Nintendo’s Current Gen System: Wii U

splitkick: With a system that supposedly launches this holiday season, Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date or price, and even stranger, has not revealed technical specs of the device. They’ve only hit on broad strokes: It can do 1080p. It has an IBM multi-core processor and an AMD Radeon graphics chip. It also has some internal flash storage.

This leads me to believe that in terms of power and performance, the Wii U is generally on par with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; systems that were released 5 and 6 years ago respectively. The only thing that the Wii U really brings to the table is its GamePad.

So he's basing this on some vague specs and launch titles?

People are just so insightful, no?

live2play5107d ago

people are that forgetfull

nintendo didnt announce price and release dates for the
wii
3ds
and now wiiu
TILL SEPTEMBER
and when the hell do they ever talk about specs?
nintendo NEVER DOES THAT

maybe general specs but iwata doesnt have an iwata asks on systems specs

PopRocks3595107d ago

They've never done that historically. For people to be flipping out over it now as if it was to be expected is completely ridiculous.

live2play5107d ago (Edited 5107d ago )

and people alos expect amazing titles at the LAUNCH of the system

since when do systems launch with such amazing titles?
they seem to think that the ps3 launched with uncharted 3 and 360 launched with gears of war 3 and halo 4

those launches had virtually NOTHING but ports
launch systems are started out with ports

but people want 3d mario, zelda, starfox, f zero, exclusive 3rd party right out of the gate...

as far as launches go the wiiu has some of the best games

PopRocks3595107d ago

There are some promising games for Wii U. Nothing HUGE so far, but it has promising games. P-100? Pikmin 3? Zombie U? They're very promising titles IMO. Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, Assassin's Creed III and Ninja Gaiden 3 are being marketed as best played on Wii U. And there's the promise of future titles like the Aliens game, Retro Studios' upcoming game as well as Monolith's.

But you do bring up a strong point. Neither the 360 nor the PS3 had any of their defining franchises at launch either. No Halo for 360 for at least a year and no Uncharted for PS3's launch.

Whether people see it or not, the Wii U launch lineup thus far is not massive, but it's certainly adequate at the very least. Those who say otherwise, I think, more than likely wrote off the Wii U the moment it was announced.

allyc4t5107d ago

I remember when the Wii was first announced and people were bashing it because of it's inferior specs that were similar to the Gamecube. Then it ended up being one of the best selling consoles ever.

If anyone knows wtf it's doing, it's Nintendo.

SocksAreForYourFeet5107d ago (Edited 5107d ago )

But dude, it was also the worst console. It's all about the price, and the Wii was really cheap in comparison to its competitors. I don't understand why you'd settle for less. Imagine a Nitendo console on the same level as the others.
You would have all those awesome exclusives and all the third party games like GTA, Resident Evil, Burnout, etc, along with all the awesome exclusives. Most of the games at launch are just simple ports and and there is much more money for publishers in the core market(PS,PC,Xbox) so if there is a large leap we'll just get a repeat of the current generation. And besides, the PS3 and the 360 are still selling loads and will likely surpass the Wii's sales at the end of their life-cycle, i.e, price.

Edit (CacI): I don't think you're getting the point, people wanted something new because they already had those consoles anyway. The reason Nintendo is making cheap and affordable consoles is because the Gamecube didn't sell very well and they don't want that to happen again. And of course their line-up is good. They have ports from consoles where the generation ain't even finished and is reaching it's peak.
And I'm talking about the future when it may not be able to produce the same games as the next-generation consoles. If the Wii U really was a next generation-console, it would blow away the PS3 and the 360, but it didn't. And even though it will improve, that will seem irrelevant soon afterwards. And besides, why wouldn't you be concerned. Traditionally, third party support withered on Nintendo's platforms for these exact reasons and a general lacl of sales.

live2play5107d ago

what you say doesnt make sense

when the wii launched people could buy a gamecube and ps2 for way cheaper with the amazing library of games...

when the ps3 launched at 599 people could buy cheaper consoles like the ps2 and xbox...

system launches ALWAYS HAVE PORTS

as far as launches go wiiu has the best so far

what did ps3 launch with? RIIIIIIIGE RACERRRRRRR
AND LOOK AT IT NOW

avengers19785107d ago

What you say is true, but there sales have fallen sharply, for both hardware and software, and there stocks fell, and nintendo lost money for the first time in a while. If the wii u isnt priced right it will have a tough time, Ok has anyone else seen that on Amazon games like SSB U were 99.99(this cant be riht)

live2play5107d ago

reggie JUST stated that the 3ds surpassed the sofware sales of the ds in the same amount of time...
and ofcourse hardware sales will fall
almost everyone already has a wii and they are launching A NEW SYSTEM

do people use their brain on this site?

WeskerChildReborned5107d ago

I have faith in Wii U that it will be a pretty cool system. It's already being innovative by having a screen on the controller which people keep criticizing but from people i've heard from, the controller is still comfortable.

live2play5107d ago (Edited 5107d ago )

the fact is these people will spin the story to fit their side

say wiiu was releasing AFTER the ps4
people would say: nintendo wont have a chance by the time they release ps4 would already be cheaper and have a better bigger library of games

now wiiu releases BEFORE the ps4
people would say: nintendo is doomed, it will be inferior when ps4 comes out and will crush it

they will never consider the fact that hey maybe bythe time ps4 720 releases the wiiu will be cheaper and have a library of games instead of the ports the launches are riddled with

SYSTEM
LAUNCHES
ALWAYS
HAVE
PORTS
they never come blasting out of the gate with games

and yes the conference was HORRIBLE!!!
why does that mean the games are bad?
read hands on
look at previews
all of them say the games are fun EVEN NINTENDOLAND

SocksAreForYourFeet5107d ago

But it won't be able to play some of the next generation games, meaning less quality and less third-party support. It's just the Wii all over again and that's fine if all you want is Nintendo's awesome exclusives but some seek more value than that.

im buying wii u. i cant miss out on zelda.

ChunkyLover535107d ago

Next generation doesn't mean futuristic specs. Its the next console from Nintendo, so its next generation regardless of its final specs.

WeskerChildReborned5107d ago

True, it's Next Generation for Nintendo and it look's like a big step from the Wii.

omarzy5107d ago

yes, thank you. i am tired of hearing about how a system is "said gen" based on graphics. i think the gamepad alone makes it a new generation more than an upgraded video card does

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer93d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot93d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno93d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay93d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno91d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK91d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
