Why games are actually cheaper than ever before

OXM writes: "I remember when the grass was greener, toast always landed buttered side up, muggers said "thank you" after they robbed you, and buying a new game wouldn't eat you out of house and home. Well, actually, I don't remember the last bit. If games of yore seem less expensive now, that's partly because the price of commodities in general has risen."

Anyone who says "gaming is more expensive now" is basically saying "I've been gaming since PS1".

Mario 3 cost me about $120 after taxes. So......buying Journey for $14.99 isn't that big of a deal, neither is a great SP game for $60. Some of you need to get your mind right, you want some cheap entertainment....pick up a stick and go explore (and take a monkey with you).

NastyLeftHook05137d ago

yup, mario kart costed me $90.00.

And where am I going to get a monkey on the cheap? Jesus Christ. You think Monkeys just grow on trees or something?

A monkey, she says...

If I had a monkey, do you think I would even be here typing all this out? No. I would be out enjoying the fun the monkey provides me.

PC games are tremendous value, but the market saturation on console games are also helping a lot. Next generation though, things might change except for Wii U. Their Wii U might have an uphill battle, which can result in low priced games if the demand isn't there.

Outside_ofthe_Box5136d ago

In my opinion, $60 is that big of deal when just last gen I was paying $40/$50 for a game...

StarFox5136d ago (Edited 5136d ago )

i can't speak for other countries but in america people cant just drop 60$ on game especially in this economy, also considering the vast amount of good games that come around the same time frame. another thing to note is the companies putting out incomplete games and basically making you pay a premium in the form of DLC so when you really think about it your paying 70-90$ for a game. last gen you did not have to worry about these things you drop 50/40$ on game that was it, no other extra shit and tbh i miss just paying one price for a game.

vishant1015136d ago

I live in nz mw2 cost $140 so when i see americans complaining about $60 games it makes me wish i could pay $60

2pacalypsenow5136d ago (Edited 5136d ago )

@vishant101
well in New Zealand you dont use dollars so you can say it costs you 140$ because you minimum wage isnt $8 , prices over there are based on you economy not ours

Enigma_20995136d ago (Edited 5136d ago )

Mario 3 cost you $120, and you're blaming that on us? Nobody made you buy that. And $60-65 IS up there, whether you made silly purchases or not. Of course $15 isn't much to pay for a game, but when was the last time you paid $15 for a downloadable game that felt like a FULL game? That's why they're usually only $15...

I bet even the monkey was smart enough not to pay $120 for an NES game...

@2pacalypsenow

They can't be bothered to mention something like that.. it makes too much sense.

Kind of gross though!

morkendo235136d ago (Edited 5136d ago )

damn!! cant beleive these kids could not realize you were playing saying you'll MAYBE!!! even suck a D to get that game.

OT: SNES games as Street Fighter 2,DONKY KONG,CONTRA,R-TYPE,GRADIUS,SUP ER MARIO BRO.,MORTAL KOMBAT name a few at toy's r-us was cheap 39.99 cant believe international prices was high as hell 74.99-90.00 124.00 im like keep that shit.

Bathyj5136d ago

$AU135 for Street Fighter 2 on SNES.

I hate all this complaining about game prices being too high and a SP only game not worth 60 bucks.

Games are cheaper than ever and most games I get for 70 to 80 dollars new.

Even less if I'm willing to wait a couple weeks for Ozgameshop to mail them to me.

2pacalypsenow5136d ago

Last Gen they were 49.99 now they are 59.99 so they aren't cheaper than ever

Bathyj5136d ago (Edited 5136d ago )

Well here they were 100 or occasionaly 110 and now theyre 70 or 80, so speaking for Australians only, yes games are cheaper than ever.

Intentions5136d ago

They're expensive like a bitch

DlocDaBudSmoka5136d ago

imo gaming has never been cheap. especially in the early years of gaming. games more than likely got bought at full price, where as in today's gaming society there are gamestops on every 4th corner to "save" people money.

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle76d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7576d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.
