Microsoft Top Xbox 360 Man Talks Next Generation

IGN:

Microsoft doesn't want to talk about its next console, known as Xbox 720 or Durango. But we do want to talk about the next generation and so do readers. We want to know why Microsoft came to E3 without showing us anything of its next-gen system, which is currently with developers.

GamingPerson5093d ago (Edited 5093d ago )

Getting the Usher Edition 720 kinect Bundle next gen.

ChunkyLover535093d ago

I'm looking forward to the Wonderbook Edition PS4!

Seriously though, its clear Microsoft knows core gamers are the early adopters. Next years E3 will be an epic battle between Microsoft and Sony, both showing off new hardware and new software.

Cant wait to see it.

yesmynameissumo5093d ago

I wonder about Microsoft though. The past 3yrs, everyone has expected their E3s to be dominating exclusive game/features paloozas, that (in reality) are pretty underwhelming and show the change of focus from games to everything else. Next year will be interesting.

DeadlyFire5092d ago

I hate books. Wonderbook is no different. Give me dual shock + PS4 I am satisfied.

Biggest5092d ago

Awesome! Bring up the one thing that sucked to combat the three years of Kinect focus. Good on you, DeadlyFire!

Shaman5093d ago (Edited 5093d ago )

I HONESTLY think that Sony and especially MS, trying to make their consoles media hubs too is good thing. Think about it, you have EVERYTHING on your machine. Online, movies, music, social networking. phone tablet syncing, kids stuff and in the end ALOT of games.

Just because they go for media at the end of this gen doesn't mean there won't be any games. 1st party wont suddenly disappear, 3rd party especially.

Media hub gives MS and Sony choice to BEEF up the machines and sell them at bit higher price to people. I don't think now, many people would have trouble paying 500-600 bucks for technologically amazing game console that also does everything you expect from media hub. You CAN'T sell gaming console and only gaming console for 600 bucks. You can't sell smartphone for 600$ that doesn't have net, music, great camera, big screen and million of other things packed. If they DON'T go for media hub in your living room together with console, Apple will, and they know it. Thats why consoles are starting to be also about connectivity, media and casual stuff too.

So...They will have teams focused on media and casual things, but games will like always come first. Thats why all the studios are gearing up for next gen already for a year and half.

mcstorm5092d ago

Shaman I agree with everything you have just said and I have been saying it for a long time that when MS came into the console business it was to make a hub for games, music and videos as a replacement for the media centre.

I really like what MS have done with the 360 this gen. Yes they have given us various Dashboard's and Apps but imo each one has got better and better.

I am a core gamer and games always come 1st for me but ide rather have 1 device under my tv that will do everything that several to do different things.

This is the only gen where I have owned 2 of the same console (2 360's and 2 PS3's) as I use them in our room as a media hub and to paly games on in my room as well as the front room.

I also think there is still another 12 to 18 months left in both the 360 and PS3 looking at some of the games on both consoles at E3.

I am also getting fed up with people saying that the 360 has too many casual games. I don't think this is true at all. If I look at my collection of core games on the 360 there are more than enough for every core gaming type but what people now need to start thinking is that we need Sony, Micrsoft and Nintendo to make casual games because this is there next gen of core gamers they need to bring onto there consoles and what is wrong with Playing games like Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Wii Sports, Eye Pet ect with the family? Games consoles are for everyone not just the core.

Hayabusa 1175092d ago

I agree with you both, 360 is a good media mub, which is why it's ridiculous the 360 still doesn't play .mkv files! (at least last time I checked it didn't...should probably check if they've pacthed it.) It's crazy that I don't use it to watch films, but that's because I only want to watch films in hi-def, and most hi-def films I download are in the .mkv format. Having said that, maybe I'd rather not watch films through the 360, not with the horrific noise my XBox slim makes at times :P

Tonester9255092d ago

I remember when the PS3 released, how Microsoft LAUGHED at Sony because they said that the PS3 wasn't a gaming machine but, an Entertainment Center instead. NOW look how the tables have turned and who's at the bottom concerning games lol

CryWolf5092d ago (Edited 5092d ago )

Well Microsoft could have showed off a Next-Gen console in alpha or beta form at there Press conference and some pre-alpha Next-Gen games with better graphics at lease to make there E3 conference more interesting.

CoolBeansRus5093d ago (Edited 5093d ago )

LOL. good job aawell you left the tool speechless. Anyone can be a troll. Next time express yourself in a better way.'

a_squirrel5092d ago

Girls, girls, take it easy.

Hanuman5093d ago

I'm thinking 2014 after reading this.. Damn.. MS, Sony and Nintendo have totally lost touch with the hardcore gaming community.

BattleTorn5093d ago

No way.

Didn't you see the IGN article that said 60% of developers responded saying they have no intensions releasing games for current hardware past 2013?

http://ca.ign.com/articles/...

Hanuman5093d ago

Thanks for the heads up..

BISHOP-BRASIL5093d ago

Which, in itself, points for next-gen in 2014, probably holiday. If you finish/release your current gen projects 'till the end of 2013 you gonna need at least a year before releasing anything else.

Considering that it's a new hardware, which may be at least a little more demanding to learn, and the step up in graphics may consume more time than current gen graphics...

I would say most major devs are planning to expend at least two years for this new games, if they start by 2013, games will start to show by 2015, in the first year of the new console's life cycle.

If publishers were saying that instead of developers than it would mean next-gen by 2013, but that's not the case.

ApolloAdams5093d ago

The hardcore gaming community won't keep sales up though and this is the sad reality.

Gaming consoles are turning into entertainment boxes right now.

The "hardcore gamers" aren't going to bring home the money it will be those who want one box for all their media that can also play games.

Gone are the days that consoles are made for only games or mostly games.

BattleTorn5093d ago

This absolutely true - except you're missing one thing.

The people who are now out-numbering us gamer - the ones who want consoles to be "entertainment boxes" - they AREN'T going to buy Next-Gen hardware Day1. They aren't the ones who are going to wait outside at midnight to get their hands on the newest piece of hardware.

That is why the companies, for their own interest, will have to re-focus on hardcore-gaming at launch. Hardcore launch-titles are going to matter the most, and not which platform has the most media-apps.

andibandit5092d ago (Edited 5092d ago )

@ApolloAdams

like it or not we need the casual market + more.

Larger userbase -> less financial risk for game publishers/developers -> Takes chance on new IP's instead of sequel after sequel

BertlSenix5092d ago

@ Battletorn

And this is the problem.
Again we won't know which console we have to buy at the beginning of the Next Gen.
360 started great with a lot of stuff and now it has no games.
I bought 3 360s that are just paperweight CAUSE i HATE Failo,Gears and Call of Duty.
I bought the console for Games like Kameo,Dead or Alive 4,all the J-RPGs and better Multiplats...All that isn't there anymore on the 360.

But the PS3 grew stronger with every year.
At the day Uncharted came Sony turned tables for MY taste of gaming.
They also got nearly every developer they lost back to their side.
J-RPG Devs favor the PS3 - Stuff like Dead or Alive 5 will be better on the PS3.Games like Dark Souls were better on the PS3 and so on.
Nearly every Multiplat i care about and ISN'T on PC is BETTER on PS3(FF13(-2),Vanquish(they changed to the PS3 after the Bayonetta disaster),Dead or ALive 5,Ninja Gaiden 3(game is crap i know),LA Noire and so on.
Every other Multiplat is better on PC of course if available(Skyrim,Battlefield 3,AssaCreed 3 and the PS3 Version is also better than the 360 version) and so on.

I mean i had a great time in the first 2 years of the 360 but after that it was all about 3-4 Franchises no REAL Gamer cares about cause they are just yearly updated.

M$ should say now what they plan to do with the Nextbox...
Cause if this repeats i won't buy one before this thing is as cheap as the 360 is now.
Cause i rather buy the PS4 this time at first cause a slow start with tons of great exclusives over the years is better than a rush out and no games for 4 years(Remember i have a gaming PC and hate Halo,Gears and CoD.Neither do i need Kinect and such Star Wars dancing crap)

wolokowoh5092d ago

@BertlSenix You have to look at a company's track record. I bought a PS3 in 2007 for God of War 3 because I knew after playing God of War 2, GOW3 was going to be on PS3. You actually can tell. Sony is going to be the on until the very end pushing new IPs. Look at Tokyo Jungle, Last of Us, Beyond, Gravity Rush(originally planned to be a PS3 game), etc. Nintendo will do the same except for the last year aka look at Gamecube's and Wii's last years. One or two games came out. Microsoft hasn't really had the best track record. Even at the beginning they were buying exclusives instead of making their own. Don't get me wrong if they helped fund a game like Alan Wake that's fine but timed exclusive BS needs to stop

givemeshelter5092d ago

Hardcore gamers never kept up sales for console gaming. They have always made up the small percentage of consumers. If a console company primarily focused on the hardcore demographics they would go bankrupt.

'I'm thinking 2014 after reading this.. Damn.. MS, Sony and Nintendo have totally lost touch with the hardcore gaming community.'

LMAO @ people who pretend Micrsoft lost touch with their hardcore community when they continue to release the biggest hardcore games in the industry.
As usual it's people who arent hardcore 360 gamers who complain on the internet, not the actual gamers.

Micrsoft hit it out of the park at E3, the others simply showed the games that will be at the next e3 and beyond.

Edit..

@ Ken22

Not looking at at link..remember what mama always said 'use your words'..lol

Your 'profile' was created last month I'm sure you have plenty to say.

Evil

ShinMaster5092d ago

Should totally click that link, man.

I like how they said MS, Sony and Nintendo, yet you only got really defensive of Microsoft.

When you say "the biggest hardcore games in the industry", are you talking about the two exclusives, Gears and Halo? Or all the other multiplatform games?

Then proceeded to say that "the others simply showed the games that will be at the next e3" ....which was idiotic if you're talking about Sony because all of their announced games are scheduled to release before E3 next year. Not sure about Nintendo.

EVILDEAD3605092d ago (Edited 5092d ago )

'Then proceeded to say that "the others simply showed the games that will be at the next e3" ....which was idiotic if you're talking about Sony because all of their announced games are scheduled to release before E3 next year.'

Wait WHO is being idiotic when YOU literally just made up a 'fake' schedule for games that NEVER had a release date.

Sony kept it real and said God of War, Last of Us arent coming close to coming in 2012. Beyond WILL be at subsequent E3s..maybe the next two.

Naughty Dog always said that Last of Us potentially would show up in the first quarter of 2012.

Heres the dilemna, do they push Last of Us or God of War into the old Killzone slot in March/April when GTA 5 and a slew of other games may arrive at the same time.

Either way, what does Sony release this holiday that even comes cloase to the caliber of those games? All we can hope for is that Last Guardian shows up at Tokyo. But, Sony just admitted that there were issues with the game which is why it hasnt been shown.

Evil

MaxXAttaxX5091d ago

GOW Ascension will be releasing on March, just like GOWIII.

March = before E3(June)
First quarter = before E3(June)

EITHER WAY, the point is that Sony delivered games. You can go ahead and focus on release dates all you want, which btw, is a poor argument for "I'm sad I don't have enough 360 exclusives :( ".

EVILDEAD3605090d ago

It always makes me laugh that these profiles who cant read..I literally wrote

'Heres the dilemna, do they push Last of Us or God of War into the old Killzone slot in March/April when GTA 5 and a slew of other games may arrive at the same time.'

We knew a game would make it first quarter since Naughty said Last of Us could make it first. But since that clearly isnt the case then you wont see it till the next E3.

EITHER WAY, the point is that Sony delivered games. You can go ahead and focus on release dates all you want, which btw, is a poor argument for "I'm sad I don't have enough 360 exclusives :( ".

LOL..sorry to break it to you they ALL delivered games on the stage. But if ALL of your most anticipated games won't be played until a minimum of 9 months from now then whats the point?

MaxXAttaxX5090d ago (Edited 5090d ago )

I see you got pretty defensive about Mircrosoft losing touch with the hardcore community, but insinuated that others(Sony) did lose touch just because most of their core games aren't coming out this year? Is that it!? LOL you just jelly.

By the way, PS Battle Royale and LBP Karting come out this year and so do several Vita games.
Beyond may be one of the only recently announced games to be at next years E3.
And how does this affect you again? As usual, it's non-PS3 fans who complain about the most minor stupid sh*t.

GTAV isn't a problem for everyone. It's not like people are restricted to only buying 1 game per month. At least, it's not a problem for many including myself.

EVILDEAD3605090d ago

'I see you got pretty defensive about Mircrosoft losing touch with the hardcore community, but insinuated that others(Sony) did lose touch just because most of their core games aren't coming out this year? Is that it!? LOL you just jelly.'

LMFAO @ this guy literally using the word 'jelly'

Read again..it's two completely seperate arguments. Why would I say someones not hardcore because they don't release at a certain date.

I just said Microsoft had a great E3 because they DO have their biggest games releasing in 2012 and the others don't.

The funny part is you thought I was saying Sony didn't have hardcore games coming then bragged about the fact that Little Big Planet Karting and Super Smash PS Allstars was coming this year..LOL

So these are games you consider HARDCORE franchises?

Wow..I love how E3 literally reversed everything they hammered MS about for the last two years.

Look I'm not bashing ONE game or the PS3..I own and love my Slim..no one knows the behind gthe scenes issues with the games, but cmon you GOT to be kidding me if you dont think it would have been 150 times better for Sony gamers to get a game on the caliber of GOW or Last of Us during the holiday as opposed to next year?

Jelly....LMFAO

"In my heart I'm a core gamer. There are some people that are looking for what's next. And I love that. Those are the catalysts for our business, those are the people who are going to line up outside the store the night before and get the newest piece of hardware when it comes out. You want to keep that core enthusiast involved in what you're doing, and they're the most critical."

My favorite part.

joshuatobi5093d ago (Edited 5093d ago )

I own the 360 and ps3 the 360 i mainly use for watching movies and listening to music and rarely game on it, my gaming platform is always my ps3 for any type of game

theWB275093d ago

I assume you don't own an hd tv if you're watching movies on the 360. That makes no sense if you do own one.

NoobJobz5093d ago

That's what i was about to say. Why the hell would you switch from the ps3 to the 360 to watch movies?

dubt725093d ago

True, although I use my 360 for HBO Go, Amazon Prime and Netflix, and switch to my standalone Bluray player for that media.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay19d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn220d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn219d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay19d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay19d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac19d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger20d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300020d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde20d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde19d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_18d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
