Wii U Name Not Changing

The was much speculation that Nintendo would change the Wii U's name to something else apparently because it was too close to Wii and consumers who didnt stay in the loop of video games would get confused, however it appears that the name is now virtually confirmed.

Shame

Even the Nintendo U would of been better

Adding the "Wii" part onto it makes it sound like an upgraded Wii, basicaly a HD Wii with a new controler

I think they are only adding the Wii to get the attention of the casual audience again, or at least try to. I think Nintendo know the casual audience might not be as quick to buy the Wii U like they did with the Wii so they are trying to place the core and casual close to their chest and see which one is more resposive to the Wii U this E3 or closer to the release. Once one side takes more of an interest they'll focus their attention on that side more....hopefully the core side will win this time

xtremexx5104d ago

they are probably hoping for people who arent in the gaming loop, to see Wii and buy it.

user54670075104d ago

But the thing is though, knowing what people are like these days, the ones not in the gaming loop will think something like

"Oh a new Wii...well we already have a working Wii no point wasting money on a new one"

Being complelty oblivious to how differen't it actualy is to the Wii.

If they called it something differen't then it would of seemed like a brand new console to the casual audience, not just seem like an upgrade.

"Adding the "Wii" part onto it makes it sound like an upgraded Wii, basicaly a HD Wii with a new controler"

I can say the same thing about the PS2 and PS3, or xbox and xbox 360:

Adding the "PS"/"xbox part onto it makes it sound like an upgraded PS2/Xbox, basicaly a HD PS2/xbox with some functionalities.

DUUUUH! Of course it's an upgraded Wii, just like the PS3 is an upgraded PS2 and the xbox 360 is an upgraded xbox.

Xbox 360 and PS3 has some new social features (like achievements/better online)? Sure! Just like the Wii U is doing.

Your coments makes no sense and it's clear to me that youre just trying to downplay the WiiU, but you have no decent arguments.

@Hisiru

"Your coments makes no sense and it's clear to me that youre just trying to downplay the WiiU, but you have no decent arguments. "

Obviously not when I'm actually explaining my points

Yours don't make sense though

" I can say the same thing about the PS2 and PS3, or xbox and xbox 360"

...How

Sony has always used a number in their consoles, the Xbox has never been around long enough to have a pattern in their names.

Nintendo has though except with the Super Nes but thats when the gaming industry was still pretty young

NES, N64, Gamecube, Wii

"Adding the "PS"/"xbox& quot part onto it makes it sound like an upgraded PS2/Xbox, basicaly a HD PS2/xbox with some functionalities.

DUUUUH! Of course it's an upgraded Wii, just like the PS3 is an upgraded PS2 and the xbox 360 is an upgraded xbox.

Xbox 360 and PS3 has some new social features (like achievements/better online)? Sure! Just like the Wii U is doing."

But the point is Sony and MS wern't going after the casual audience. They wern't bothered if casuals didn't get it because they knew for a fact WE, core gamers, would know that their new consoles were different

if you think about it, keeping the wii u name is the smartest thing to do.

i mean why ditch the tradmark of their most successful console in their history?
and about "the name could turn off the hardcore" i think the hardcore are better than making their decision based only on the name of the console.
they are not the kind of crowd who base their purchase on brands alone, but casuals sometimes do.

if wii u delivered this E3, the hardcore would likely follow regardless of what the console name is.

"if you think about it, keeping the wii u name is the smartest thing to do.

The thing is though as I've said above it could work both ways

The casual audience might not want to pay for another product that looks a little like the Wii and even shares the same name. They won't be able to tell the difference from new console to an "upgrade with a couple of new features"

dark-hollow5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

@mikecosgrove.

but that didnt stop the 3ds from selling like hotcakes now even though the name and the design looks very similar to the ds.

hell look at the new ipad and the iphone 4s, they are the SAME design but people flocked in hordes to buy those. you thought people will get confused, but those and the 3ds did great in sales.

EDIT: "It took the casual audience a while (and a price drop) to realise how differne't the 3DS is"

No it only had a rough start for the price point and sales went strong since the price cut, it had least to do with the name.

"Oh and you can't bring Apple into this, you know for a fact people will buy anything Apple brings out despite how much of the same it is."

and this is exactly why i think keeping the "wii" brand is smart, its hands down nintendos most popular brand between the casuals, establishing a strong, popular brand will make people purchase your products day one regardless.

@dark-hollow

What are you talking about the 3DS got off to a rough start

It took the casual audience a while (and a price drop) to realise how differne't the 3DS is

Oh and you can't bring Apple into this, you know for a fact people will buy anything Apple brings out despite how much of the same it is.

@MikeCosgrove: "The casual audience might not want to pay for another product that looks a little like the Wii and even shares the same name."

seriously, you need to stop posting about this lol. thats a remarkably dumb thing that you just said.

"casuals" know 1 thing - brand recognition. why did the PS2 sell like gangbusters? because of the PS1. people, as a whole, are idiots. they follow trends and buy whats 'cool'. the wii name is now "cool", people like the wii name. people, being idiots, will see a flash new console, see the name "wii" and think - "hey i love the wii! this is a new wii, ill love it too!" - and then they buy it.

much like the majority of PS3 owners/fanboys here on N4PS3G bought a PS3 because they love the Playstation BRAND, the casuals will buy a wii U because they love the wii name.

Kind of obvious considering that's the branding being used in all the game trailers over the last two months.

TopDudeMan5104d ago

Aww. Was kinda hoping they'd call it the "WiiWii".

xtremexx5104d ago (Edited 5104d ago )

XD, i see what you did there.

Give up on the name change already. Worry about the games for it.

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.
