Turn-based strategy has been one of the least excitable and engaging genres of video gaming to grace my screens in a long while. This is not to say, however, that there aren’t well-made and fun-to-play turn-based games out there. Fans of the genre will remember fondly Final Fantasy Tactics and an older title called XCOM. Things have changed since the 90’s and people have grown to expect different things from their video games such as extensive graphics, exceptional exposition, exciting combat, and dynamic character development. With these sorts of expectations to adhere to in the modern game industry it would be difficult to develop a game in the turn-based style that could pull these off.
At E3 last week we got to see the new XCOM game dubbed XCOM: Enemy Unknown and after seeing some of the gameplay most people will likely reevaluate what they consider boundaries and limitations on the turn-based format. This game not only looks exciting, but explores a new way to play XCOM w...

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.
If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.
Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
Good article but this guy must have not played valkyria chronicles for ps3. It is one of my favorite games this generation. And it didn't have any trouble with character development and action on a turn based grid. Its actually a brilliant template for next Gen turned based strategy games. Then they took it to the PSP. I want it back. Looks like xcom could satisfy my need as it reminds me a lot of valkyria chronicles. Its 3rd person, on a grid and u can move and shoot a certain amount based on a finite point system. The greatest thing about VC was the brilliant strategy. One wrong move could spell doom but at the same time there were many different ways to finish it. Replay was high because u could always try to do better. And the characters are some of the most beloved I have ever played with. It included war, nationalism, racism, hope, hopelessness, loss, pride, evil antagonists, love etc.
So yes it can b done as it has already been done. In fact, I think it lends itself well to story and character development.
I haven't been really excited for a game release lately. I almost started to think it was because of my long experience with video games. Now I'm beginning to think otherwise.
I'm really looking forward to XCOM and Aliens: Colonial Marines. Two day one buys for me.
