ghost was fantastic especially after Iki Island and the PS5 upgrade. 100%'d that, Horizon Forbidden West (not ZD), GoW (not yet Ragnarok), Spider-Man, and R&C: Rift Apart.

Each one absolutely worth it.

Aloymetal1047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )

100% I would like to add to you list RDR2, amazing as well and the perks from getting the Legend Of The East outfit is awesome.
Sekiro as well, have to play twice to get it but it's worth it!

Demetrius1047d ago

I agree I'm on my 2nd playthroughs of both horizon forbidden West(zero dawn I played also) ghost of Tsushima except I'm replaying it on PS5 this time, the iki island expansion is amazing

ClayRules20121047d ago

Yeah, GoT was already an AMAZING game on PS4, but playing it on PS5, along with that expansion, just even better.

Elda1047d ago

I just started my copy of GOW:R, enjoying it so far.

DefenderOfDoom21047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )
