Even if the 360 outsells it in 2008. Solid games are coming for the PS3. I can't find any reason to own a 360. Even if I did, the poor quality of hardware would make me nervous.

But you also can't deny that a lot of ground has been made up by Sony. Imagine if the PS3 was still $600. No one would be buying it.

I know the figures for the end of the year are brutal as far as sales for the PS3 is concerned compared to the 360 and wii, but I guess I'm a glass half full guy because I see a lot of progress.

Sony screwed up the launch of the PS3. It's hard to deny that. The $600 figure was the worst part of it all. But, a lot of ground has been made up since the beginning of the year as far as sales go. The 360 used to outsell by 3:1 and almost 4:1 margins throughout half of the year until the $400 PS3 came out.

No matter what your console of choice is, it's hard to not give credit for Sony at least trying. I just wish they would have started with the $400 PS3 to begin with, because I probably wouldn't even be typing this if they had.

EDIT-cmrbe, that's exactly why I can't change from my position. When I think of the PS3 this year, all I can think of is great games to look forward to and new firmware updates that finally give me the in-game messaging that I want. There are just too many heavy-hitters to think anything less than a spectacular year of games from the PS3. That's EXACTLY what I want from my console. Not only great games to play, but great games to look forward too, and the PS3 is delivering.

Still hard to believe PS3 outsold the 360 last year. 360 had Halo 3, and PS3 didn't even release in Europe until March. Crazy frickin' world. Can't wait to see how 2008 turns out.

I think he's saying that because according to VG-charts the PS3 has supposedly been outselling the 360 for the last few weeks from VG-charts guessing reports.

This was PS3s worst year, but hardly disastrous. From now on it can only get better: With incoming most wanted games raising demand, price drops raising sales, and lower production costs putting Sony in-the-money, and format supporters falling like domino pieces in favor of Blu-ray, very little can go Wrong.

With Xbox 360 dead in Japan, struggling in most of Europe, competing in the UK and strong in the USA, clearly one can see that 360 is headed in a direction where its game line-up is not going to appeal to everyone, relegating itself to a very similar consumer base as last-generation, save a few innovations which improve its situation over last-gen.

Yes the PS3 is selling well on a worldwide basis. but NPD doesn't show that so why should anyone from the countries far greater than the the US of A care about anything NPD says. let the yanks sit in a corner with their 360's and cry about what could have been. as for everyone carrying on about developers only developing for the system with larger market share? got me confused. by this comment all developers should be working on Wii titles. yes the xbox 360 has sold 17mill worldwide (1 year and 3 months headstart(europe and pal)), the PS3 only 9.2mill, so what that is still over 50% in less than a year. what everyone fails to understand is that at the current time the PS3 has half the market share the 360 has. if things stay the way they are then it would be fair to say that by years end (08) the 360 would have sold 24mill or so. with sales continuing the way they are for PS3 it should reach around 17mill (same position the 360 is in now) but in that case the PS3 at the end of 08 with my guestimate numbers has a 67% or two thirds market share and so on and so on (the percentage will always increase. but it is with the current sales which put PS3 50k units a week in front that it will slowly claw back. think 50k a week for 20 weeks is 1 million. 2 and a half million a year. remember fugures show 360 sales slowing world wide.

The PlayStation 3 will always be far behind, with the Xbox 360 beating it in software and hardware sales it will be impossible for the PS3 to close the gap and it will certainly go the way of the Gamecube.

The Xbox 360 has continued to prove an incredible success, dominating in marketshare, hardware and software sales. This alone seals the Xbox 360s longevity and future as a successful console.

With the failure of the PS3, Sony will have to launch another system early to take back marketshare as the PS3 stagnates, expect this new PlayStation to be out around 2010 or 2011, certainly Sony will try and pre-empt Microsoft's new Xbox so that they do not have a repeat of what happened this generation, but by then the damage might have been too severe for them to reverse their fortunes and hopefully they will just exit the console business altogether and leave the true innovators of the gaming industry behind

so whats all this bs about it came out a year late .look at wii hardware sales .

I don't think the PS3 will surpass the 360 anytime soon, but I do think that PS2 owners who bought a 360 will start seeing their franchises appearing on the PS3 and it will convince some of them to get one. Gran Turismo games all sold over like what? 8 to 10 million copies? Metal gear fans are hardcore, the 4 million people that bought Snake Eater will line up to buy Metal Gear Solid 4.

Even if it's behind in sales, it still doesn't lack great games.

My point is that, look at the Dreamcast, it "failed" but as a console, and as a games machine, it was a resounding win. I don't think the PS3 will become the next Dreamcast, and Sony certainly has learned its lesson in humility and overestimating their own products, and the public's buying power.

contrary to what the jacked up media says about *ANYTHING Playstation 3 related, the PS3 has quite a few *GREAT games you *CAN'T get on the 360:

Resistance - don't judge a book by it's cover, this game delivers intense firefights, a great story, and *FANTASTIC online support, with up to 40 players simultaneous, and *NO LAG.

Motorstorm - another solid, great game. it's basically Burnout, but for off-road racing (a bold claim, i know, but it's the closest comparison i can think of)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma - Gaiden was great on the X Box, so there's no reason to think that it wouldn't be great on the PS3, what with improved visuals (1080p at 60fps, actually). there were a *LOT of Playstation 2 gamers last generation that didn't play Gaiden on the X Box, so the tried and true "this game is old, and everybody's played it already" line doesn't apply to PS2 gamers.

Warhawk - one of the best online games out there right now. 32 player simultaneous, with *NO LAG, a strong online community, like Resistance, and a great mix of tactical, and balls out gameplay.

Heavenly Sword - a great action game, despite the fact that it didn't live up to the hype (and seriously, when a game is being billed by *EVERYONE in the media as being "the game to justify the PS3" there's absolutely *NO WAY to live up to that expectation. seriously, the media should be ashamed of themselves). the story is *GREAT, the graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the combat is fun and well-executed. the voice-acting is also superb, and the facial and motion capture is equally fantastic. it's a shame that, because of the gaming press, and shoddy, unfair review scores, people will pass up on this gem.

Folklore - a satisfying action/rpg, with a fun gameplay mechanic that uses the Sixaxis controller well, with an intriguing story, beautifully designed visuals, and fantastic music. the ending is a bit of a "what the hell just happened here?" and the weakest part of the game, but the game is *FUN, and relatively unique in it's execution. lots of downloadable content is also available for it, and at fair prices.

Ratchet and Clank Future - i wasn't a big Ratchet fan (i only played two of them on the PS2), but this game has converted me. the story is *GREAT, and funny, the graphics are indeed as *FANTASTIC as the screenshots lead on (better, actually), and the gameplay is funny, and ever-changing. the sheer number of devices and weapons you collect and level up extends the gameplay significantly. this is a must have for PS3 owners.

Unreal Tournament 3 - it released under the wire, but it's beautiful, frantic, and fun online entertainment. the Midway servers are surprisingly laggy, and i'm not sure why, but most of the user servers are solid, and as Warhawk and Resistance shows, the PSN offers a lag-free experience over 95% of the time. single player campaign isn't really a single player campaign at all, and it's just a series of matches strung together loosely (and i do mean *LOOSELY), by cutscenes. the real thing that makes Unreal Tournament 3 rock is the support of mods. i've already downloaded at *LEAST 30 pieces of extra content, for *FREE, since the game released last year. from new maps, to new gametypes, to new character models (Bender from Futurama, anyone?). there are some hurdles to overcome, and mod support isn't perfect, but this has never been attempted for consoles before, as far as i know, and Epic, and the PC modding community are finding their footing.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - hands down, the best game released on the PS3 so far. the graphics; mind-blowing (seriously, the demo does *NOT do this game justice. everytime i pop in the disc and fire up Uncharted, despite the fact that i've already beat the game 4 times, i'm blown away by the visuals and animation system). the enemy AI is *BRUTAL (especially on "Crushing", which is what i'm playing it on right now for playthrough number 5), the story is great, the acting superb, and the characters in this story actually have some believability to them and it's easy to get wrapped up in their adventures. Uncharted has tapped into what makes characters like Indiana Jones so appealing and fun.

what's important to note about this list of quality games for the PS3, is how *DIFFERENT each one is from the other. in style, tone, and execution. not a single one of them feels like the other.

i own a 360, but one of the major complaints i have about the games that i've played on the system is that they tend to *FEEL exactly the same.

Crackdown -third person shooter with "super-powers" (if you can call jumping high and picking up trucks a super-power). i like this game, but overall, it's kinda mediocre, as once you defeat all the gangs, your done. although Key's to the City is a great cheat.

Gears of War - third person shooter. i didn't like Gears of War (i know, i know, sacrilege, right?), but i just couldn't get into it for some reason. i guess the 8 year old Figboy from 1987 would have *CREAMED his pants for this type of game back then, as it appeals to the 1980's "Group of rag-tag, bad@ss mercenaries who take out aliens a la 'Predator' (or any 80's sci-fi action flick, really), but i thought Gears of War's "narrative" was laughably bad and hammy. i didn't feel badass, i felt like i was injected with steroids and testosterone and at any moment, the numerous bulging veins sticking out of my character's body would *BURST. i just don't care much for the "Unreal" art style (it's one of my complaints about Unreal Tournament 3 also, which is why my character is a female; they aren't built like bodybuilders, thankfully). and if UT3 and Gears of War have shown me, writing isn't exactly Epic's strong point.

Bioshock - one of my favorite games, actually, and the most diverse of the 360's heavy hitters released last year. it and Uncharted are my two personal picks for game of the year.

Halo 3 - you know, i don't really want to say anything about Halo 3, because, well. everything that needs to be said about it has already been said, and i don't want to get into it. what i will say, is that i'm not a Halo fan, and this game didn't help convert me.

Mass Effect - i'm actually picking this game up this weekend, but again, it feels like a standard 3rd person shooter, but in outer-space. with that said, i *LOVE Bioware, and i love the world they created in Mass Effect, but the environments are pretty bland, the load times are annoying, and the constant texture pop-in takes me out of the world every time. i also find the fact that they abandoned their KOTOR battle system in lieu of "360 owner fan-service" by making it a 3PS. it's not that it's executed poorly, but when i found out it was a 3rd person shooter, the first thing i thought was, "god, not you *TOO, Bioware." i guess i was kind of hoping for more RPG goodness in the vein of KOTOR. i *LIKE Mass Effect, i *LIKE the story, but technically, i think it could have been better (especially in light of games like Uncharted, which feature *NO LOAD TIMES, and streams *EVERYTHING from the Blu Ray disc, *WITHOUT hard drive caching).

i'm not trashing the 360, but i *AM defending the completely false and ridiculous notion that the Playstation 3 didn't have any "good games" last year. it did. at least for *PLAYSTATION fans. what makes consoles so interesting, is that they can cater to *COMPLETELY DIFFERENT audiences (i mean, look at the Wii for Pete's sake!), and still be great.

it's the reason why i own *BOTH a Playstation 3 *AND an X Box 360; so i can get the best of both worlds.

each console has a different feel and different tone, which is why i like this generation better than last generation, when the Playstation 2, X Box, and Gamecube were basically just battling over who can do the same thing *BETTER. personally, i *LIKE that the 360 is good at certain things, and the PS3 is good at certain things. it gives me more of a reason to own *BOTH (i still have no idea why i owned all 3 consoles last gen, since, for the most part, they had *THE EXACT SAME GAMES, with a few notable exclusives). at least this time around i'm getting some true variety, in practically every sense of the word; PS3 games feel different than 360 games, and vice versa, but *WHY, do gamers nowadays think of that as a *BAD THING?

The more i read fanboy comments from ether side the more i think they aren't actual gamers cause you all seem to care more about hardware sales then playing games.

It doesn't seem like any nextgen console will be pulling a Dreamcast soon,so I don't know why any of the people not working for Sony or MS should bother into fanboy wars.

Ok, so these are rough estimates:

360 sold ~9 mil in 2006 and ~8 mil in 2007.
PS3 sold ~9 Mil in 2007 w/ 'no games'

Now lets say the 360 does as well as it did last year (which will be hard w/ no 'system sellers' confirmed yet besides GTA IV which is multi) it will be around 25 Mil consoles sold (which I predict 22-23, but I digress).

Now lets say the PS3 sells the same as it did last year, except it has MGS4, and GT5, known system sellers and modestly sells 2 Mil more consoles next year (definitely plausable if not probable). Roughly ~11 Mil consoles.

If this happens we'll be at 360 w/ 25 Mil and the PS3 w/ 20 Mil, closing the gap that could easily catch up once FF13 and God of War 3 comes out early 2009.

Now say the 360 does worse this year than last (plausable) and is only around 22-23 million consoles sold by year end. Now say GT5 and MGS4 have a bigger impact, or blu ray becomes the unified format, and Sony can sell 13 Mil consoles next year (also plausable) then we're at a dead heat in the 22-23 million consoles.

While the above isn't probable, it definitely 'could' happen, so to say that the PS3 has to sell a million consoles more than the 360 every month is just not true. 2-3 system sellers (+ God of War & FF13 announced) and it could only take a year to catch up. Again, not probable, but to discount it is ignorant.

My first move as a member will be to point out that I believe Sony is ahead of Microsoft. I never look at ps3 vs xbox 360, but rather, ps3, ps2, and psp vs xbox 360. As an employee of gamestop, Sony makes my store the most profit. I think it's silly to see it as just xbox 360 vs ps 3. Such an approach simply isn't seeing the big picture.

It is a very nice line-up! Good for them. I'm not tearing up however as I do own all three systems and I like the 360. I just want Sony to win, that's all =). They have the cutting edge technology/media and I want to push for it's progress by supporting it.
