Sony E3 2012: We’ll Never Stop Playing

Jack Tretton, President & CEO, writes:

"Just a few moments ago we brought our annual E3 press conference to a close, which marked the official kick-off of E3 and one of my favorite times of the year. As I’ve said previously, gamers are PlayStation’s lifeblood and we will do everything in our power to continue to entertain and amaze you."

So disappointed *frowns*

Edit:

So, the why.

1. Nothing new. No surprises other than an AR book game.

2. Almost half an hour on an AR book game.

3. Too much talk on Sony, not enough showing.

4. Nothing to show a progress on PSN and the very outdated firmware on the PS3.

5. Nothing to show integrating PS Vita and PSN more other than x-play and finally supporting PSOne games (which should be a no-brainer since PSP supports them) on PS Vita.

6. Quantic Dream was good, AC3 was okay, The Last of Us was good, God of War looked just like all the other God of Wars.

7. No price drops, just some new bundles for specific games and a new colored PS Vita rather than a price cut to help increase sales. Though, if CoD is good enough, it could increase sales, but I don't think it will since people play on consoles.

ExPresident5105d ago

How about some detail on why your "so disappointed" that would be helpful.

metsgaming5105d ago

it was really only that wonderbook thing went to long other than that everything else was good. At least they squashed it in the middle of the games instead of the beginning or end. Im more disappointed about lack of other announcement, maybe gamescom. C+/B- imo.

WhittO5105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

The Wonderbook almost ruined the entire conference!

It totally made me forget (almost) everything they showed before because I was so bored/confused/cringing over that fat woman almost crying.

They only showed about 3 good games, I think PlayStation All Stars looks really boring and a bit of a mess tbh, not much strategy or anything...

Abash5105d ago

I blame this site for getting me hyped over things like Cloud gaming, new Sucker Punch game, Agent making an appearance, etc.

I will disregard all E3 rumors from now on and not give sites hits which is all they care about

darthv725105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

The highlights so far (for me) have been:

MS: halo 4, gears, forza, xbox smart glass app.

Sony: god of war, last of us, battle royale, playstation mobile.

Most of the other stuff shown at both is cool but i cant say either was a total winner.

buddymagoo5105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

How can admin be so disappointing and out of touch??? We saw The Last of Us, incredible! God of War, amazing! Battle Royale, super fun! Beyond, unbelievable!

What more do you want???

WhittO5105d ago

^^ The GOW Demo was not "beyond unbelievable", it was really boring, bland and looked like GOW2 HD graphically... until the end with the Kraken, which we didn't really get to see much of.

longcat5105d ago

disappointed about no gaikai news. Made up for it with GOW tho

Christopher5105d ago

***How can admin be so disappointing and out of touch???***

Having an opinion that differs is out of touch? Being an Admin somehow requires me to have an opinion that is more in line with yours?

There was nothing that we didn't really already know other than the AR Book game. And, even then, what they showed really didn't impress. Even The Last of Us gameplay, which is good, doesn't compare to Uncharted 2 or Uncharted 3 on-stage scenes.

The problem isn't just my disappointment with Sony's conference, it's that pretty much everyone has had just as lackluster showings. Ubisoft so far is the show stealer for me.

Nodoze5105d ago

I am going to come right out and say it, God of War has jumped the shark. Still with the quikctime events?? Come on.

I would much rather have had Sony Santa Monica invest time and energy creating Heavenly Sword 2 Vs God of War 4.

Disappointing conference overall. Note to the stage designer for next year...we dont want to see people constantly climbing stairs to get to the stage. Waste of time.

LOGICWINS5105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

Cgoodno, I'm disappointed as well, but maybe not as much as you were. Hardcore applications for Move were completely ignored! And another E3 with no Agent is a slap in the face to gamers.

Dante1125105d ago

Wow, Sony did really well with thier conference, better than MS IMO.

Outside_ofthe_Box5105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

I don't understand how anyone could be impressed with Sony conference.

The ONLY good surprise (if you can call it a surprise) was Quantic Dream's Beyond.

Battle Royale showed gameplay of the SAME 4 characters... ONLY 2 characters were revealed which we already knew since it was leaked, but even if it was the first time we knew about it I don't I can safely say that I wouldn't be impressed with only 2 new characters being revealed..

It was nice to see new AC3 footage, but AC3 was ALREADY shown at Ubisoft's press conference, same goes for FarCry3.

Wonderbook was torture to watch. They spent WAAAY too much time on something that nobody is going to give a sh** about.

The Vita... no price drop... the games... AC was already known to be on the system, CoD had no gameplay...

Last of us and God war were good. We finally got gameplay, but those were expected to be shown.

There was just no surprises. no FFV13, no games from Guerrilla Games, no Last Guardian, no KH HD collection, no games from Kojima, no Agent or GTA... no surprises... what happened to the 20 games?

I'm very very disappointed.

A solid "B" conference. And E3 is not even over yet!

ShadowReaper145105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

What was there to get excited about that you didn't already know? Beyond was the only thing that was really new, the book thing was stupid. And playstation mobile doesn't benefit us it benefits only sony, I mean I already play mobile games on my phone but its nothing for me to get pumped up about. Glad to see other people are as disappointed as I am.

kneon5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

I don't understand all the whining about Wonderbook. You seem to think these presentations are all about YOU, news flash, they are not. They are about companies showing what they have for everyone. It's not like Sony didn't show plenty of games for the core gamers.

While I won't be buying any Wonderbooks I certainly would have if they had come out when my kids were younger.

I don't care about Battle Royale or Farcry but you don't see me whining about them spending time on them.

morganfell5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

I am also baffled at people whose posts indicated only Sony disappointed them.

Okay, it's an opinion. But some people have only commented on Sony and no other company disappointing them. Either only Sony disappointed because they only own Sony products (as if no one on this site comments on products they do not own), they really do believe everyone else did grand and only Sony failed, or there is the third possibility and we all know what that is.

EDIT: And as has been beat to death yet still ignored, most announcements that come from E3 start on day two as companies begin to reveal plenty that wasn't in the pressers.

NewMonday5104d ago

strange many were very hyped and happy yesterday, where did all the moaners come from?

E3 is not american idol, its simply a showcase for the mass media, Sony could have simply held off reveling GOW:A, Battle Royal, Soul Sacrifice and saved the AC3 Vita reveal for their conference, but few will get enough attention from media and will get lost in the clutter.

but over the last few weeks Sony did enough to make me most excited for what they have to offer

Edit2: Oh you meant the conference. I can see how you could be disapointed by that. Somehow I thought you meant the fact that they said they would never stop playing.

Thatguy-3105105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

i was disappointed to tbh. i mean with all the hype surrounding the cloud service i was truly expecting it. but in reality for the past few yrs sony usually flexes its guns on gamescom. that being said this conference was a let down. the last of us demo pretty muched nailed it. brought chills once joel shot the guy in the face and also when ellie will get into the action. this game is going to be a masterpiece i tell you !!!!

Dojan1235105d ago

Agree. I also wanted a game that pushed me to get the Vita. Not sure what type of game I am looking for but something that I must have with cross play or use the vita as an added screen for the PS3. Maybe a FPS with load out on the touch screen. There is hope since they did show how the Vita can be used as a controler.

kneon5104d ago

I expect if there is going to be a deal between Sony and Gaikai then it will be announced at TGS.

I_LOVE_MYSELF5105d ago

Haha1235105d ago

8. Have the only vita announcements been a logo for CoD and Assasin creed?

Nes_Daze5105d ago

Well I didn't know about Beyond, that was a surprise for me. All of a sudden those impressive exclusive demos were just "good"? I honestly expected more as well, and I would consider it a lackluster show, but at least better than Microsoft's. Ubisoft has been the best so far, can't wait to see Nintendo.

andibandit5104d ago

I agree that it was a tad better than MS, but I was expecting boatloads of kinect stuff from MS,so I was pleasently surprised. I feel the Sony conference was a huge disappointment and the list of things we did not see is too long to comprehend.

Mkai285104d ago

I think Nintendo will take this one

mewhy325104d ago

I think that Ubisoft probably put on the best show of e3 but they were all weak.

Anon19745105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

I think we're glossing over one of the coolest things here. For $60 a year, MS gives you the basic ability to game online, something that should be standard and chat. For $50 a year, Sony gives you a buttload of GAMES on top of an already substantial service! And not just crap either. Games like LBP2, Infamous 2, etc.

If MS suddenly gave a copy of Gears 3 to each and every Gold subscriber, I'm sure the comments section would be full of people losing their minds. Sony announces their commitment to give away top games and to continue to add new ones - on top showing some of the best looking games in existence that we haven't seen gameplay of yet and all people can muster up is "Meh"?

It's like some people won't be happy unless there's an announcement of 19 new AAA IP's that haven't been leaked and a price drop down to $15. What more could you want? You sit back complain about how you want a new firmware update. I'm going to download and play Infamous 2 - the first of many games that would cost me probably $450-$500 in a year if I were to buy them all, but I get for fifty bucks.

Funky Town_TX5105d ago

Last I checked the store that was the case. Xboxlive online integration is miles ahead of PSN, and the cost is subjective. I had PSN for 3 months and the free games are trash.

Christopher5105d ago

What does that have to do with their press event, though?

I love my PS3, I love the games I get to play. But, this is about their press event and how it was predictable and didn't do anything to actually "wow" us.

Furthermore, some of the most important topics for these press events has (and likely always will be) OS updates/improvements and price adjustments. PSN is sorely outdated, sorely, and that Sony hasn't had any update other than security in a very very long time is a huge disappointment and I honestly expected some sort of news at this E3 since there was none at the last E3 (PS+ got some slight improvements, but not the OS itself).

So, no clue what the cost of XBL Gold has to do with the press event I just watched.

And your hyperbole of "some people won't be happy unless there's an announcement of 19 new AAA IPs" it total BS.

My thoughts on the problems of Sony's press event are just as valid as my thoughts on the problems of Microsoft's press event. They're not based on some fanboy need to be sated with more than the sky, but with actual items that everyone has been asking for and/or hoping for.

We were given exactly what we knew we would get as far as game demos, but we weren't give anything else. And a lot of people were hoping for some major updates on PSN and PS Vita.

neutralgamer195105d ago (Edited 5105d ago )

Funkytown must have not watched conference. Lbp2 and infanous2 will be free for ps plus subscribers, not discounted along with 10 other blockbuster games.

And some troll on here had the nerve to say micros shwing was better than Sonys lol you wush not by a ling shock. Last of us alone was better thn anythng micro talked about. Halo was ok but not impressive at all.

MoveTheGlow5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

That PS+ announcement was my favorite part of the conference. It was great enough to make me finally be a PS+ subscriber, but I can see where your mileage may vary. For me, those are all games that I thought were cool, but I wouldn't get at full price. Now, I get to play them all for under the price of one at-launch PS3 game. Even for one month, that would be awesome. Do I own them for eternity? No, and I wouldn't care to, either. Will this be a lot of fun for fifty bucks a year? Uh-huh. Will this be a lot of fun for someone privileged enough to have bought all these games on day one? No, not at all.

Other than that, Last of Us and Beyond looked nice and genre-pushing, if still iterative on the Uncharted and Heavy Rain game templates. They look like they're not so much "new" experiences as they are "Here's what we learned" experiences. Fine by me, but nothing insanely groundbreaking.

They really need to stop with the boring montages. No one cares about those. Also, no one cares about gestures towards "The Gamer" and sloganeering.

Wonderbook may not have looked great for us, but despite the fail-whale demo, it's going to be interesting for moms and kids. New JK Rowling stuff will get someone's attention. I just wish the demo was about 1/5 as long as it was.

I'm just glad I didn't buy a Vita, because oh man, did it look like they did not care at all about that system... and now SoundShapes is coming to the PS3. I officially have no desire to even give the Vita a look (as I'm not a fan of the Assassin's Creed series). Hopefully they'll turn that ship around soon enough.

Subscribed last night, grabbed everything free before this month's update #winning

A solid "B" conference and E3 is not even over yet!

Christopher5105d ago

If you rate only based on what was shown as opposed to what could have/should have (debatable) been shown, I can see this sort of grading.

Personally, I felt that two items needed addressing

- Firmware/OS update for PSN/PS3
- Pricing plans for PS3, PS Vita, PS Vita memory cards

Sony has refused to address either of these.

HunterRose5104d ago

@cgoodno
You will always be disappointed if you 'grade' on what was shown, rather than what could be shown. There is so much speculation before these press conferences that people think of the most awesome things ever to be shown... and a lot will never happen because the speculation is way over the top. Although I'll concede the point if you were considering "The Last Guardian" in that category.

And while I'm not disagreeing with the firmware update for PS3, I wasn't expecting it at this presser... it's not sexy enough. It would have been a better discussion than the wonderbook, though. Even a buddy of mine who is the target audience (with 2 kids) was amazed at how unpolished it looked.

And I think Sony is confident in their sales to not feel the need to address the prices of their hardware right now... they didn't have the massive expectations that Nintendo did for the 3DS, so they're not going to drop the price for a while yet.

Christopher5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

***There is so much speculation before these press conferences that people think of the most awesome things ever to be shown***

I'm not saying to grade on what is hyped, nor did I do that myself. But, there are obviously things that people want. No one hyped any of the two items I mentioned above, but they are sorely desired by many games as shown by the PS Blog Share

http://share.blog.us.playst... '

It's been a very long time since we've seen an update to the UI/firmware. And, the other items are what many analysts say are still needed to increase market share on both fronts.

I would understand over-hyping if I expected Agent, FFvs, or similar to be shown or for them to meet a certain ridiculous quota of things to be shown. But I didn't include that in my assessment of the press event.

kneon5104d ago

@HunterRose

I don't think Sony have much room to move on pricing due to the yen being far too high. The exchange rate is causing problems for all the Japanese exporters. Better to sell 14 million units at a profit than 16 million at a loss.

HunterRose5104d ago

@cgoodno
You're expectations for the presser weren't met... but to rate the conference less because you had expectations for something that they didn't show is unfair. I was disappointed that there was no update on The Last Guardian, but I'm not going to think less of it because of that. Since I'm not attached to a site constantly, a lot of the information was new to me, so I'm gonna base it on what WAS shown, and that was decent.

I agree there should be a firmware update to change the UI, but this isn't the ideal place to announce that. This is a more mass media event, and the firmware is more specific to those of us technologically inclined.

And just because analysts think a price drop should happen doesn't mean Sony does. Just because it comes from professionals doesn't mean it's anything more than hype. And all they're saying is typically what Sony 'could do'... not what they're 'going to do'.

And the Wonderbook portion took about 12 minutes... not 30. Comments like these are why you were getting responses that you're out of touch.

Christopher5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

***You're expectations for the presser weren't met... but to rate the conference less because you had expectations for something that they didn't show is unfair.***

No, it's not. And that's a ridiculous concept.

If they had not showed any games at all, should I rate it based on what they showed only? Forgiven them for not showing any games?

Ridiculous concept. We base it on what is needed, what is announced, and their competitors.

That's exactly what I've done.

***And the Wonderbook portion took about 12 minutes***

It was actually more than 20 minutes.

===

What you're doing is criticizing me for having an opinion that differs. I'm fine if you thought it was okay. But, don't try and make my opinion look like it doesn't matter just because you are okay with what was shown and want to only rate it based on "what was shown".

With that thinking, didn't everyone get an A+?

I would disagree with on some of these points...

What is wrong with PSN exactly???

The book thing u have a point on maybe just a tad bit too long.

Nothing new?? They showed off a couple of new things and a new IP, what more did you want.

price drop??? sooo I assume at this point you do not have a ps3...if that is the case then why are you even commenting on this thread.

what do you mean by integrate psn with Vita??

Please elaborate....

Christopher5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

***What is wrong with PSN exactly???***

It hasn't been updated in forever and it has a ton of things the community has requested that just haven't seen the light of day.

http://share.blog.us.playst...

***Nothing new?? They showed off a couple of new things and a new IP, what more did you want.***

Every single thing shown other than the Wonderbook was announced in one way or fashion prior to their event. The "newest" thing we saw was some of Beyond: Two Souls, but that was expected as it was leaked a weak before the event that it would be there.

***price drop??? sooo I assume at this point you do not have a ps3...if that is the case then why are you even commenting on this thread. ***

I own two, actually. It's my main console. I've been a PS+ member since day one. I got Legendary status during the short lived PS Rewards beta. I own over 150 PS3 games on disc, let alone those downloaded from PSN.

I'm commenting because I care about the future of my console of choice, not about giving Sony high fives for doing the littlest bit possible.

Price cuts are called for on Vita because of its very poor sales and overpriced memory cards. Price cuts are called for on PS3 in order to push it further towards 360 and greatly increase sales potential in its weakest territory, North America.

***what do you mean by integrate psn with Vita??
***

Vita and PS3 really aren't integrated together via PSN. They're getting closer, but it's pretty much on a game-by-game basis rather than as a centralized concept. This is something 360 is doing with their Smart Glass application (making XBL and its features available across many platforms form a central core) and even Nintendo is doing with MiiVerse, making things integrated between 3DS and the WiiU.

Many of the features of PSN should be implemented on the PS3 and vice versa so as to create a cohesive experience whether you're at home or on the go. PS3 definitely needs some form of a revamp on how you communicate with others as well as a ton of improvements on how players access various features and even installing games/updates.

Bleucrunch5103d ago

Ok I totally see where you are coming from on this...Its more of a tough love of Sony because you know they can do better. I can't be mad at that...not at all.

Yes you are correct in your assertion of integration with PS VITA and PS3...I like the idea that the WiiU has and I was thinking that the PSVITA could do the same thing and more since it is such a powerful system. Maybe this is something I could write to sony about to consider doing with that device...

Me and you are going to have to agree to disagree on PSN as I believe it is an awesome service that is provided for free to everyone...Being an I.T. professional myself I know how much server maintenance, and maintaining redundancy onsuch a wide area network as PSN costs and for Sony to have such a consistently stable network running as smoothly as it does for free is a really welcoming feature of PSN. BUT I do agree that their needs to be more cohesion with how PSVITA and the PS3 work together.

As far as system functionality goes...they just need better programmers...using FAT32 or FAT16 (I cannot remember which one it is) was NOT a good idea on their part as their are so many limitations with those filing systems, which could also be the reason why we are not seeing all of the features we are requesting...Also don't forget that the RAM limits the amount of items it can do at one time....In game Xross Media bar still acts funny to this day. I trust and hope that the next console will satisfy many of these issues...I dont know if more can be done system wise on the ps3 now again the system has limitations.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit29d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg29d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10129d ago (Edited 29d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle42d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage43d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
