Will the Wii U controller be for hardcore gamers?

InEnt writes: While we would class Nintendo's next Wii as worthy of a next-gen name, the Wii U controller is so different it has us concerned if it could relate with the so-called hardcore gamer. Some people see the controller as “gigantic and off-putting“, and then certain supports cannot understand the fuss if the Wii U controller is comfortable, then what’s the harm?

If they launch the Wii U with standard controllers as well then I don't see a problem.

Titanz5161d ago

It's not like they have a classic controller or anything... Oh wait! (It's called the classic controller pro, which is used for the Wii, and can also be used for the Wii U). They'll make a wireless version, with force feedback.

decrypt5161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

The problem i see is the $$. Every accessory added further increases the price of the package.

People will be reluctant to pay over 300usd. How many things are they going to add into that:

Console it self
Tablet controller
Classic controller

It will just cut into their margins, its not like people will pay extra once the shop keeper tells them, oh it comes with a veriety of controllers.

Plus consider atleast 2 people will want to play at the same time. If they include only 1 controller, the other controller will need to be purchased. Again it just means costs going up.

Lucretia5161d ago

yeah titanz, only prob is that controller still isnt that great, that controller also comes seperate from the console and isn't supported by all games

contra1575160d ago

The classic controller only works for a few games . I couldn't even play metal slug anthology , had to play with the remote go check out most wii games . The classic controller doesn't make it into most of the games .

PopRocks3595160d ago

I'm willing to reckon that Nintendo will be willing to manufacture a new type of "classic" controller for the Wii U. My hope is that it's shaped like the Gamecube controller. The reason for this is way back when there was a rumor that Gamecube games would come to the Virtual Console. So here's hoping.

All that being said, I don't see why any self-respecting core gamer with average intelligence cannot look at the Wii U controller and realize that it's basically just a regular controller with a touch screen in the middle.

All of the previews have said its light in weight and very easy and comfortable to hold; so what exactly is the issue?

BitbyDeath5160d ago

@Titanz, it's an addon controller so it won't see the same support as the tablet. The tablet should be the addon controller IMO.

The only major problem I see is if two cannot be used (rumours suggest otherwise which is a more positive sign)

I can see were Nintendo thinking when the came up with the idea. Casuals are interested in tablet computers so we should do the same. I feel this aspect will back fire as it isn't a tablet at all and is very limited. The core on the other hand do not care as long as the device isn't being used in a gimmicky way (like in a game using it as a scope). I feel the second screen needs to be more menu orientated.

dangert125161d ago

I would like them to use the screen as a scope, what is wrong with that?

iamnsuperman5161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

@danert12 That would make the controller a gimmick. You can't honestly tell me that during an online game/ or even single player game you are going to flip up the controller just to use the scope which adds very little to the experience as it wouldn't feel like using a real scope instead of a far easier option: the button/trigger/bumper.

edit: thinking about it pressing the start button for a menu is as beneficial as looking down at the controller

nirwanda5161d ago

All nintendo need to do is put a camera on the back and make a horror augmented reality game with stuff jumping out around your own house to win over the skeptics.

BISHOP-BRASIL5161d ago

Aren't we over with the hardcore vs casual talk after all of this time? I think what we're looking for is if this controller will aid in quality games or just more gimmicks... Functionality wise, we don't know yet of all the ways devs will use it. It can be just a gimmick? Sure. But it can also be worthy the trouble.

Personally I don't think they need standard controllers IF (and that's a capital if) it's confortable and afordable.

This big tablet like design (which we don't know yet if is the final) don't look confy to me, but I can be wrong, I tested Vita and, despite it's plain shape, it's all right... I don't how long it would be confortable though. But I guess it could be OK if sized right.

The price is maybe the biggest concern. We all like to have another controller for a buddy, it should be even more of a concern for Ninty that usually focus on local multiplayer, party games, etc... And I can't see much of a quality multiplayer, despite of genre, if all players aren't on equal ground.

If I were designing it, the screen is maybe a good idea so, if devs show me it's worthy, I would include it, but definetely I would look for a shape and size we're more used to, or at least reaching a middle term.

danswayuk5160d ago

How hard would it be to just change the controller if you didn't like it, although saying that the price of the Wii U will be higher thanks to a controller with all this tech.

DA_SHREDDER5161d ago

Its an dualshock 3 with a built in touch screen. What's not to love so far?

ChickeyCantor5160d ago

I love how people pretend that gamedesign simply and magically fixes itself just by swapping controller....
Right kids...

humbleopinion5161d ago

But the WiiU has all that: shoulder buttons and triggers, dual analogs, a DPAD and buttons. The touch screen is just an additional perk that might become useful.
And the controller is supposed to come with the system, so I don't see where the problem is. You make no sense at all.

goldwyncq5161d ago

Hating a gimmick is one thing, hating a new thing is different. A lot of things nowadays were considered gimmicks before so you'll never know.

Metroid0075161d ago

Its not a gimmick this site calls everything non sony or microsift gimmicky look the WiiU Pad is sophisticated its got all the biggest tech inside like NFC/WiFi/Panaramic 360 degree viewpoints/cameras/mics/HD screen or almost/ plus its more comfortable to hold then 360 controllers because of it size.

I myself really like the idea of a screen with zero latency unlike Kinect and runnig off such power as a IBM multi core 4 minimum with tons of EDRAM something even pc don't use it's 1000 times better than normal dram and aswell as Watson tech wow.

I think every developer has said to watch out for E3 with WiiU,recently Ninty said they are talking tech spec with WiiU,last time they did this was with N64 and that was way nore powerful than competition.

legend9115160d ago

Exactly, they don't get it. People thought the car was a freaking gimmick and that horse driven carriages will be king for a long time to come. DO YOU OWN A HORSE CARRIAGE?! Good.

jacen1005161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

Problem? so the button configuration that so called "HARDCORE" gamers haven been using the last 6 years is now no good because it has the extra added feature of the second screen? i would see a problem if they left out features but you are getting the same and then some. some people just complain for the sake of it

Uncharted2Vet5161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

honestly ask yourself this. what hardcore gamer thats been used to the standard of a regular controller for years wants to play with a big ass screen in the middle. if i wanted to play something with a screen in the middle i'll go play a handheld. what is it with you crybabies that just can't understand that people prefer not to play with a huge screen in their controller. whats so hard to comprehend huh? oh i get it just cause it's nintendo nobody can say anything about the most-greastest company in the world "NINTENDO" "sarcasm". or how about just like when nintendo introduced motion controls and alot of people did not like using that gimmicky controller they couldn't say anything about that because then we would be called "nintendo-haters" or ya'll would just bring up that classic controller which wasn't even supported by that many games on the wii especially big ones such as Zelda: Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Other M, DOnkey Country Returns, etc. please spare us your crybaby bullcrap you nintendo-nazi

jacen1005161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

why do people keep bring up motion conrtol and the Wii . that was the last nintendo system this is the new one with all the buttons in the right place, dont take it to heart and dont knock it till you tried it, or if u want stick to you dinosaur 6 axis while we splender in the joy of the new WII U control when its released.
by the way you talk a pile of crap and sound like a spoil brat kid

ChickeyCantor5160d ago (Edited 5160d ago )

" what hardcore gamer thats been used to the standard of a regular controller for years wants to play with a big ass screen in the middle"

With that mentality, why did I move from NES to SNES/Sega to PS to N64 to Gamecube/Xbox etc?

Change is good. And I really don't see how this tablet is a problem since Wii-motes really took a left turn. While this just takes a different lane.

Controller looks awesome.

Qrphe5161d ago

More like well over a decade.
Regardless, I think it'll be an awesome controller. It may be weird at first having your hands so far apart but it won't be a problem in the long run. I don't like the idea so much of looking down at my controller for a menu or whatever, hopefully a lot of devs make it optional (doubtful).

Uncharted2Vet5161d ago (Edited 5161d ago )

@jacen100 if i'm a spoiled brat, then you must be an infant, crying about people's preferences for a controller. get over yourself you lame

MacDonagh5161d ago

Since it has yet to be released and all of this is conjecture as of now; I will wait until I see what they have planned for the controller. I'm sure it'll be moderately interesting.

123_3215161d ago

"This thing looks like a piece of crap, i'd never use this junk"
That's what i thought when i first saw it, but now that i've seen some videos and all-angle screenshots and have a mental feel for it (if that makes any sense), i think it can be used for hardcore games.

IRetrouk5161d ago

I think if it's used right then it can only add to experiences, has to be done in a way that's not distracting though

Metroid0075161d ago

Childish m8 the thing is awesome.

123_3215161d ago

Childish?!
I think you've misread my comment. I wasn't bashing it.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

AuraAbjure128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer129d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot129d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno129d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay129d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno127d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK128d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
